His TO rate is 17.9%. That's more Derrick Walton as a sophomore (17.6) than Walton as a senior (13.2). I don't consider those numbers in a bubble--usage matters, assist rate matters--and both of those have gone up recently, but then so have the TOs.

The weird thing is he gets so many more on the road.

Fixed. I was having a hard time logging into ESPN+ and wanted to use what they said to make sense of their oddball rating for Solomon, then forgot to come back to it. Their last eval is old though.

Bostic was a gross oversight. He was in consideration to start at SS. I might have deleted him when I moved Hicks over from FS to start at SS and I then forgot to add him back. He should be on the team.

No he's talking about the play where Brooks wound up on Happ, gave up the basket that matchup made, and then Happ knocked Brooks over in a purposefully accidental looking way and Brooks made it clear he did not believe it was actually accidental.

02/07/2019 - 8:25am That call is made by the…

That call is made by the superintendents based on safety. A 1% chance of losing a kid to freezing or a bus crash isn't worth the risk.

When we were kids they made that decision in the relative dark. In the mid 90s my dad started a conference call with all the metro Detroit supers and his meteorologist (who tells corn growers if their fields will get hit) to make a more informed decision. My brother hosts this call these days, and he is a raging Sparty because he didn't get into Michigan, so all these recent closings are probably because he's mad about losing to Purdue, IU and UI, and not the safety concerns over big ol orange buses full of kids on ice-slicked side roads.

I don't often get to play new video games. I have a very old Dynasty on NCAA 14 and have made a whole bunch of old Michigan teams on there. By now I am surprised nobody has managed to crack open that game and create an online community of modders. Operation Sports keeps rosters coming but EA is progressively less interested every year in maintaining the servers and more times than that you can't download anything because the connection is down.

I believe, based on the information I linked, that Amauri did not have a chance to sign in December but got strung along believing that he only had to get his grades past a certain benchmark to sign in February. That's not 2 months to decide because he did not know that his offer was also contingent on Michigan wanting to play the transfer portal for D-linemen.

02/04/2019 - 1:34pm Because we cover Harbaugh's…

Because we cover Harbaugh's football team for a living, and Michigan fans and MGoBlog readers specifically won't put up with a small potatoes nerd blogger like me if I go full Graham Couch.

I am in no position to affect how other people cover other teams. The best I can do is make my bias toward Michigan plain and present the best information about Michigan I have access to in the most responsible manner possible. In this case the Freep and Rivals got all the information and presented the facts they possess fairly, and I'm totally pig-tailing off of them, providing some bit of historical context and pointing you toward their coverage.

I totally agree that Michigan being surrounded by real journalists ultimately creates a double-standard contra teams whose press rooms are filled with abject homers who feign impartiality and soften coverage for access. I don't want to say "That's no my problem," because that's a coward's answer. I will say I feel mostly powerless to do anything about it. Brian has a larger platform to criticize, and guys like Adam and Ace spend time in press conference rooms that I don't. Criticism from me would be cheap and ineffective, so I reserve it for when it's so bad that a crowd needs to amplify the message.

What I won't do is act like a Graham Couch. That kind of person is the reason shit like Larry Nassar can happen at Michigan State and not at Michigan, and it's certainly nowhere in my job description that I need to act like those hacks in order to compensate for them. That's the sort of thinking that leads people to get their information from propaganda instead of journalists. It's easy to get readers by confirming their biases; it's also irresponsible and destructive and immoral bordering on traitorous to your audience. I'd rather go back to 9-5 trade journalism in a shitty office than become someone like that.

02/04/2019 - 12:27pm The walk-ons recently put on…

The walk-ons recently put on scholarship are only using scholarships for this semester, because they had so many players leave early. Two of them are seniors who probably won't be around in fall, and the third is a PWO they like a lot but probably won't give a scholarship next fall unless he's on the two-deep.

Asking him to grayshirt is about the same thing, IMO (though it's not up there with LSU who told a kid he was grayshirting AFTER he was moved into his dorm). If you cause a guy you're not going to take to end his recruiting process, that's shitty. What's he supposed to do if he reclassifies, take a year abroad?

In this case I don't see any reason to not believe the player, and this is far from the first time Harbaugh's credibility in these matters has been questioned.

https://mgoblog.com/content/pick-damn-phone

I'm also trying to find the piece Ace wrote in 2015 about how Stanford recruits were routinely processed. Suffice to say in these circumstances Harbaugh does not have the possession arrow.

