Why does Wisconsin get to vote on a baseball issue when they don't even field a team?

02/19/2019 - 3:19pm I feel like they have been…

I feel like they have been doing exactly that. Unfortunately, it can be tough for regular transfers to get through admissions too. Seems like it's been close to 50-50 for players they've chosen to pursue and surely there were some they knew it wasn't worth trying to get in.

I don't really care if they were former big time recruits if they're grad transfers.

02/19/2019 - 11:34am Yeah, the polls have never…

Yeah, the polls have never counted. The committee is using the NET rankings instead of RPI, but they only used RPI as a secondary ranking. It remains to be seen how closely the seedings will match the new NET numbers.

02/19/2019 - 11:31am Yeah, moving MSU down only…

Yeah, moving MSU down only because of an injury is not what voters should be doing. Move them down after they start losing with an injury to a key player, not before.

02/18/2019 - 11:53pm You don't have to care. He's…

You don't have to care. He's a local kid, the son of a long time former coach and is now likely to be a starting QB in our division. That's more than enough for me to find this news interesting.

02/18/2019 - 2:44pm Move back and stockpile…

Move back and stockpile picks is the fan's mantra.

02/17/2019 - 6:11pm Pitino is by no means the…

Pitino is by no means the only cheater, but he got caught cheating while on probation for cheating. He forced his own exile.

02/16/2019 - 7:43pm I read a couple of…

I read a couple of interviews Simmons gave. He's a very impressive young man with a terrific attitude.

02/14/2019 - 10:54am Khaleke Hudson's offer list…

Khaleke Hudson's offer list was nothing special outside of Michigan. The next biggest offer was in-state school Penn State and they refused when he tried to commit.

02/11/2019 - 2:04pm The 20 somethings become GAs…

The 20 somethings become GAs and get to work directly with the players. Analysts are mostly experienced coaches between jobs that can give some advice to the coaches. It's not a job where you make a name for yourself and move up the coaching ladder.

02/11/2019 - 2:00pm The analysts get paid far…

The analysts get paid far less than the coaches, around $100K. Harbaugh likes to bring in guys with experience elsewhere who might be able to add a different perspective.

02/10/2019 - 6:49pm How soon we forget. When…

How soon we forget. When Simpson was struggling last season he started Brooks in his place. He started Livers over Robinson most of the season. Duncan stepped up his play significantly to earn back more minutes.

Beilein has been consistent about playing to win. He doesn't play freshmen just to get them experience or because he made promises to them in their recruitment. (Because he doesn't promise playing time.) He plays them when he thinks they will help the team win more games.

02/10/2019 - 11:24am So who are Michigan's…

So who are Michigan's designated starters for 2020?

02/10/2019 - 11:14am I don't think Beilein's…

I don't think Beilein's philosophy about earning playing time is the reason he rarely gets 5* recruits.

I tend to be pessimistic about landing recruits when Michigan is one of many schools competing for them too. However else you want to look at it, the odds aren't favorable.

02/08/2019 - 9:39pm Also bad is calling Denard …

Also bad is calling Denard "Shoelaces". His nickname is Shoelace.

02/08/2019 - 10:14am Not his OC, Michael Johnson…

Not his OC, Michael Johnson Sr was his WR coach at Oregon and stayed there when Taggert took the FSU job.

02/08/2019 - 10:08am Their 4* red shirt freshman…

Their 4* red shirt freshman Hockman transferred after fall camp last season too.

02/07/2019 - 10:17pm Can we have a Brady statue…

Can we have a Brady statue and not one for Woodson? Or for Harmon, Desmond and a few more former players?

Maybe a Brady statue helps a little in recruiting, but surely a Heisman winner that led Michigan to a national title deserves one in Ann Arbor more.

02/07/2019 - 10:07pm He's doing that for the…

He's doing that for the benefit of the next crop of recruits they'll pay.

02/07/2019 - 10:04pm One way to decide where the…

One way to decide where the offense starts is to have each coach submit a written bid. No coin toss unless they make the same bid. Whoever offered to start further back gets the ball.

02/07/2019 - 9:55pm Making overtimes very short…

Making overtimes very short also makes them more random. I'm not in favor of that. I also don't like the artificial nature of that system. It's the football equivalent of a shootout in hockey or soccer.

Maybe the NFL should look into changing their overtime system, but I like what CFB does. I'd suggest one tweak, force the team that starts on defense to go for two from the first OT. If the team that starts on offense scores a TD, they can ensure it's the final OT by kicking a PAT. Or they can go for two, something that would be poor strategy now. It would potentially shorten games, add strategy and lessen the advantage of winning the coin flip. I'm not seeing any downsides.

