Ha, mis-remembered the distance to the Moon. It's 238k.

Named my first "new" car Alice when it went past 257k miles (as in, "To the moon, Alice!"). Prior to that it was just "baby", a red 1998 Honda CR-V.  Alice was eventually sold for $900, with over 458k miles at the time.  Don't have a pic of the car, actually, but did find this memento of the high mileage.

Can't seem to resize it. Grr.IMG_20140213_180937_0.jpg

I like that New is on a better platform.  I like the idea of the redesign, but I think the execution is flawed, and I've customized CSS & JS to try and deal with the things that bother me most (the huge header, the huge 4-article block, the confined width of content, copious whitespace, and not seeing authors on message board posts in the sidebar)

I hope some of my redesign ideas get incorporated down the road, but that's "graphical" and I can adjust (or customize locally)

I'm bummed that there's no reply notifications.  No flagging new content in the message board (the last post column is static, not current to help with caching/speed/server load), no way to contact board users privately.  In short, during this migration and adjustment, I'm getting way too wistful for Reddit-like behavior for such a similar crowd-based platform.

If you're using Chrome and you're really unhappy with how the site looks, you could try customizing it.  I've got a post on a thread from a few days ago that tells how:

Unfortunately, it doesn't do anything for mobile, where I still can't log in, and it doesn't get my thumbs up/down stuff working (I don't see the icons and supposedly should).

The MGOBoard topic list isn't realtime.  It only updates a row that has received replies recently, otherwise the Last Post age shown is not updated when you refresh the page, so it's not possible to identify "hot" topics getting recent replies - only posts with a high number of replies (but might be a day old)

Also on Chrome, I decided to customize things a bit.

I'm happier with the short(!) header, adjusted widths, and seeing author names in the "Message Board" list on the right now.

Consolidating separate comments here

If you use Chrome, you can get this extension:

  • User Javascript and CSS" ( )

In that extension, you can create custom javascript and css for any site.  I have created (imho) helpful tweaks for mgoblog you can copy.

function getAuthor(t) {
    var loadHolder = jQuery('<div></div>');
    var s = jQuery(t).find('a').attr('href');
    var c = jQuery(t).find('.views-field-comment-count .field-content').html();

    loadHolder.load(s, function(data) {
        jQuery(t).find('.views-field-comment-count .field-content').html(jQuery(data).find('.node__meta a.username').html() + " - " + c);

    jQuery('#block-views-block-duplicate-of-mgoboard-block-1 .views-row').each(function(i) {

#block-frontpagelogoheader {height: auto}
#block-frontpagelogoheader .field--name-body.field--type-text-with-summary.field__item {height:75px}
body{line-height: 130%}
h1, .heading-a{margin:0;line-height:auto;font-size:auto}
.layout-container {margin: 0 5%}
.thread-wrapper{margin:0;padding: 15px}
.block .content{margin: 10px 3%}
.layout-main-wrapper{max-width:100%;margin:0 2%;}
.layout-sidebar-second .main-content {margin: 0}
.layout-one-sidebar .main-content {margin: 0;width:70%}
.views-row + .child{margin-top:10px;margin-left:20px}

.view-primary-articles .views-row .views-field-title-comment-count {position:absolute;top:0;background:#fff;width:100%;display:block;left:0;padding:1%}

.node__content{font-size:1.5em;line-height:1.3em;padding:0 1%;}

The CSS gets rid of the really tall header & 4-panel content on the homepage, moving the actual content up to the top.

It also reformats comments and replies.

The Javascript updates the Message Board article list on the right-column to add Author names before the reply count, like the Diaries section above.

06/12/2018 - 10:07am Updated:

#block-frontpagelogoheader {height: auto}
#block-frontpagelogoheader .field--name-body.field--type-text-with-summary.field__item {height:75px}

h1, .heading-a{margin:0;line-height:auto;font-size:auto;}
.layout-container {margin: 0 5%}
.thread-wrapper{margin:0;padding: 15px}
.block .content{margin: 10px 3%}
.layout-main-wrapper{max-width:100%;margin:0 2%;}
.layout-sidebar-second .main-content {margin: 0}
.layout-one-sidebar .main-content {margin: 0;width:70%}

Definitely some of the same people.  That's almost unavoidable in a "small" town.  I worked at Fry and recognize some of the people on the HuEl site - but not most of them.

05/29/2018 - 1:44pm 4Runner for fun, Civic to run

On weekends I'm usually hauling kids or cargo and my old 4Runner gets about 17mpg. During the week I commute 55 miles each way every day and my manual '00 Civic gets 37-ish.
They're both paid-for and nothing I could buy competes for lower overall cost, but I keep wondering about a recent year hybrid.

05/04/2018 - 1:14pm Ace with a drawl?

You know getting your throat worked on may involve vocal rehab.  I'm waiting to see if Ace'll be talking slow and dropping some involuntary "fixin to", "might could" and "Roll Tide" on us in the next podcast he graces.

Good luck.