Unless I'm mistaken the record still belongs to Chunkums for a gif made in 2009 that recreated a 16-bit RPG battle with Tate Forcier and Rich Rod. He had just 2 in our old point system where you had to spend a point to upvote somebody and so many people wanted to upvote it that Brian turned off that rule, made the GIF into its own front page post, and linked the comment with a directive for the newly liberated mobs to upvote it. Old points clear after a while so I have no idea what it got up to but it was over 2500 when I wrote about it in dear diary the next week.

I don't know if another comment ever passed that, or even came close, but I doubt it. I do know that the comment led directly to the first-ever posbang thread, since those would have been useless before it.

Note, I had a bad calculation on the tempo. I forgot to remove pre-2016 data, so Michigan was getting judged against a bunch of teams with 35-second shot clocks. I fixed it and uploaded a full-sized version to this article if you want to see it here:

I passed this along to my two cousins who sit in the student section to let them know they need to behave better.

But I will not apologize for being in the 10th row directly opposite Mama Wesson and pointing and laughing at her child when he flopped like a flounder every time he went to the rim and didn't get a call for jabbing his elbows into all the faces. I didn't cuss. I didn't say anything personal. I just laughed at him like a prospective employer who had just been shown an Ohio State degree when Kaleb tried to start a brawl with the 5'11 dude who rejected him. That's fair right?

The Bo nose guards were a pain for me because they were all tiny. I chose Donnie Warner because he was small even compared to them, but nose guards in the '70s for Bo were just small.

if we had a thread for every wah wah political case the school gets dragged into that's all we'd have.

OP also dumped a toilet's worth of snowflake politics. Poster has been around a long time and has solid takes normally so instead of banning he's going back to -1825 points. May earn points back on August 6th if he can pass a quiz on the history of Bolivia.

01/29/2019 - 12:34pm Good eye! AC was wearing a…

Good eye! AC was wearing a special tearaway jersey because he was so often tackled by the shirt. They eventually got some tearaways that matched the team uniforms, and I think the tearaways were banned in 1980 or '81 (the NFL banned them earlier), but for that season at least AC had shirts designed to leave a defender clutching just a shirt if he clutched only the shirt.

01/29/2019 - 11:13am They kept trying to go to a…

They kept trying to go to a 3-4 defense so he could play linebacker, until 2005 when his coaches decided, eh, just put his hand in the ground and he'll whip past those guys before the weight becomes an issue.

This is one of those cases where I think the roster lied about his weight by at least 10 pounds. Woodley was not the same size as Brandon Graham was a senior. But you're correct, if you think of Woodley as 3-4 OLB he wasn't too small--maybe a bit short.

One of my thoughts here was to go with Shantee Orr, who was good enough to think (incorrectly) that the NFL would draft him if he left early. However when you've got a Woodley around...

It is said that those who know don't talk. Somebody affected by the thread asked that it be taken down. Insider stuff from the message board is obviously still appreciated, and we are not in the business of honoring every request from every person in the athletic department. But I didn't see enough in this one to justify saying no.

01/27/2019 - 7:26pm The other two are seniors…

The other two are seniors. They're gone by next fall and this is a way to reward them, so it doesn't make a difference.

Reynolds I'm not so sure. Football is a head count sport and you get 85 per academic year. I believe this replaces a player who left school already and Reynolds isn't counted against 2019-'20 unless he earns a scholarship again in fall. But this is a player who's already seen the field and probably would have been at least a 3-star if he was scouted properly. They really like him. I wouldn't discount the possibility of Reynolds being a scholarship player next year regardless.

Via a guy with ties to the program who was right about some things last year, Reynolds is for real. PWO Don Brown find who played at Don Bosco and had a Northwestern offer. Used to be a receiver but switched to defense right when evaluators might have caught him, but a top athlete. Only DB to ever give Tarik Black a game in HS.

01/25/2019 - 9:04am It's a fair question…

It's a fair question. Michigan was three over by my count. I know at least one guy here is gone after spring and probably two or three more from among older players who've already been passed by younger guys. I couldn't begin to guess who else might leave (and I'd prefer we not guess out loud on any of them please) but chances Michigan goes the next 7 months without losing 4 or more from this roster is slim to nil.
