That's saying something coming from you....they better sleep with one eye open.

02/05/2019 - 6:21pm Do you really think Harbaugh…

Do you really think Harbaugh built his coaching tree by hiring young guys, giving them lofty titles and the handcuffing them?

If that were the case this time he'd have a hard time attracting talented assistants going forward

01/29/2019 - 2:04am Hijacking a thread right…

Hijacking a thread right from the top to bitch about Pep...get over it.

The obsession with this one guy is borderline insane on this board.

01/18/2019 - 8:19am Cry, The Beloved Country…

Cry, The Beloved Country with Richard Harris...outstanding acting.

01/15/2019 - 8:05am There's a bit of room…

There's a bit of room between elite and 'got 3 QBs killed just last year' don't you think? Not many teams had worse Oline pass blocking than UM. So baby steps to help the Oline build some confidence and semi-reliable depth.

Plus the new QB...the 5 star guy,  learning a new offense..also missed significant time in his two prior seasons because of injury

01/11/2019 - 4:54am Devry Hamilton flipped on…

Devry Hamilton flipped on signing day and Grant Newsome's injury were a factor too. Then you had the guy from NY that everyone figured was heading to UM and end up at Georgia (Cha-Ching). So, its not for lack of trying.

01/10/2019 - 5:25pm I think you are selling…

I think you are selling coach short....he's built a strong coaching tree and has had quite a few coaches move up and out from his program..so he's clearly good and grooming coaches. Now, if he had a reputation of hiring guys and not taking their input seriously he wouldn't have attracted so many quality coaches to come work with him.

He's also shown a willingness to adapt within the construct of the type of O he runs.

I think he's willing to throw it around but wants a balanced attack much like he had with Ruddock. But this year I think he was rightfully concerned about the Oline getting his QB killed again.

01/06/2019 - 1:31pm Well considering his overall…

Well considering his overall resume as a HC I guess the answer is "yes"

01/05/2019 - 4:19am Not paywalled but apparently…

Not paywalled but apparently the content can't be viewed outside the US for security reasons. Must be some really top secret Intel.

01/03/2019 - 3:26am A year ago at this time…

A year ago at this time people were saying pretty much the same about Drevno...Harbaugh would NEVER let his best buddy go...then Warriner happened.

Its silly and juvenile to suggest that OSU making a coaching hire should have any impact whatsoever on the timing of staff changes at UM.

12/29/2018 - 11:45am Anyone that survived the RR…

Anyone that survived the RR and Hoke years most definitely cares...anyone that spends time on this board cares (even if they are like the cool kids and pretend otherwise)...I def care and will root hard for the young men out there just like I always have.

The fans feeling sorry for themselves is pathetic esp when you consider that for the most part all we have to do is sit back..watch and either celebrate or bitch. The young men..are out there busting their butts and taking the hits...with some resulting in serious injury.

12/26/2018 - 11:27am Love Don Brown like most…

Love Don Brown like most around here but I don't imagine the conversation between him and Harbaugh was a comfortable one after this game..

No way UM should have played this poorly and been this poorly prepared on D...and its primarily on the coaches. A performance this bad, in a game of this importance is perception altering (certainly to one C-Bus area high profile recruit and his family) and it will take a full season for the program to get a shot at fixing this...because next year the D could come out lights out again through every game leading up to it..but everyone will wait until the Game to make any real judgement on Don Brown and the D.

12/11/2018 - 3:09pm Knew it would get this type…

Knew it would get this type of reaction..yes I've heard 'come to mommy'.every day...all you have to do is walk out the door..its not at all uncommon.

But go ahead and stick your head back in the sand....

12/11/2018 - 12:15pm Wonder if he refers to his…

Wonder if he refers to his MOTHER as Mom, mother, mum or momma...?