04/13/2018 - 5:14am "for a series"

02/01/2018 - 2:56pm Maybe we need an update on some others

Before I go posting a mushroom cloud version of a couch burning picture, it'd be nice to have a comparison presented between Michigan State, Penn State, Baylor, Louisville, Arizona, etc.  Not that they're all strictly comparable, but I've not heard what's up with Baylor or Arizona lately... Penn State didn't get nuked, nor Louisville... are those cases still progressing?  (Yes, I know about PSU.  Just an example)  Are they being scrutinized only by NCAA, only in-house, or also by their states or other organizations?  Does the outcome or timeline for any others have a bearing on expectations here?  Finding out what's up elsewhere might temper our own potential for homerism, which is what I'd expect from our fan base, honestly - especially given the last 2 excellent posts.

01/17/2018 - 10:13am Never regretted any soap

Never regretted any soap purchase, but sometimes I get to really liking one that stops being made.  Kinda dreading the day I run out of Catie's Bubbles' Honey Noir.

That's just an excuse to visit Maggards and find something new I like, and another razor.

12/19/2017 - 10:49am Was going to say this about

Was going to say this about RFID.  Even if there were multiple sensors on the ball to give orientation, RFID's range and accuracy aren't good enough to solve this problem at present (at least, not in the loss-prevention or access-control capacities I've been shown).

Next, what if gloves start getting similar RFID-shielding materials to try confusing or obfuscating sensors to angle for "benefit of the doubt" human interpretation when the tech fails?  Do we argue then about unfair advantage or sportsmanship?  Make rules about materials?

May as well not take the humans out of the process in the first place, to me, it leaves some of the "glory" of the game (arguing over calls/spots) intact instead of making the game closer to a contest of mere precise measurements, statistics and calculation.

12/14/2017 - 2:36pm Thanks!

I had no idea what you were talking about, but it was making me curious.  ATS' link put the pieces together and have helped sway my opinion. Good job.

12/14/2017 - 9:56am The Post Office has different

The Post Office has different classes of mail (bulk/first/overnight, etc) with different rates and speeds.  I've seen the argument that repealing NN would allow ISPs to have similar tiered cost/speed options.  I tend to oppose government intervention in anything, but I appreciate the ruling body utility in matters of safety and commerce, etc.  I'm not pro or con here... Why is the tiered traffic case different than the Post Office case?

12/14/2017 - 9:35am I'm not arguing against you

I'm not arguing against you in particular, yours is just the most relevant place I see to reply.  I want to clarify a thing:

Comcast blackmailed Netflix plain and simple, and won.

I say this based on my own tests during "the bottleneck" event.

As a comcast subscriber, (SE Michigan) I could not watch Netflix - the buffering was unbearable.  Other net video sources were ok.  I was using a DVD Player with Netflix, hard-wired to my router, which went to a cable modem from Comcast.  It had worked fine all along, and then horrible buffering.

As a test then, I turned on a VPN to PrivateInternetAccess (Chicago) on my router, and specified that all my network traffic go through it.  Amazingly, the buffering to Netflix ended immediately and it worked fine again.

Turn off the VPN, buffering was back.  "Bottleneck" my ass.  Comcast was deliberately throttling Netflix-specific traffic (they may have been routing Netflix traffic through a specific limited gateway vs actual traffic shaping, but same effect) and demanding a billion dollars to stop.  And they got it.  When they couldn't tell that the network traffic was going to Netflix because it was routed through a VPN and encrypted, they couldn't identify it to throttle it.

I hate hearing how they were somehow justified... they invented that bottleneck intentionally.

12/11/2017 - 11:58am Brian only called them that.

Human Element is the firm's actual name, but I gotta say HUEL is catchier.

It's not like they've folded - I saw recent position openings listed for them, so I imagine it's just a case of "your site is so funky that transitioning from old awesome to new awesome is harder than it looked and you have a high-use season coming up and it might be better to postpone than muck up your revenue stream just now."

[Edit, damn I'm slow.]

12/06/2017 - 1:37pm IHOP was closer.

08/25/2017 - 9:27am Mobility carts, mostly.

Grocery Stores:

People who drive mobility carts around the grocery store because they're enormous, but get up and can reach the Sugar Frosted Flakes on the top shelf, no problem; and expect me jump out of their way when they whir on down the aisle.

The guy in the 12 item lane who has 30 things.

The check out person who puts fruit in the shopping bag on top of bread.  I organize things on the belt and sometimes they still do it.

How expensive everything is at MDen.

Why do I have to show my receipt to get out of Sams Club?

Any asshat who parks so close I can't get my door open, or so crooked I have to crank the steering wheel just to back out of a parking space.

08/11/2017 - 1:23pm #91

First Brian writes about Samuels today and gets me misty-eyed re-watching Denard.

Now I see #91 and the room gets dusty over the early 90's Red Wings.

I don't usually follow hockey, but it's still powerful to see that number.  Is Nick Pastujov anywhere near that good, or is there another reason that's NOT invoking Federov?

08/08/2017 - 9:59am Bluetooth

My daily driver is a 2000 Honda Civic (manual), and for giggles/towing I'm reviving a 1998 Toyota 4Runner... But the first change I made on either was an aftermarket stereo with bluetooth, so I could get Google Music and wife could use Spotify.  I cannot stand commercials.
