16 turnovers, 17 personal fouls from key guys and no points from Iggy and only 5 from Matthews.  It was bound to happen ... an off night from everyone (x-Teske).

01/19/2019 - 11:30am Would be a shame to lose…

Would be a shame to lose anyone as Gattis implements a bunch of 10 packages to get all that speed in space.  Sam Webb Said on his show there was never a time UM went true 10 personnel.  Hope these experienced guys have held off the transfer talk to see how workouts are different under Gattis' plan.

Would like to see Evans and 4 true WRs (DPJ, Collins, Black, Bell/Martin) in a package of up-tempo plays to break tendencies and bust things wide open. The promise is an explosive attack for 2019 which has to mean a lot more touches for WRs.

01/18/2019 - 7:17pm Reloading the coaching team…

Reloading the coaching team is great to see.  New young blood is invigorating.  Personally, I am OK with Mattison moving on as he seemed to have been descending with the DL group.

It will be interesting to see how Brown assigns the defensive coaches.  I would put Partridge back on LBs/Viper as a sub-leader for Nua in the front seven group.  Then put Campanile at safeties and have Zordich as the senior DB guy in the pass defense.  Zordich is a great position coach and really gets elite performance from his group. He could really add something to the safety room as a mentor for Campanile's guys.

Defense is going to be better than folks are projecting. This is a bit of blind faith, but Brown is an awesome football coach ... so feeling good about 2019.

Sorry, I killed my Twitter account long ago ... but to all of you who can please tweet the world that this guy is a pathological liar.  How can anyone believe one word he says ?  I mean, this guy enabled a wife-beater and sexual deviant to coach college kids. And word on the street is Zach Smith was the OSU bagman coordinator.  Expose this shit NCAA ... where the fuck are you?

Double dealing [delete by self] f-ing biggest dirt bag in the history of all-time pathetical liars.

How can anyone hire this guy for anything other than the ganitor position in a prison ... or the assistant AD position at OSU ?

Love this hire. Hungry. Passionate.

Not 70 years old ... goodnight Matty, please turn out the lights at OSU when you leave that piece of shit.

We have a Nua way and it is awesome.  Go Blue !!!

Enos is a prick and Satan deserved him.  My opinion - we dodged that Sparty d.b.

01/17/2019 - 5:08pm This is not delusional, but…

This is not delusional, but will be somewhat opponent dependent.  If we can just pound the rock to 42+ points, that is likely what we do.  But if we need to go with 10 or 11 personnel more often to get to 42+ points, we will have that in the arsenal.  That is the difference.

I believe last year was a great building block to this Gattis approach as Coach Ed has already built the right kind of run game and blocking schemes to support the overall approach.  The install of the expanded pass game will be the most challenging for the WRs ... and a bit of a bummer for TEs and FBs as their snaps will diminish.

But look at the elite players.  Monkeys could coach Bama's quality and win the title.

01/16/2019 - 9:28pm And unfortunately he gets…

And unfortunately he gets every best 5-star to have the #1 recruits every year.  Is it about X's and O's or Jimmy and Joes ?  Until we get more elite players we ain't going to beat Bama.

Good mix of old school and young blood.  Not sure about you all, but I am excited to see how this comes together for 2019 and beyond.  Go Blue !!!

01/16/2019 - 4:48pm Anybody notice on the…

Anybody notice on the football Coaches page that Don Brown is listed as both DC and Linebackers coach?  Seems like they need to now officially assign defensive roles for 2019 given they have Nua for DL.  Right now positions via UM's football page are:

  • Don Brown = DC / LBs
  • Campanile = No position listed
  • Partridge = STC / S
  • Zordich = CBs

That means Murray is gone - either NFL draft or A's minor league.

Who is better Hurts or Fields ?  Certainly, Hurts is more proven as a college player.  Hurts would probably have been a better fit for OSU with Fields a better fit for OU.

It is starting to get like free agency with that 5th year transfer rule and a lax NCAA.

That Ao dude is a fucking hack job - what a dirt ball.  I can't believe how bad Illinois plays basketball, just junk yard garbage.  They need a new coach and less thug-like players.  Not sure they will win any more B1G games this season.  Not impressed.

01/10/2019 - 5:23pm Coach Gattis is that…

Coach Gattis is that catalyst for offensive change - young, aggressive and good recruiter.

Hope we can keep Coach Ed to build a lasting improvement to our OL group.

Maybe Harbaugh names those two guys co-OCs.   Would be a good mix of talents and Coach Ed could help develop Gattis as a coordinator.

01/10/2019 - 12:40pm My OU friends tell me Murray…

My OU friends tell me Murray is 100% going football.  Either this year if high enough in the draft or there is some smoke he comes back to OU for an additional year.  Why?  He won the Heisman trophy and the football endorsement money (signings, speeches, golf outings, shoe deal, etc) from that award alone is huge ... averages about $1 million per player over a football career plus it opens doors to a ton of other football related things.

Also, he only hit .300 in college ball.  If he can't hit a major league curve ball he will never rise out of the minors.  That A's contract is a total flier that he can develop into an on-base maven and strong-armed shortstop.

