Seth, I don’t quite understand this. Do you think he had a chance to sign in December or not? If yes, and he wanted to go to Michigan, then he can only blame himself for not signing and then watching the roster to fill up. If no, then he actually had two months to decide where else to go, not two days.
What am I missing?
|01/30/2019 - 1:44pm||I'm having trouble getting…||
I'm having trouble getting acquainted with all of this since my school has only recently transitioned to basketball from football as the primary focus of athletic interest. I have enjoyed this transition because I really enjoy watching Beilein teams. Especially when they win. I even paid for the annual KenPom subscription. I've watched almost every game this year, all of them since Villanova.
But the first Ball Screen article lost me at "Ball Screen". I'm not sure how a Ball Screen differs from a Flat Screen or a Ball Point. Looking through the pictures in either article, all I see is men running around playing basketball.
If anybody needs me, I'll be reading Basketball for Dummies on my vacation next week. At some point, maybe I'll be able to come back to these excellent analyses and understand them a little.

I know this is pie-in-the-sky fantasy, but wouldn’t it be cool if Michigan could schedule its own Jan 1 bowl game anywhere, against any agreeing school after the regular season played out?
Sure, maybe they’d have to reserve a facility. Somewhere warm. I haven’t worked any of this out obviously. Maybe we could play Florida every year, like Groundhog Day.

If I knew how to put a gif in here it would be of a knee jerking.
Jesus, people, this is not such a big deal. In two years Solomon was not an important contributor. The 2019 class has incoming studs in the DL interior in Smith and Hinton. Relax. We'll be fine.

|12/04/2018 - 5:30pm||I think of it as limited to…||
I think of it as limited to really big programs like Michigan and roughly the top third of P5 schools. Big in terms of constituencies -- fan base, alum base, former players, the students, the press -- and also, of course big money involved.
Rich Rodriguez was not a "CEO" type of coach and it hurt him. He didn't get buy-in from all of those constituencies. Hoke was better at the off-field parts of that, but wasn't a good manager of his own program internally.
Harbaugh's idiosyncrasies make him more of a "maverick" type of CEO, which doesn't work everywhere, but sometimes works wonderfully.
|11/21/2018 - 11:24am||this is a nice effort, but…||
this is a nice effort, but you left out one of the fundamental yardsticks of offensive or defensive performance: Yards per Play. So, I've done it for you and it boils down to this: with Bosa, 5.2 YPP, without Bosa, 6.2 YPP. That's a meaningful difference, but you also ignore the fact that two of those first three opponents are terrible at football and the third, TCU isn't good at it either. My reading of it is that Bosa was replaced with someone nearly as good and it's not the difference-maker to OSU's relative collapse in the second half of the season.

Holy shit. I spend a lot of time on Twitter. ZS has one Big steaming pile of trouble on his account at this point.
At some point, your heart does need to turn toward sympathy for the guy because he is clearly a lost soul and he just made his life so much worse.

I did watch his film several months ago. I didn't think he looked nearly as good as Gary at the same stage. He looks like he could use some more weight. I'm sure he's awesome off and on the field, but #5 overall had me scratching my head a bit.

Let’s not forget also that those two classes were huge, like 60 players overall. 20% is not out of the ordinary. And, look up and down the two-deep and it’s dominated by those two classes. So, I would say not a failure to retain.

Do you listen to the Friday podcasts? The part with the clip of Bo saying "the most important game of this season is the one you're about to go down that tunnel for". And, you know what, they run that clip every week.
That should answer your question.

Latest Line in the Chicago Tribune this morning has it as "Off". I don't know who the Trib uses as its source. "Off" says to me that the books don't know what to do with it or that betting is volatile and they're taking it off-line. Obviously, I don't get it. Can someone splain?
Oh, and people, please: Northwestern University should be abbreviated as NU. thanks.

Some people are color-blind. I'm graphics-blind. I look for words on the screen and don't readily "see" pictures in front of me. I'm terrible at comprehending cartoons, for instance. So the change of graphic scenery is a non-issue for me.
I too will wait for the kinks to get worked out -- one that I know of is the Depth Chart by Class that's currently available is an older version, from last year.

In my mind I see Barrett with a very high FOOTBALL PLAYER score in terms of talent and IQ. Very excited about him.