02/07/2019 - 5:45pm My take is that this is…

My take is that this is simply Beilein doing his due diligence.

He's been recruiting Quinones for some time, this isn't a prospect just popping up on Michigan's radar. Quinones said he's going to decide in late Spring. Wouldn't it be malpractice not to keep on him just in case?

02/07/2019 - 5:37pm Everyone has assumed that…

Everyone has assumed that Matthews is gone but Beilein said a couple of days ago that he will have a decision to make after the season. It was an unprompted statement and I'm not sure why he said it if he was really sure Matthews wouldn't return.

02/07/2019 - 1:39pm If you love coaching these…

If you love coaching these have to be very easy gigs. No recruiting, no real pressure, short seasons, not much to do in the off season. Retirement isn't for everybody. Compared to their previous jobs this is pretty close.

02/07/2019 - 11:52am Flopping is bad enough, but…

Flopping is bad enough, but the worst form of it is when a player goes down like he's been hit in the head by an elbow trying to draw a flagrant foul. I've seen a few official replays where they show the player wasn't even touched. How they don't make that at least a technical is beyond me.

02/07/2019 - 9:13am As a practical matter, the…

As a practical matter, the decision whether to close schools has to be taken before it's known how bad the roads will be. If the forecast is for icy roads, then you're going to see school districts playing it safe.

The decision to stay open puts a lot of employees on the roads earlier than when students leave home and when the roads are often worse. Staying open also carries the potential of being a major mistake that could directly lead to tragedy. Schools have snow days built into their schedule for a reason.

You should be glad when navigating the roads is easier than forecast instead of bitching about it. Maybe try not to just think about things from your own perspective. /end rant

02/06/2019 - 9:10pm Division 2 schools are only…

Division 2 schools are only allotted 36 football scholarships, so most players get partial ones. Baseball and some other varsity sports work the same way in Division 1.

02/06/2019 - 8:22pm Rutgers didn't notice that…

Rutgers didn't notice that either. When they were fouling late, they let time run off when the ball was in Matthews' hands, waiting for a chance to put X on the line.

02/06/2019 - 7:55pm In other recruiting news not…

In other recruiting news not worthy of its own thread, Dawand Jones signed with Ohio State. He's a massive OL from Indianapolis that was seen here as a possible backup plan to Trevor Keegan. He's a 3* outside of the top 1000, but picked up some good offers. How commitable they were is anyone's guess.

Danielson Ike of Kansas City, the other OL Michigan was looking at before the early signing period, signed with SMU . He also had some high profile offers and until today was expected to pick Oklahoma. Quite the surprise.

02/06/2019 - 7:33pm I was wondering if that's…

I was wondering if that's part of the reason Belichick hired Schiano. His disastrous tenure in Tampa Bay makes him less likely to get a head coaching gig.

02/06/2019 - 3:33pm His signing was just…

His signing was just officially announced.

You can be 100% certain that he actually signed in December. Both Matt Dudek and Harbaugh mentioned him right after the early signing period. That's a big no-no unless he had already sent in his LOI.

02/06/2019 - 2:25pm The dynamics for Schiano at…

The dynamics for Schiano at OSU changed a lot.

Rather than working for his self proclaimed best friend, he finds himself working for a new boss. Schiano is older than Day, been at OSU longer and has experience as a HC in CFB which Day does not. Schiano was actively trying for a HC job too. It sounds like it could be uncomfortable for both of them.

I'm ignoring the rumors that Meyer was also look to replace Schiano. Cycling through coordinators appears to be part of his coaching philosophy and that need not apply to Day.

NE is a much better fit. Whether he can meet Belichick's standards for the job remains to be seen.

02/06/2019 - 12:49pm There are a lot of worse…

There are a lot of worse contracts than Jackson's now that it only has 1 year+ left to run. Jackson has gone from being untradeable to being a guy you can swap for another team's problem.

02/06/2019 - 10:42am I don't think Hoke's overall…

I don't think Hoke's overall record was nearly as important as his recent record. Losing a bunch of games when he started at Ball State would be a foolish thing to hold against him. He proved he could win at two different G5 schools.

That, plus the rest of his resume, was enough to get serious consideration for Power 5 HC jobs. Not Michigan level jobs. There's a big difference in expected resumes for Iowa State, Utah, Syracuse, etc versus a top tier program.

