12/31/2018 - 2:45pm I don’t know about this dude…

I don’t know about this dude anymore. I say warm his seat up.

The lack of urgency when down in the 4th is #1 reason why for me. The O just turtles against good competition/coaching. Huddling and running up the gut can’t be plan A, B and C anymore. It’s not 1982.

If he is really gonna double down on that O-system, so be it, but he needs to sense some urgency in more ways than one.

12/29/2018 - 9:25pm On the bright side, no way…

On the bright side, no way he marches back in with Pep next year. Surely a highly-paid, proven OC is in UM’s future.

12/09/2018 - 6:47am Meh. If there’s one thing I…

Meh. If there’s one thing I don’t do, it’s sweat the final choices of these kids much. You don’t get to be ‘Bama until great talent starts to come to you. And if you ain’t got the guts to help stem the, well, tide... and go to an awesome school like UM... one very much on the brink of being elite... well, screw it. On to the next kid.

Sure, Harbaugh took a nasty black eye. It happens. Although if someone truly has your back, they double down and step into the fight for you.

12/03/2018 - 6:57am How is Michigan not playing…

How is Michigan not playing on New Year’s Day? And Florida? Again? Something is broken. And not just UM’s D vs. the mesh.

Couldn’t care less about this.

11/30/2018 - 7:22pm Someone please foreward this…

Someone please forward this diary to Mr. Harbaugh, k thanx.

11/30/2018 - 7:12pm Other teams got killed, sure…

Other teams got killed, sure, but his two finalists went head-to-head and one got violently pantsed in front of the whole country. If he winds up at UM, it would be pretty amazing at this point.

11/26/2018 - 10:41am I did not expect OSU to drop…

I did not expect OSU to drop a historic 62 on UM. That was just plain awful to behold.

11/26/2018 - 10:37am Damn. Hard to argue with…

Damn. Hard to argue with this. Anyone?

11/26/2018 - 1:24am UM got absolutely smoked by…

UM got absolutely smoked by a superior football team. No mindset was gonna change a thing. The fanbase seems to be trying to rationalize a historic beatdown. A bunch of “if only” nonsense. Sometimes you just suck.

The Wolverines never had a real chance in that contest, wasn’t that abundantly clear? Zone D or man or whatever, OSU played to their potential and their potential is considerably higher than what UM can currently aspire to. It’s an entire sideline of future NFL players.

If the talent gap continues, the 1/15 odds will too, it’s that simple. Urban is too damn smart to let the gameplan slip. You gotta BEAT them. Starting on the recruiting trail.

Just move on, do one’s best to address the glaring weaknesses and roll the dice again at home next year. Go Blue.

11/25/2018 - 3:13pm The passing game feels…

The passing game feels underutilized. It seems this Harbaugh guy is a MANBALL man. Also, the sky is blue.

Regardless, the continued runs yesterday on 2nd and long were mind-boggling and, generally, pass plays take too damn long to develop. Seems they need some screens, shorter routes, quick-hitters. This complaint has popped-up all year, for good reason. The passing attacks of UM’s heyday appeared to be far more consistent. The talent is there, somehow, but I have no idea how they keep selling this wonky system to elite recruits.

That said, the painfully glaring reason Michigan lost yesterday is because the D gave up the most regulation-time points in the history of the UM program. A historic beatdown. The vaunted pressure never left Ann Arbor. And everyone else looked like a MAC-level player.

The blame falls squarely on the D’s total inability to hang with or adjust to OSU’s attack.

That all said, I love this Charbonnet kid’s reel and feel he could be a difference-maker. Maybe not on 2nd and long though...

11/25/2018 - 11:54am Yeah, it seems it was a…

Yeah, it seems it was a combo of stubborness, overconfidence and a total misread on how the man-to-man D would peform vs. that speed/O-line.

if OSU plays to their potential every game, UM is gonna be up against it, but with a better D approach that game yesterday was an avoidable train wreck.

Time to wise up. Fast. I don’t mind Jim feeling some heat. At all.

11/24/2018 - 5:36pm I know Brian may not do a…

I know Brian may not do a UFR for this game, but I would sure love an in-depth analysis of UM's defensive approach, because it was mystifyingly ineffective.

11/24/2018 - 5:09pm They absolutely own us.

They absolutely own us.

No UM fan should be okay with that. Or rationalizing that. Or looking on the bright side of that.

Losing to OSU is and will always be #1 on the "WHY I GOT FIRED AT MICHIGAN" list. For all eternity.

Should we turn up the heat on Harbaugh's seat? Be my guest. Beat OHIO.

11/24/2018 - 4:53pm Bitterly disappointed to see…

Bitterly disappointed to see that UM's coaches couldn't dial-up ANY pressure on that statue of a QB. Chase was a total no-show.

