"The 49ers wanted to extend Kaepernick" is a lot of revisionist history. We know this because... the 49ers GM said they were going to cut him:

John Lynch said so on Wednesday, in a PFT Live interview to be aired later this week.

“Yes,” Lynch said regarding whether Kaepernick would have been cut if he hadn’t opted out, “and we had that conversation with him. So I don’t want to characterize it as he made a decision to leave here. We both sat down and under that current construct of his deal, it was a big number. [Coach] Kyle [Shanahan] had a vision for what he wanted to do, and one thing I think Kyle was very clear and I think Colin appreciated, is that Kyle has an idea of how he’d play with Colin Kaepernick. But he preferred to run the exact offense that he ran in Atlanta last year that was record-breaking in this league. And if you change it for the quarterback, you change it for everybody on that offense.  So he had a great discussion that I think gave Colin clarity, so we moved on. Brian Hoyer was one of the guys we pursued. Once we pursued him, we didn’t see Kaep as a backup that would really fit in that scheme and we communicated that to him. So I think we’ve been very up front with it. But I think that is a fair characterization.  Yes, he was not going to be here under the construct of his contract.  We gave him the option, ‘You can opt out, we can release you, whatever.’ And he chose to opt out, but that was just a formality.”

But you know, never let facts get in the way of a good opinion.

I'm not sure if you're being intentionally daft or not, but it appears you don't understand the market for NFL QBs that well. First off, your "he opted out" is mostly irrelevant. 49ers GM John Lynch confirmed in an interview they were going to cut Kaepernick. This is widely documented (Link) This is what Lynch said:

“Yes,” Lynch said regarding whether Kaepernick would have been cut if he hadn’t opted out, “and we had that conversation with him. So I don’t want to characterize it as he made a decision to leave here. We both sat down and under that current construct of his deal, it was a big number. Again, source.

Also, Kaepernick opting out likely was good sense given the QB Market:

  • Mike Glennon (Career QB Rating of 84), signed a 3 year, $45 million deal during 2017 free agency. Pro-football-reference gives Glennon's career AV as 13.
  • Jay Cutler, who was much older than Kaepernick, and coming off a season in which he played only 5 games, with a Career QB Rating of 85.7, signed a 1 year $10 million deal during 2017 free agency. His career AV is higher (109), but was coming off 2 seasons of AVs of 2 and 5, with QB Ratings of 78 and ~81. Link
  • In 2018, Kirk Cousins, QB Rating 93.6, and career AV of 31 (at the time) signed a 3 year, $84 million deal.
  • In 2018, Case Keenum, (current*) QB Rating 84.5 and career AV of 10 (at the time signed a 2 year, $36 million deal.

Kaepernick, has a QB Rating of 88, a career AV of 49, and was coming off seasons of 4 and 9, and ratings of 78.9 and 90.7 Link. At the time of the close of the 2016 season, he was #15 overall in QB Rating. Link.  He currently sits at #18 all time (Link). Ahead of Dalton, Stafford, Alex Smith, Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, Case Keenum, Eli Manning, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Blake Bortles, etc. There's also a host of retired players on there that he's ahead of (Daunte Culpepper, Steve McNair, Brett Favre, etc.).

Look, you can agree or disagree with Kaepernick on the whole protest issue. I don't really care to debate that with you (I'm not going to change your mind if I was opposite of you... which I'm not even getting into if that's my view or not). But that's beside the point. There is a lack of QB talent in the NFL, and it overpays for a QB. Using something objective such as QB Rating Kaepernick was at least decently qualified as an average NFL QB.

Here's the list of QBs making more than he would have made going into the 2017 season if he had not opted out: Link. There are at least 13 based purely on cap dollars (which can be a bit understated when talking overall contract value that you used).

This is not that crazy. The NFL pays QBs a lot.

*Keenum was not on the through 2016 QB Rating list.

It may leak someday, but my guess is it takes a while.

