From one Ghost to another Ghost, I always enjoy reading what GhostofJermainGonzalez posts.

12/24/2018 - 2:46pm Easy call.  For engineering,…

Easy call.  For engineering, Michigan is better.

12/21/2018 - 11:57am This is where I am at. …

This is where I am at.  Certain programs are cheating in ways way beyond what happens at Michigan (or really at the majority of power 5 programs).  The Jai Eugene LSU story, for example.

Yet it seem impossible that Michigan could totally clean, even if they wanted to be totally clean.

In an system with extremely lax rule enforcement, some participants will cheat wildly.  This leaves the others with little choice but to cheat in smaller ways (or just exit the system).

12/21/2018 - 11:35am Completely within the rules…

Completely within the rules.

Are you also going to argue that spending untold sums of wealthy donor $$$ to have top 15 facilities is also cheating?

12/19/2018 - 9:40pm Agree.

They might see…

They might see whether there are 1-3 decent fits from the guys that have not yet signed LOIs.

The small size of the class is really baked into the 4 month period of uncertainty over who would be OSU's HC going forward.

I had read that OSU was targeting up to 23 this cycle, depending on various factors.

12/19/2018 - 6:13pm Warning! Warning!  Thread…

Warning! Warning!  Thread jack alert!

Release the hounds!  Batten the hatches!  Hide your women and children!  There is a thread jacker on the loose!

12/19/2018 - 6:08pm Agree.

Meyer had OSU…

Meyer had OSU recruiting in the no. 2-6 range.

The best that can be reasonably expected from Day would be the no. 7-12 range.

12/19/2018 - 5:26pm OSU's unusually small class…

OSU's unusually small class this year can only work out well if Day is able to pull down the same number of 4/5 stars that Meyer did.  If that happens, then in theory Day can have a very large class next year that also has very few 3 star guys.

But it is very, very unlikely that Day is going to pull down the kind of classes that Meyer was able to pull down.

Much more likely:  Day will be able to gather 15-17 4/5 star guys in the 2020 cycle, and then will fill out the rest of his class (including the banked scholarships from the 2019 cycle) with 3 star guys.

Why is this so?  Because Day is not Meyer.  Meyer is in the argument for one of the very best CFB coaches ever.  He could pull down high 4 stars from all over the country because those guys wanted to play for a Meyer, a proven legend.

Can Day do that?  Seems very, very unlikely.  He's not going to have terrible classes.  But he is not Meyer and, therefore, will not have Meyer level classes.

12/19/2018 - 5:04pm It is simple.  The top 15 of…

It is simple.  The top 15 of Michigan is just slightly better than the top 15 of OSU (at least based on 247 ratings).

Further, there is no possible way that Michigan adding an additional 12 guys (to make 27 total) can be a negative in any way.  It can only be a positive, as some of those 12 will be important contributors, with 1 or 2 ending up as all big ten level guys.

Stated another way:  Michigan will surely get some positive benefit out of the 12.  OSU will get no such benefit because it has only 15 guys.

It is what is it.  All of the uncertainty over Meyer's future, and then hiring an unproven guy in Day,  meant that OSU's normally top 5 level recruiting dropped off.

OSU ended up with 3/4th (maybe just 2/3ds) of a recruiting class.  It is pretty good 3/4th (or 2/3ds) of a class, given the HC situation.

Nonetheless, 3/4th of a class is not as good as 4/4ths of a class, especially when compared to Michigan's sightly better 3/4ths + 1/4th 'extra.'

12/19/2018 - 3:12pm Michigan is not taking (and…

Michigan is not taking (and eventually processing) 12 'extra' guys per class.

The number 12 is just the difference between M (27) and OSU's (15) class sizes right now.

The majority of that difference of 12 is down to OSU's class being about 7 short of their target.

Another part of that difference is down to Michigan's 2018 class being a bit small (7-5 resulted in M missing on several guys at the end last year) and, therefore, M having a few more slots available this year.

12/19/2018 - 2:46pm We got Dax Hill for some…

We got Dax Hill for some very unique reasons.  He is a very strong student, and the rare 5 star for which Michigan's unique combo of academics, 40 year lifetime decision thing, and strong football program just happened to mesh.  Even then it was down to the wire.

Not many 5 star guys are like Dax Hill.  Not many are going to look at the entire package, but would care only about the football part.

So until M gets to the playoffs, 5 stars will be sort rare scenarios--the rare guy like Hill that actually does care about things a school has to offer beyond football, 5 stars guys from Michigan, etc.

Now if M does make the playoff, that will be a game changer for recruiting.

12/19/2018 - 2:37pm OSU's class is pretty good,…

OSU's class is pretty good, considering the circumstances.  But it is (1) well below the kinds of classes Meyer was pulling in, (2) currently much smaller than they ideally would have wanted, and (3) lost some key flips at the end.

Given the smaller than desired class size, OSU may try to add a few unsigned 3 stars before February, which would pull down the average.

12/19/2018 - 2:17pm Michigan pulled in a really…

Michigan pulled in a really great class, not just in the number of 4/5 star guys plus promising 3 stars, but also spread very well across position groups.

But it is not over.  Likely that OSU and/or PSU will try to add some guys that have not yet signed (unsigned verbal commits at other schools) before February--some 3 star lottery tickets of their own.

Could even be that Michigan tries to add an unsigned DE to the class before February.