The D performance is just the biggest team "WTF" I've seen in 45 years of watching sports. Hats off to Urban and Wilson for eating Michigan's lunch, spitting it out, and then rubbing Harbaugh and Brown's face in it. Shameful performance.

11/24/2018 - 4:37pm Worst. Loss. Ever. Far worse…

Worst. Loss. Ever. Far worse than The Horror.

11/24/2018 - 2:22pm This whole game came down to…

This whole game came down to getting pressure on Haskins. He's had all day so far.

Sucks, because OSU's D is obviously vulnerable. UM has had some questionable play-calling once again though, way too many 2nd and long run calls. Yuck.

UM is a 2nd half team. Make plays!!!

11/20/2018 - 1:07pm Tough to get much more…

Tough to get much more excited for an RB. Great acceleration at that size. Plus jukes. Love the attitude that he runs with. Eats up contact, when they can hit him. Got some All Day in him.

I think he's underrated in the class, especially considering the elite competition he's punishing out there.

11/07/2018 - 10:01pm Be careful with edibles. And…

Be careful with edibles. And legal weed in general. It can be verrry powerful and potent. I’ve had some good fun with some “legal” California edibles that were well labeled (Plus brand gummies and Korova cookies), so I knew exactly how much I was ingesting. For the first few months of legalization out there, nobody was required to label the THC-levels (shockingly) so people were flipping out left and right and winding up at the ER in a panic. They are required to label the dosage now, and hopefully Michigan does the same.

It takes about two hours for edibles to hit full-on, but when it does you will most definitely know.

About 15mgs of THC gives me a mellow, happy high (and amazing sleep), but like a lot of people, it can get too weird, and rather unpleasant, quick. Take it easy, learn your limits. I love the stuff, but like anything in excess, it can suck. I don’t know much about CBD, but I’m eager to try it.

Personally thrilled at the newfound freedom. I like freedom.

10/20/2018 - 3:17am You know none of this…

You know none of this analysis matters. MSU will play with their hair on a raging fire, and they will play dirty. Their “script” probably includes trying to injure Shea or Higdon.

I do not anticipate a W. I do envision Lewerke having numerous long scrambles to convert 3rd downs. And a drive killing UM penalty or three. I envision myself yelling at a TV in vain.

They are unbearable scumbags and they bring out their worst vs. UM. Hopefully UM brings some fire of their own. I’m afraid you have to get down in the muck some to beat them at their place. Especially since they’ll be all extra jacked-up a-holes after Happy Valley.

10/14/2018 - 8:20am In the words of Han Solo,…

In the words of Han Solo, don’t get cocky. Beat Sparty. The rape enablers. And the rest of ‘em.

10/14/2018 - 12:03am Yeah, it was nowhere near in…

Yeah, it was nowhere near in the bag until the 4th. Granted Wisky never gets blown out like that (Chryst just threw in the towel). The elation is appropriate.

One of the more weirdly awesome wins I can remember. And I’ve been watching them since the 70s.

Beat MSU.

09/05/2018 - 4:55pm Harbaugh needs a contract…

Harbaugh needs a contract extension to keep recruiting well (he only has three years left after this one, which will surely start to make recruits/families nervous). No one wants to play for a dead man walking. Certainly not the type of elite recruits that will compete with OSU.

If UM tanks this year, they won't fire him but they'll likely offer him a few more years extension (to keep recruiting on life support, and possibly buy time to find another coach). It will be embarrassing if that's what it comes to though... a small extension, with a small buyout... which is more or less a last chance dice roll at the big success most expected to see by now.

OR, if things go south this year, he may just leave for the NFL. Whatever happens, something has to happen contract-wise at the end of this year. Because the program can't let recruiting go completely into the toilet.

I think everyone's preference is to win big and get the big, sexy extension. Place your bets.

09/04/2018 - 4:39am I love analysis from former…

I love analysis from former football players. Thank you. One thought, on the final fumble, Runyan left his man to pick up a stunt and then the guy he left caused the fumble, is that what Runyan’s coached to do? Or is that a bad play on him? Did he just execute poorly? Bad luck?

My other thing is, Harbaugh blew a lot of smoke up people’s butts in his press conference. I know “coachspeak” and all, but he sure sounded pleased with most every position, even the O-line (the press were also playing early season softball). I didn’t play organized football but I know when the boss blows smoke up everyone’s butt, there isn’t much motivation to be better. This goes for his coaches too.

After ten rock solid years of relative sucking (more if you count being owned by the Buckeyes), one would hope for a discernible level of displeasure after, yet another, loss.

Final note, I’ve seen very few people call out the invisible running game in the last four contests (L, L, L, L). It’s another position Jim praised in his presser. Although, of course, his young son is the coach there...