02/06/2019 - 10:33am "A commit is a commit" is…

"A commit is a commit" is just not true. It all depends on what is said when the recruit is offered and when he commits and we don't know what that was. We only get to hear one side of the story. Recruits rarely report their offers as grayshirts.

Sam Webb talked on WTKA this morning about what Pesek-Hickson's HS coach told him. He clearly did not blame Harbaugh and welcomed him to recruit any of his players in the future. The damage done to Harbaugh's future recruiting is probably zero.

I wonder if the Michigan offer was what he needed to boost his stock and get another Power 5 offer.

02/06/2019 - 9:41am Actually, Brady is showing…

Actually, Brady is showing that humility is a trait he has in abundance. Good for him.

02/05/2019 - 6:37pm The Michigan Daily referred…

The Michigan Daily referred to "academic misconduct". That' could mean several different things, but doesn't sound like an issue that can be fixed by raising his GPA or passing a class. Everett Golston came back after missing a season for academic misconduct, but he was suspended by Notre Dame, not kicked off the team.

02/05/2019 - 6:22pm JUCO should not be an option…

JUCO should not be an option for a senior. He would not be eligible to play at one, nor would credits transfer from a two year school.

Obviously we don't know what's going on, but one path to returning would be to sit out football for a year while taking classes at Michigan or somewhere nearer home. He's not a desirable transfer candidate. Not if he has to sit out next season, then is free to leave as a grad transfer.

02/05/2019 - 4:16pm Saban lost nearly all of his…

Saban lost nearly all of his assistant coaches, including Anoma's. Might not be the reason, but I can't help but wonder what the atmosphere is like there now. It's a very strange situation.

02/05/2019 - 1:28pm Yes, this seems like the…

Yes, this seems like the best way to try and climb higher up the coaching ladder. It was either this or take an OC job at a MAC level school. That wouldn't pay as well.

02/04/2019 - 6:30pm If he just wanted to play,…

If he just wanted to play, he'd stay at CMU. If he wants to make the NFL, he should  believe that he's good enough to play at Michigan. It's not like he's a QB. He's at a position that rotates heavily, has no returning starter and only one player with much experience. It's a good opportunity for someone who wants to move up a level or two and show what he can do.

02/04/2019 - 5:25pm I mostly play DDR. I'm…

I mostly play DDR. I'm guessing it has almost nothing in common with these games.

02/02/2019 - 11:42pm Maybe they've just gotten…

Maybe they've just gotten their acceptance letters from the school.

01/31/2019 - 9:47pm Joining the conference…

Joining the conference should be good for Rutgers finances, just not for their AD's bottom line. The academic side may be less visible to fans, but it's more important.

It also shows some bad planning by their AD. They gave Ash a contract they can't afford to buy out of. It would have been wiser to be extra thrifty in the most expensive sport and try to be competitive in basketball. That was at least feasible.

01/30/2019 - 10:41am The key pieces to the…

The key pieces to the defense are Teske, Simpson and Matthews. They were recruited well before they were ready or eligible to make big contributions.

Yes, there is more to having a great team defense than having great individual defenders. But, this wouldn't be nearly the defense it is without them.

01/30/2019 - 8:53am People were taking the worst…

People were taking the worst points of reference and saying things would never get better, only even worse. They do the the exact same thing with football. It's their anger talking, with objectivity out the window. They need someone to blame.

01/30/2019 - 8:46am Eh, I hear that all the time…

Eh, I hear that all the time and don't think that's right. Beilein had always shown more flexibility than he was given credit for. He let long time assistants go before, went away from the defense he was known for, etc. Let's not forget that he turned that season around too.

While Yaklich has done a great job, Beilein had assembled the pieces needed to have a great defense 3½-4½ years ago. Simpson and Matthews are quite different than the prototypical Beilein players. Put Winston and Battle on the team instead and we'd be talking a lot less about Yaklich and the team would still be great.

01/29/2019 - 11:41pm The only thing missing was…

The only thing missing was Jim Jackson on the broadcast. X got his revenge for what he said about him and Lima during the Indiana game.

01/29/2019 - 9:58pm And of all the 5s in the…

And of all the 5s in the league, they go after Drummond? Lots of teams are interested in Davis and if we're throwing in 3rd teams to facilitate a trade, that puts a lot of 5s into play. We've already seen that no matter how many teams have needed a PG, none were going to take Reggie Jackson and his contract.

01/29/2019 - 8:44pm Why would NO trade Moe, Ball…

Why would NO trade Moe, Ball and KCP for Drummond? That's in effect what they would be doing and that's not how you build a roster, taking on Drummond's contract. They could make a better deal with another team.