(pet-peeve...far too often this comes with certain racial overtones...I believe it is generally unintended..but 'momma' is rarely used when talking about the Winovich's and Gentry's on this and other teams)

And to be clear, this is NOT a shot at you Dr....as it happens fairly regularly around here (and on Sports blogs) and each time I see it I wonder how the young men and their families feel about this.

12/09/2018 - 3:02pm Here are two other…

Here are two other differences...

College football has a lot more moving parts and the margin of error is significantly less. When Harbaugh took over UM was weakest at the two of the most important positions : QB and Oline. Fixing those, esp. Oline, can take years. UM has essentially had a lost decade of Oline development that is only just now starting to round the corner.

Second...all it takes is one play to alter a season in CFB. MSU's miracle punt block TD and OSU 'he was short' in DOUBLE OT...those were both single play, season altering plays. Flip those around and the narrative around Harbaugh today is drastically different.

12/08/2018 - 2:04am Wouldn't the relatively…

Wouldn't the relatively clean programs like UM want that too?

I always wonder why such programs stay silent when they know what's going on out there and it puts them at a significant disadvantage...they have to see it as they recruit many of the same players.

So why not snitch?

12/06/2018 - 6:13pm Of course the guys they are…

Of course the guys they are recruiting are aware of this..hence the comment about DeLoach and his parents. I'm sure this is a major recruiting tool as it should be.

What about the 10 or 11 games before 'the big rivalry game'? OSU loses to Rutgers :)

Ryan Day vs. Urban Meyer...

Yep..it will have an impact.

12/03/2018 - 12:31pm What's wrong with Kool-Aid?…

What's wrong with Kool-Aid? It's good for you right? Pass me a 40.

12/01/2018 - 7:00pm 30 yards and 3 pts per game…

30 yards and 3 pts per game behind 2016 OSU is only a shade off.

And your point about targeting the WRs is valid..I agreed but some of that falls on the shoulders of the QB. He is very accurate but he also had the tendency to bail on plays too early in a few games. And that might have had to do with the early season Oline woes. He also seemed to be quite comfortable throwing underneath to the TE's. And the WR's also had a lot to prove coming off of last year...they were not among the best receiving groups in the nation coming into the season.

But I think the main point is that THIS year I think Harbaugh was trying to get the team to develop an identity and confidence for the Oline around strong, dominant run blocking, minimize QB mistakes (Shea had a history of high TOs) and Defense. This got them to 'pretty good'.  However, I don't think Harbaugh is wedded to this approach...he has shown a willingness to open up the offense and go downfield to backs, TE's and WRs. And as I said that's what I expect to happen next year regardless of who is the OC because at the end of the day its going to be Harbaugh's offense.

12/01/2018 - 5:35pm Think you are reaching…

Think you are reaching....the Oline wasn't 'pretty good' going into the season,, it was awful and most expected that to be the case this year but it got to 'pretty good' through the season by repetition and building confidence. That is the most significant development this year...UM now has an Oline that can be counted on going into next year.

And you expected to go from last year to elite in one year? Would have loved to see that but going from the mess of last year to 'pretty good' this year is what opens the door to reaching elite next. Expecting to match this year's OSU teams offensive performance after what we saw last year was setting yourself up.

But this years ' pretty good' offense performance was on par with previous OSU offenses...this years OSU offense is on another level. And that might have something to do with their weaker than usual D. But its not like this years UM offense was behind what we've come to expect from OSU.

Now, I agree that I would have preferred more passes thrown to the WRs but Higdon's success helped to set up some excellent shots down the field at critical moments. And there were games where that 5-star QB was bailing out on plays too early and missed a number of downfield plays that were there for him (its not always the play-calling).

12/01/2018 - 3:05pm Of course 'fine' isn't the…

Of course 'fine' isn't the goal..but you've got to get to 'fine' (2nd in conference from 8th) before you can get to elite. And this year was a giant step in the right direction. UM has had a decade of poor Oline play and finally that looks like it may come to an end..but it was still a problem in the OSU game. You are severely limited on O if your QB is running for his life every other down.