09/03/2018 - 7:38pm Brian just compared Harbaugh…

Brian just compared Harbaugh to Hoke. And it was a legit comparison. FML.

09/02/2018 - 9:59am They look like they could…

They look like they could hang with most everyone, but OSU. Although the fact that Haskins is a big, immobile target gives me a shred of hope (of course, OSU would just put Martell out there in response).

But if Harbaugh can’t make even a tiny dent in this 1-6 shit this year, flip the hotseat to broil.

And after the bonehead stuff from last night, that fluke loss to MSU is looking like less of a fluke every game, and more symbolic of a poorly coached program.

09/02/2018 - 9:39am The careless clock…

The careless clock management was telling. He lacks a sense of urgency. Playing not to lose. Never gonna close in the big games with that.

09/02/2018 - 7:59am My goodness. The O is so…

My goodness. The O is so busted. Someone mentioned we have 290 rushing yards... in the last four games combined. I thought these were supposedly good run blockers?

09/02/2018 - 12:33am Let’s not overthink this…

Let’s not overthink this. The O-line is just not good (I cannot believe Runyan is the left tackle at this point in the Harbaugh era... where on Earth are the mighty Stanford-types we all expected?!). And that D was very good. On the road. At night. First game.

Patterson did his best. He’s very accurate and has a quick release, a lot to like, but the coaches reallllly do need to roll him away from that line and just get more creative (this is NOT an NFL line!). There will be no pockets against good teams. None. These coaches are kidding themselves if they think Patterson will survive much longer behind this sieve.

The D will come around. Too many dumb penalties. But, man, those Ulizio 2.0 fears are firing up fast...

Does DPJ running back the kickoff for a TD count?

08/30/2018 - 7:59am I'll say one more thing, the…

I'll say one more thing, the bigger test for me, personally, was my relationship with my wife. Kids absolutely change that dynamic. Take care of it, don't let your relationship take too much of a backseat, make time to be together. After I had kids, I realized THAT explains all the ritual pomp and circumstance of marriage and weddings and vows... raising children takes some hardcore commitment to each other.

08/30/2018 - 7:50am Yeah, adding a second one is…

Yeah, adding a second one is a whole other level. But double the fun! Most of the time.

08/30/2018 - 7:47am Enjoy it. Every damn dirty,…

Enjoy it. Every damn dirty, stinky, messy, loud, 3:47 am, WTF?, srsly?, not again!, OMFG, honey where's the ___?! second.

The old saying that "they grow up so fast" is easily the truest of life's truths that I've ever experienced. Sure, it'll test you (actually, that does not end, that's just parenting), but I look at my kids' baby photos with nothing but blissful pride and adoration. When it comes to being a father, the good absolutely destroys anything that could be called bad.

Hell, my son had a potentially deadly bone infection on his 1st birthday (he was in the hospital for days) and I look back on THAT as an experience I'd never trade for the world. Just live it before it's gone.

08/26/2018 - 10:15pm If anyone hasn’t seen his…

If anyone hasn’t seen his senior year tape...

If he had five stars you’d be like, uh, yeah, five seems right.

08/23/2018 - 4:46pm True. Maybe it was the…

True. Maybe it was the inconsistent and endlessly rotating quarterback nonsense. Just never much of a threat. Scott Mitchell had like one good year.

08/23/2018 - 2:55pm Imagine if Lions had even…

Imagine if the Lions had even the slightest hint of a quarterback or O-line during Barry's stint. Like if he played for, say, Dallas.

Crap organization.

One of the most enthralling pieces of entertainment in the history of mankind.

06/24/2018 - 5:41pm Sanders will be an overnight…

Sanders will be an overnight sensation. Sucks, but he is a huge talent and has the QB in place to help keep the D on their heels. He will step in and blow-up. Potentially lead the league.

Hopefully the same can be said for Shea’s effect on UM’s attack tho.

06/24/2018 - 5:35pm I tell myself that Harbaugh…

I tell myself that Harbaugh has an experienced 5-star coming in at QB... and if UM can’t have a good season this year, well, bitch all you want. You won’t be alone.

But problem #1 has been fielding a legit, elite threat at QB. And that issue is (should be) out of the way for a spell. Now throw in the new OL coach, and if the stars don’t start to align this year... all aboard the hate wagon.

But UM will never consistently recruit on the level with OSU and ‘Bama. Not with the difference in admission standards + local talent pools. No way. But it can, and should be getting better soon. Shea does not resemble a bust. At all.

06/21/2018 - 11:57pm Some of my favorite go-to…

Some of my favorite go-to beers here. Ballast Point Sculpin. Surly Todd the Axe Man. Two-Hearted.

But Zombie Dust. Hoo boy, the liquor store in my town limits it to one six-pack per customer. And it's never available. I know it's a popular "top beer" choice... but there's a reason for it. That stuff is just absurd.