01/10/2019 - 12:26pm Makes sense.  Josh Rosen is…

Makes sense.  Josh Rosen is not a fit for a Kingsbury offense.  However, Rosen could be a good successor to Eli Manning at the NYGs.

01/10/2019 - 11:50am Honestly - AW was hired to…

Honestly - AW was hired to recruit Ohio, not coach LBs.  He had no prior LB coaching skills.  Michigan has always had strong DLs with or without GM.  Both AW and GM are replaceable from a pure coaching standpoint.  The uncertainty is on recruiting, especially keeping the momentum going in Ohio. The new DL coach needs to have Ohio connections like AW brought to the effort.

I would like to see DB do the following:

  1. Retain Zordich with more money and a title
  2. Move Partridge back to LBs/Vipers and give him a raise
  3. Add Devin Bush (senior) to the staff covering Safeties and recruit head for FLA
  4. Add a young DL coach that can recruit Ohio

I think we can actually get stronger, coaching-wise, with the right guys aligned to their positional expertise on defense.

On offense, priority #1 is a new multi-year contract for Coach Ed.  Harbaugh is the OC, so changing out Pep isn't the issue.  The development of a more "wide-open" offense could use a catalyst however, like adding an offensive analyst expert in the college passing game as a consultant for JH and PH.  Heck, Shea could probably provide that kind of input.

01/10/2019 - 8:18am There has to be some reason…

There has to be some reason our bowl record is such an outlier  - it goes all the way back to Bo's era.  Maybe it is because our final exam schedule is right in the middle of bowl prep?

For example, OSU's finals are Dec 6-12 and UM's are Dec 13-20.  Basically, the week off at the end of the regular season for the players at OSU is exam week and then they come back 100% focused on bowl practice.  Heck, they don't even have classes to get in the way of player led practices during the 3 weeks of bowl prep.

Michigan is the only school that has final exams that late in December.  I know when my son came home after his UM finals he basically slept for two days ... wiped out until after x-mass.

01/09/2019 - 10:23am Pure speculation, but I…

Pure speculation, but I think you could see Partridge going back to LBs/Vipers and Devin Bush (senior) added as the Safeties coach.

01/09/2019 - 10:02am Yes - DB used the trap zone…

Yes - DB used the trap zone in the Penn State game and it worked well (see Long INT).  He tried it against OSU but was torched by Haskins anyways - they prepared for it.  Biggest issue for UM's defense was no pressure on Haskins by the DL plus Bush went out and ultimately our slot coverage guys lack speed equal to Parris Campbell.

DB is never going all zone, that is not his base defense.  He is adding Dax Hill and Quentin Johnson, i.e. elite speed at safety to cover elite slot receivers.  Both will see the field as freshman.

01/08/2019 - 7:17pm Yes, a few weeks ago likely…

Yes, a few weeks ago likely.  Warde and Harbaugh worked up a new contract with Don Brown to shut that down.

01/08/2019 - 7:10pm I think they were waiting…

I think they were waiting for Washington to decide on taking UM's DL offer.  When he choose OSU they executed plan B.  All along I think Mattison wasn't going to get renewed if Washington accepted the DL job.  Mattison jumped on OSU's "senior statesmen" role as a bit of an "f-you" on his way out.  Just a gut feel.

01/08/2019 - 6:50pm New multi-year contract for…

New multi-year contract for Don Brown.  Partridge back to LBs/Viper with new title.  Zordich a new multi-year contract.  New Safety coach is Devin Bush (senior).  New DL coach announced.

Brown has finished his self-scout and is ready to reload his defense for 2019.  Time to develop some new dudes.

01/08/2019 - 2:50pm This is more about thwarting…

This is more about thwarting UM's recruiting inroads to Ohio versus them needing Washington on staff.  Was hoping he would stick around to take our DL job, but whatever.

With these openings Brown has the chance to revamp and invigorate his staff.  Will be interesting who he picks to fill these roles.  Personally, I would like to see Partridge move back to the LBs/Viper and Zordich to take on all of the DBs ... S and CB could be better integrated, especially if we are going to add in more of the disguised zone looks.  Clemson did an awesome job integrating zone and man concepts, which we flashed a couple of times during the season.

01/08/2019 - 9:18am Bookies make these odds not…

Bookies make these odds not football people.  Michigan should be like 25-1 but if they set the odds to reality then UM's fan base would overwhelm the book.

01/08/2019 - 8:51am The biggest gap is OL and…

The biggest gap is OL and pass pro.  If Clemson had UM's OL, they get blown out by Bama.  Clemson has built an elite OL and DL.  That has taken time to achieve, last year was our first year of OL progress and the 2019 OL recruiting class is outstanding.  Just need to keep Coach Ed for a few more years.  Harbaugh had a poor start with Drevno.

01/08/2019 - 8:41am Agreed - need to find one Mo…

Agreed - need to find one Mo Hurst per recruiting class.  We missed on our DT choices the last few years.

01/08/2019 - 8:28am Not one of Michigan's…

Not one of Michigan's starters would start for Alabama.  Only a few would make the 2-deep.

Clemson's OL in pass pro was outstanding.  Lawrence had all day in the pocket and that never happens versus Alabama.