Ending this piece with something about Viper, you made me wonder, out of no known corner of my brain, could Michael Barrett be a secret Viper in waiting? Isn’t he really similar to K Hudson in his HS background, I.e., RB/QB/athlete?
|04/30/2018 - 12:38pm||Newsome||
Brian, IIRC, the most recent thing you had to say about Newsome's status was somewhat bearish, along the lines of his rehab taking longer than it should. Putting him in the first group out is... brighter, no? (please, please, please).

|04/19/2018 - 10:21am||I agree with this||
I think Crowell's attitude toward Michigan is either the cause of his players coolness to Michigan or it's a reaction to Michigan's coolness to them. Either way, for whatever reason, it appears Belleville is whatever you'd call the opposite of a Pipeline.
Notice we're not hearing from the MLK or Cass Tech coaches on this.
|04/02/2018 - 4:15pm||Aw, crap.||
God damn you, SRJK. for the last 43 hours I've maintained a healthy, aloof, pessimistic detachment from this game. Now, you've gone and gotten me nervously excited. So, all you've really accomplished is guaranteeing me a bigger hangover tomorrow morning than usual. Thanks a lot.
|03/20/2018 - 2:34pm||Performance vs. KenPom projection||
I went back to the Game Previews for all of these last 11 games. Michigan outperformed the KenPom projection in 9 of them. (Outliers were Iowa in the B1G first round and Houston.) Michigan was KenPom underdogs in five of those games going in.
The average outperformance vs. the projected differential in all of those games was a whopping 10 points per game. So, Yeah, ESPN go ahead and seed them 15 out of 16. Please!
|03/08/2018 - 5:49pm||You don't really know||
TRU was owned by an alliance between Bain Capital and KKR who did a LBO on it a few years ago. At the time of the purchase they probably knew it was toast and figured they could liquidate it and come out ahead. They hired Brandon to lead that effort and no doubt Brandon knew exactly what he was getting into and charged with doing.
People saying TRU going bankrupt was DB's fault do not know what they're talking about. I'm sure DB is, as Brian put it, a "piece of shit human being". But that doesn't mean he's an incompetent CEO.
|02/12/2018 - 4:40pm||Not a fan||
I'm not a fan of golf in Arizona. Human settlements and golf courses should not be located in places where there is not enough naturally available water to sustain them.
That said, I've been to Scottsdale once to play golf on a boondoggle, fully comped. I gather both courses we played were very expensive. I don't think you'll have much luck finding courses that aren't expensive because they're hard to maintain due to the abovementioned fundamental shortage. Good luck, though.
And one legitimate playing tip: look for the highest mountain and keep in mind that everything slopes away from that, even though your eyes don't read it at all. During one round I stopped my golf cart on the path. thinking I was on level ground, I got out without setting the brake. The damned thing started rolling away from the mountain.
|01/29/2018 - 12:19pm||Am I the only one?||
I just hate these goddamned click-bait lists -- in order to see a list of 25 things, I would have to spend about 5 minutes loading and reloading from one page to the next, having the pages bounce around while ads spool up... no thanks.
I could subscribe to the magazine, but Forbes has been a piece of shit for a long time. Not displaying this list on one page is a great example.

|01/24/2018 - 9:08am||Easy, fella||
I was a solid RR supporter, thought he got shafted by a complete lack of support other than from fans like me.
All I’m saying here is those 8 guys you listed — exactly who I had in mind as RR “smurfs” — are not typical Harbaugh personnel. As for your last comment, come on, Man. That’s not me at all.
|01/23/2018 - 9:30pm||It’s looking that way||
A year ago, I thought this was going to be the strategic, small, selective class. And now it’s up to 21 with a couple more likely. This is the head-scratchingest class I can ever remember. And I’m not going to second guess the coaches; I never do. But, this reminds me of the early RR classes of All Smurfs. I get that the DL and OL hauls last year were awesome so not as much is needed there this year. But we’re now looking at a fall roster with 7 RBs, 16+ DBs, 10+ WRs and about 9 LBs under 225 pounds. This is not your grandfather Lloyd’s Michigan football team. And it doesn’t really feel like what I would have thought of as a Harbaugh team.
Edit: need to clarify “smurf”. RR recruited a ton of 150-170 pound athletes. This class only has a few that fit that description. But still, by harbaugh “Football Player” standards, a lot of the kids in this class are... not large people.

I am a 247 subscriber and am starting to think about dropping it. A long time ago I was a Scout subscriber and dropped it for the same reason I'm thinking of dropping 247 now: Scout sucks and has made 247 suck. One would have thought the consolidation would enhance 247, not water it down.