As with most settlements, it's arrived at after both sides consider their strengths and weaknesses and the downside of pursuing further. No way to know the exact amount, but just based on the numbers involved with his potential damages (average NFL QB salary of $20m a year) he likely was in the $40m (+) range.

That's normally something you share with a low level coach you hired to make a top tier recruit happy. Probably chatted about it over some Chardonnay.

Crowell has nothing to do with Dobbs not coming here. Dobbs was not coming here - it was not a good fit, and that's why he says basically exactly that when asked. This was realized and Michigan moved on once it was apparent. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

Dobbs was never coming and both knew it for a while.

Other than that this isn't anything too much out of the ordinary for this article. Michigan recruits more nationally and so isn't in on the in-state guys as much early, which means they are sometimes playing from behind later on.

They have some ground to make up after years of mediocrity as well and MSU's success during that period. It is what it is, the sky isn't falling.

See my post a few above - you could get *some* functionality with QOS set ups on some company's routers by limiting bandwidth - can't guarantee it would solve it (and could decrease streaming quality), but it might.

Specifically, you could try QOS on an ASUS router that appears to allow that functionality and see if that helps. If you're able to log in to manage your router then setting up QOS is not that hard - its mostly drop down menus.

I am in total agreement with you. I meant revisionist history in general, not your post. I worded in poorly because when I was saying “around here” on him being considered the best (I agree): I was trying to express that we all think that now, but did not a few years ago. I think you, me, and a Frank were all saying the same thing: patience with Harbaugh and who else could we get that is better? Sweeney, in my opinion, is the perfect argument for this.

01/31/2019 - 6:58pm DD-WRT is a software that…

DD-WRT is a software that runs on routers. Just like routers have the commercial software installed you can “flash” them and install this software instead. DD-WRT allows more controls than most factory-installed router software. But it does require some know-how.

I’m not aware of any commercial routers that allow you to cap data, so that’s not really an option unless you can find one.

Howver, Asus routers do have QOS (quality of service) settings that would allow you to cap bandwidth by devices, so if you’re comfortable enough to be able to ID a device by MAC address you could limit up/down bandwidth settings for particular devices. (Link: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1013333/), but note that it’s obviously not going to cap total data, just how quickly that data comes in to that device. It’s imperfect because of this, but potentially could help.

i believe TP-Link has similar QOS, not sure about others.

01/31/2019 - 10:20am Don't throw things is a…

Don't throw things is a pretty easy rule. I definitely do not support throwing anything at anyone at a sporting event. But there's also tons of shenanigans that happens in the student section (e.g., throwing them everywhere at each other that I'm generally okay with) and they occasionally fly outside. It happens, and I don't think it is at the level of throwing batteries at people.

As for the "cussing" - I dislike the "bitch" that has been added to the end of "You Suck!" and will not say it. But saying "you suck" is pretty innocuous at this point and frankly a lot better than a lot of other stuff that gets said. Now, I won't be saying "you suck" when we're down a ton and punting in the 4th because.... yeah.

My 3 year old son has a foam sword we play fight with sometimes. You could smack me in the face with that thing and it wouldn't hurt. I know because this accidentally happens a lot with a 3 year old. If she's complaining about that maybe she should have taught her son, whose basketball talent appears to consist of being a shitty OT playing Center, to get tougher.

OSU fan complaining about cussing is vintage "shocked that there's gambling going on in here." Have some perspective, Ms. Wesson. YOUR SON PLAYS FOR OHIO STATE.

As for the spit. I presume it was buckeye tears after Kaleb got poster-blocked by Jordan Poole.

While I have a ton of respect for DD-WRT, flashing a router to it is not for everybody and there are other effective ways you can do it as well through routers out of the box. For the less-tech savy that may be a more viable alternative if they are willing to spend money.

01/31/2019 - 9:12am Wow, that seems like a lot…

Wow, that seems like a lot of data being used. I just switched from DirecTV (satellite) to Playstation Vue and our data usage went up, but we're at about 800 GB for January and that's with all TV being streamed, gaming, etc. Mostly we only have two devices going at any one time so perhaps that impacts it.