01/08/2019 - 8:24am Not at skill positions like…

Not at skill positions like DB and WR.  Our 3-star DBs don't have the elite speed of a 4/5-star.  Scouts measure these kids and 3-stars at skill positions have physical defiencies.  You can't teach speed and that is where OSU torched us.

01/07/2019 - 2:49pm I think Brown is staying,…

I think Brown is staying, otherwise Temple would have already announced him.  Furthermore, I think Brown finished his self-scouting and did not renew Mattison.  Gut feeling is that Al Washington was promised the DL position plus a chunk of Greg's $ to stay.  Also, gut feel is that Bush (senior) was promised the Safety job and Partridge is moving back to LBs/Viper.  If true, I think we won.  Why ?

  1. Solidifies young recruiters for Ohio, NJ and Florida
  2. Puts position coaches in their best, highest use based on skill set
  3. Adds more NFL pedigree to the staff

I just don't get OSU hiring Mattison, other than to poke Harbaugh in the eye and steal some secrets.

01/07/2019 - 2:13pm Agreed - I bet they promised…

Agreed - I bet they promised Al the DL job and a chunk of Greg's $ to keep him.  Next moves?  Partridge back to LBs/Viper and Bush (senior) to Safeties.

This all makes sense to me.  Brown is not going to Temple.  He finished his self-scout and is addressing his needs at UM.  (1) younger coaches for recruiting (2) recruiting strength in Ohio, NJ and Florida (3) senior tutelage for a young LB crew and (4) damn good safety coach who can recruit and get guys to an NFL level of performance.

01/07/2019 - 1:59pm I don't get this for OSU. …

I don't get this for OSU.  They should be looking for a younger guy.  And having two DL experts on staff is really over-kill for OSU.  Other than just to poke Harbaugh in the eye, I don't get this hire by Day.  If we keep Washington as a result, I think we are winning the tradeoff.

01/07/2019 - 1:50pm Mattison is telling players…

Mattison is telling players that Harbaugh/Brown did not renew his expiring contract.  More to this story ... maybe the self-scout of the defense put the blame on the DL for the season-ending meltdown or maybe they promised the DL job to Washington (+$) to keep him or maybe both?

Next move?  I am betting Partridge back to LBs/Vipers and Bush (senior) to Safeties.

01/07/2019 - 1:39pm It appears Harbaugh and…

It appears Harbaugh and Brown decided not to renew his expiring contract, so there is more to this story not being told.  I guess the self scout of the defense put the blame on the DL or maybe they had to promise Al Washington the DL job to keep him.

Does Partridge move back to LBs/Viper and Devin Bush (senior) is hired as the new safeties coach ?

01/06/2019 - 10:44am What he said is "there is…

What he said is "there is talk of that happening, more passing on early downs" ... maybe Shea becomes the OC given he has the most experience in the spread?

01/05/2019 - 2:27pm The Lions fired their OC -…

The Lions fired their OC - Jim Bob Cooter.  I doubt Pep is a candidate for OC.  More likely for QB coach.  George Godsey, current QB coach, may get promoted to OC creating an opening for a QB coach.  Pep fits the ball control mindset the Lions want to develop.  Cooter was kept on at the request of Matthew Stafford. Both Godsey and Davidson fit the ball control mold and were brought in by Patricia last year and thrust onto Cooter.  One of those guys is probably going to get promoted to OC.  Pep fits their offensive philosophy.

01/05/2019 - 1:52pm Jay's recruits are damn good…

Jay's recruits are damn good ... 4-star Turner and 5-star Chardonnay (my nickname for Zach).  Jay is an ascending coach.  Look at the RB production last year, it was the bright spot of the offense.  He also did a great job with TEs, which seemed to regress last year when he left that group.  The evidence says Jay is a good football coach.

01/05/2019 - 1:41pm Agreed.  And that…

Agreed.  And that collaboration was dynamic with Jedd.  My first watch in person was the 2015 BYU game and the pass attack was dynamic.  I was like "wow, Just wow - great play calling".   His use of motion and play action was fantastic.

Pep's ball control philosophy worked at Stanford because he had the personnel to make that work.  It is not a bad approach, it just requires a certain set of players.  We seem to have moved away from that based of the current personnel and recruits, so maybe the "handwriting is on the wall" and Pep goes back to the NFL.  He is a quality football guy in the right system, so he can add value to the right team.

01/05/2019 - 12:37pm To make the playoffs, we…

To make the playoffs, we likely need more offense than that.

The 2018 leaders:

  • #1 OU - 570yds split 247run / 323pass at 8.6pp
  • #2 OSU - 535yds split 171run / 364pass at 6.6pp
  • #3 Clemson - 530yds split 256run / 274pass at 7.3pp
  • #4 Bama - 528yds split 202run / 326pass at 7.9pp
  • #10 OKSt - 500yds split 190run / 310pass at 6.4pp
  • #50 UM - 420yds split 204run / 216pass at 6.1pp

It will be interesting if Clemson can keep up with Alabama.  I don't see Clemson putting up 256 yards of rushing on Bama.  Going to be a long night for the Tigers.