05/20/2018 - 10:23pm The force is strong with this one.

Subject to change...

1. Star Wars - A New Hope, pre-Special Edition

2. Jaws

3. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Too easy? I've sat through these films a hundred times and still get a thrill from them. They are life-changers. World-changers. Note: Like all Star Wars films, a New Hope has some seriously hokey dialogue, but it also has a large number of classic lines and simply the most riveting final act of any film ever made.

Private Ryan is probably the greatest war film I've seen. Apocalypse Now is awfully close though. Also love Platoon. And many others.

Definitely in top ten...

Singin' In the Rain

Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Taxi Driver

There Will Be Blood

Fellowship of the Ring

03/06/2018 - 10:00pm Yep

For years I’ve used “Lebowski rug” to refer to anything that visually/conceptually ties things together. I use it at my advertising gig all the time. It’s very handy.

Also, does anyone know there was an entire store in NYC dedicated to memorabilia from this movie? Just south of Washington Square. It’s closed now. But I have a few cherished t-shirts from it. How many movies start their own damn store?

02/26/2018 - 7:14pm Oh they’re good at their jobs.

Which is to keep billions flowing into their pockets off the backs of poor athletes.

02/02/2018 - 12:34am "Irreversible"

Not recommended for the faint of heart.

(spoiler alert)

Monica Bellucci being brutally, I mean BRUTALLY, viciously, relentlessly raped and beaten into a coma in one insanely long, extended-shot. And that's just one of the scenes. I won't watch it again. But YOU should.

Also "Dead Alive" from Peter Jackson's splatter years (pre-Lord of the Rings) will test your capacity for gore. Although it's all in good fun. I mean, it's GORY, goopy, bloody fun non-stop for about an hour.

I keep reading that Cannibal Holocaust is disturbing. And if you truly want to be deeply disturbed about humanity, watch "Night Will Fall". The recently-found documentary about the real Holocaust (on Netflix). Filmed by the soldiers of the liberating armies. Just mountains of dead, decaying bodies.

I mean, I couldn't finish it. It will make you want to march out and attack an alt-right supporter for even thinking about throwing up a Nazi salute.

02/02/2018 - 12:26am Loved the book

I was truly moved by it. And I think it had the greatest final paragraph to a book I've ever read.

It's a quick read, a must read.

The movie was unbearably depressing. Good. But I couldn't finish it.

02/01/2018 - 9:59am The only ones saying “stars don’t matter”

Are butthurt fanbases that don’t get enough of them. Recruiting the best kids matters in any and every sport.

How the sports marketing world has tried to reduce it to a pseudo-science is definitely silly at times. But you need the best Jimmies and Joes you can get. And the analysis and predictions of exactly who those fellas might be are stronger than ever.

‘Bama isn’t ‘Bama due to dumb luck or better Xs and Os. And OSU isn’t kicking UM’s butt because it’s just a cyclical rivalry. They are winning on the trail.

This all seems like “duh” to me.

01/31/2018 - 6:40pm Keep pumping

The well.

Or something.

01/26/2018 - 6:59pm I understand people wanting to spin this class positively

But this is not the level of recruiting that levels things with OSU. Just ain’t. You can’t rely on diamonds in the rough panning out when the other guy is bringing in crown jewel after crown jewel.

Harbaugh is getting paid too much for this to continue. Hopefully his staff tweaking helps and 2019 shines.

Neg away if you must. I know the truth hurts. So does getting smoked by the Buckeyes like clockwork. Go Blue.

01/20/2018 - 2:33pm Uh, right? Compare that to Drevno's OC record.

Actually, don't. There is no comparison.

I mean, surely Harbaugh isn't gonna make this guy just an analyst. If that IS the plan, I know I'm not alone in thinking that adding more line cooks to an already crowded kitchen sounds wonky at best.

Harbaugh will either truly shake-up the top of the O staff or another bad season will surely force his hand.

We'll see. I personally think Shea is gonna be an overnight sensation. Just how sensational hangs in the balance of these decisions though, it seems.

01/19/2018 - 10:26am Hmm

That's an interesting hypothesis, but I'd be shocked and saddened if it held up in research.

I think there are a number of factors at play, many having to do with the iconic nature of the characters in the PSU story, the fallen idol, the lurid details and settings, just the sheer irony of it all happening in a idyllic place called "Happy" Valley. It was set-up to have media appeal.

And now this new story comes out, and maybe the newscycle just doesn't want ANOTHER trip down this familiar lane. Maybe world-class gymnasts just aren't as relatable to people as helpless little kids off the streets. Sad, yes, but maybe true as well.

I just hope the perpetrators get what's coming to them.

Also, IT was fucking amazingly awesome. Just got the blu-ray. Can't wait for the next one.