But with the Oline being a work in progress throughout the season and a new QB w limited Pro-style experience it made sense to go with more of a ball control offense and wear teams down, eat clock and lean on the D. It looked to me like they consciously added a bit more to the O as the Oline developed confidence and consistency. Makes sense.

With that...and the losses on D..I would be shocked if Pep/JH didn't open the playbook up more next year. That's especially so if Shea comes back...it would be a year to really showcase his talents.

Frankly, if JH wants to bring in someone else fine with the talent returning on that side of the ball it will almost certainly take another step forward...probably even a leap now that the Oline is in good hands..but its ultimately HIS offensive philosophy and I never got the impression that he and Pep were not in sync.

12/01/2018 - 2:33pm Not saying the O was great…

Not saying the O was great and it certainly left point on the field but it also ate a lot of clock and the team was 2nd in scoring in the conference (up from 8th last year). The D got all the hype but I'm not seeing how the team simply relied on the D to win 10/12 games. When it won both sides contributed.

But in the OSU game it was the D that totally fell apart. 400 yards of Offense should be more than enough and gets UM the W in each of the last two seasons. The D was breaking records until it played a team with a real O.

12/01/2018 - 1:36pm I think its too early to…

I think its too early to speculate...

And I think Pep did fine with what he had to work with. Seems like a lot of people have a bias against him coming off of last years disaster but with a weak ass Oline, a fleet of Freshman WRs and QB injuries that doesn't make sense. This year the O was good enough to win every game on the schedule and it might have helped cover up some of the D's flaws by eating so much clock.

The 2 losses this year were as much or more on the D than the O.

12/01/2018 - 1:15pm Well he was first team All…

Well he was first team All American compared to you and your 1-star posts.

(I had to edit that from 3-star to 1-star...3 was way too generous for this JC recruit)

11/29/2018 - 4:18pm UM came into the season with…

UM came into the season with a ton of questions about it's Oline and particularly its ability to pass block. It returned 2 pretty good running backs. After last year, it made perfect sense to establish a reliable running game and not get the starting QB killed mid-way through the season.

And for much of the season it worked. The O moved the ball, put up good numbers and kept the D fresh.

Even in the debacle it wasn't the O that significantly under-performed it was the D.

11/29/2018 - 12:55pm So "somebody said"...and now…

So "somebody said"...and now you take this massive leap to assume that  Harbaugh is trying too hard to be Bo..wtf.

11/25/2018 - 3:34pm This is totally unfair and…

This is totally unfair and unreasonable. These are impressionable young men and with the 24/7 news and social media its damn near impossible to ignore the hype. And...IT..WAS...EVERYWHERE...UM no. 4, favored in CBus, Best D since...Heberstreit said, the stats say...UM was so close the last two games and this team is better than those so.....On and on...and the fans here and elsewhere were already dancing on OSU's grave.

How could that not affect the mindset of men of that age? And the coaches can't completely block out the outside world to them..not in this day and age. And on the flipside...you are talking about playing OSU, in CBus..they heard the hype too.

When Higdon got backed into making his 'guarantee' I felt sick. It was an awful question and a half answer that grabbed headlines. But, it was a sign that maybe a bit of overconfidence was slipping in post 'Revenge Tour' and it absolutely had to motivate OSU.

11/16/2018 - 9:05am This is exactly what comes…

This is exactly what comes to mind...he's trying to fuck shit up again...

UM wins he'll go on and on about being right...how he saw it all along.

UM loses and his message helped to wake up the Buckeyes...and 'if Harbaugh couldn't get it done this year...he may never get it done..blah, blah, blah..."

Herbie..just stop already. He'll be in the endzone with that shit eating grin and fake lobster tan if/when OSU scores a TD...

11/15/2018 - 2:42pm Well, its not in Indiana…

Well, its not in Indiana...you couldn't pay me enough to live in that state.

11/14/2018 - 7:49am Fair enough...its almost…

Fair enough...its almost always far more complicated than fans assume. Last year was about as bad as anyone could have imagined with the QB injuries and cluster at Oline. Not sure if any one person could have salvaged that Oline and QB-less offense. But I just assume that Harbaugh knows what he's doing and he would get it fixed...

That plus...8-5. As bad as that season felt...8-5 now feels like a floor for JH's program and considering where the program has been for the last decade that's not all that bad..

11/14/2018 - 7:18am Sooo....do people still want…

Sooo....do people still want to dump Pep?

Think he was a scapegoat for much of UM's problems last year and even into the early part of this season. But you could see from the beginning what Pep and JH were trying to do. Build consistency and confidence throughout an offense with so many new and critical pieces. And hold back on some of the more exotic stuff until the schedule stiffened.

It has paid off handsomely.

Its a tremendous staff on both sides of the ball.

Josh Mettelus

Check out his interviews. He seems like a natural leader and safety is a good position to lead from.

11/05/2018 - 5:24pm UM has had some great…

UM has had some great receivers over the years and has never been a school that slings the ball around. Same can be said for any number of other blueblood programs.

Besides even with the modest passing numbers, the WRs and TEs are a major factor in the O. They are getting some nice down field, highlight throws and that gets people talking.

11/05/2018 - 3:11pm He needs an editor:

He needs an editor:

"Michigan has run play action here to threw a drag route to the tight end."

Yikes how does that get published?

11/05/2018 - 1:04pm Spot on...

Spot on...

11/05/2018 - 11:09am Come on man...I seriously…

Come on man...I seriously doubt there'd be much discussion, let alone outrage, if OSU pulled the schollie on a recruit two cycles away from signing...that's a huge reach man.

11/04/2018 - 2:42pm Here's an idea...

Why don't…

Here's an idea...

Why don't we just start giving these young men the benefit of the doubt before rushing to negative judgment?

The whole assumption that he was ready to quit on the team was dead wrong from the jump but far too many here and elsewhere were willing to run with it.

Maybe then we wouldn't need a thread like this to counter that BS.

There are a ton of examples on THIS team of guys fans had basically given up on after last year and the ND game..but NOW...Runyan, JBB, Mettelus, Kinnel etc. are all good. Well there were always 'all good' but maybe they just needed more time, different/better coaching, better/different conditioning, a new girlfriend, a different dorm room...who the hell knows. But they were on this team and that should be enough to give them room, time and space to grow, improve and fulfill their potential w the full support of the fans.

10/31/2018 - 3:35am Josh is a good interview you…

Josh is a good interview you can see that he has strong communication skills and confidence two things that are critical at the safety position. He looks like an early candidate for captain on next years team.

10/30/2018 - 8:30pm He got crumbled...has to do…

He got crumbled...has to do better than that if he's going to excel at the next level.

10/30/2018 - 7:36pm I tend toward optimism…

I tend toward optimism entering every season so the record is pretty close to what I expected but the way the team has gone about getting there has been a pleasant surprise.

The strength and conditioning has been a major upgrade with UM consistently being the stronger team down the stretch even against roid rage stormtrooper U.

The Oline has obviously exceeded expectations but so has the depth of the Dline (Kemp and Paye), the play of Ben Mason , the much maligned in 2017 safeties and unheralded guys like Uche and Gil.  That's a lot of exceeding expectations....so well done coaches and players.

Re. K. Hudson this is the game where he needs to really make his mark. Intelligent and violent play from the Viper is critical to counter McSorley.

Re. Gentry...I'm not so certain about his blocking improvements. After watching him get crumbled a couple of times in the MSU game I think he still has a ways to go...but maybe (hopefully) that was an anomaly.

10/28/2018 - 2:50am Definitely...best QB…

Definitely...best QB situation UM has had in a long time.