12/19/2018 - 10:38am Keep this in mind.

Keep this in mind.

The three guys from the 2018 class that had the most impact on the field in 2019 were...

The last rated guy in the class (Jake Moody-Punter and now FG kicker)....

The 2nd to last rated guy in the class (Ronnie Bell WR), and ....

The top rated guy in the class (Aiden Hutchinson D-line).

Take away:  Hard to predict which true freshman will be most ready to have the most playing time.

Caveat:  Lots of guys that did not play much or at all as true freshman will still have big roles thereafter.

But from the 2019 class...Dax Hill is going to get a lot a PT from day 1.

M now has the third most 4/5 stars in the nation, after only Alabama and then Georgia.

Pretty good.

12/17/2018 - 9:38pm And your proposal to fix…

And your proposal to fix this is exactly what?

You are assuming that he was run off, or that he should have played over other guys this year.  But you can't know that to be true.  You are just inventing stuff to fit your narrative.

12/17/2018 - 9:27pm In terms of his rights to…

In terms of his rights to transfer, this UGA QB is no different than any other student.  He is permitted to transfer to any other university that will take him.  And he can do all of the things that students do from day 1 at his new school--take classes, do an internship, study abroad, whatever.

The NCAA imposes no limit on the rights of the UGA QB to transfer to another school and have the same rights and do all of the same things that the other students at the new school may choose to do.

12/17/2018 - 4:51pm Fair points.  OTOH...

Fair points.  OTOH...

Should each post be judged in isolation?  Or does a broader context matter?

Even if a post relays data, if the data post comes in the broader context of every or almost every post from the poster being negative and troll stuff, then...doesn't that matter?

Isn't the strong negative reaction to the OP in large part due to the fact that it is the zillionth negative post from the same person?  Even though this particular post conveys data, the timing, context, poster history, etc., makes it reasonable for people to conclude that OP's intent is to troll.

If M-Dog had made this same post (just picked him because he happens to be at the top of the Diaries posts rights now and is sometimes positive, other times negative, seems motivated only by giving his honest thoughts) the reaction would have been different.

12/17/2018 - 4:37pm Not sure about the FB in the…

Not sure about the FB in the article.

But I do know one thing.  In that one photo in the article there sure is a lot of holding going on.

12/16/2018 - 6:16pm Maybe not.

Anecdotally, I…

Maybe not.

Anecdotally, I do not recall Michigan throwing a lot in 1st halfs either.  IOW Michigan was not throwing a lot in the first half and then running a lot once the game was the lead has huge.

Several of Michigan's blowouts were not blowouts until later in the 3rd or even the 4th quarter.

Finally, top ten teams that were closer to 55% run (Clemson, OSU) than Michigan's 63% run would also have lots of blow out wins.

12/16/2018 - 5:38pm Great OP and great response…

Great OP and great response here.

Looking through the rankings and classes from pre-Meyer confirms what I had always recalled--(1) that OSU was not ahead of Michigan in recruiting, and also (2) that Michigan was more national and OSU more OH/midwest-centric.

It does seem possible that JH can reestablish Michigan as the top destination for recruits in the Big Ten.  But he has to win a conference title or two to really get the ball rolling down hill.

12/16/2018 - 10:07am Not very complicated.

Not very complicated.

With only a very, very few exceptions, every time an elite program replaces their best ever coach (who is also among the ten best ever in all CFB), the next guy is not as good.

Meyer won 90% of his games at OSU.  Almost impossible that Day will do that.

For people posting OSU will be the same under Day as they were under Meyer, what you are really saying is that you believe that Day will be as good as one of the best coaches ever in the history of CFB.

Think about it.  It makes no sense.  There is absolutely no rational reason to think that Day will turn out to be one of the best coaches in the history of CFB.

12/09/2018 - 11:39pm Admission standard are not a…

Admission standard are not a factor at all.  This is a myth that people won't let go of.

12/09/2018 - 11:21pm You are proving my point. …

You are proving my point.  In the real world Snipes gets punished.  The IRS does not equate Snipes' tax cheating with the waiter's undeclared tip income.  Both are not in compliance with the law.  On gets jail. Another is so trivial that the IRS does not bother to even enforce it.

But in your version of CFB, these cases are the same.  Level playing field and all...

12/09/2018 - 10:56pm Maybe they didn't like…

Maybe they didn't like Higdon being the guy to deliver the "body blows"?

Don't RBs usually want to tote the rock a lot?

Hard to fathom.

12/09/2018 - 10:38pm No really.  I am being…

No really.  I am being serious here.  Nothing you post angers me. Far from it.  I have things to deal with in real life that make anything anyone might do or say on a message board just trivial and unimportant.

At first I was just calling you out.

But after looking at your posting history and thinking about it for a few minutes I realized that this is sort of an unhealthy sign.  If you get some sort of charge out of trying to irritate people, really that is not a healthy, not a good sign.

Not joking here, at all.

12/09/2018 - 10:02pm No.  More concerned.

I just…

No.  More concerned.

I just don't get why people get a charge out of being a board troll.  Just seems like an unhealthy way to be.

I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but really you should consider refocusing your energies in a healthier direction.

12/09/2018 - 9:50pm All of your posts are troll…

All of your posts are troll post.

You don't even do a good job of faking it by sprinkling in a few non-troll posts.

You are not even a good troll.

Your troll game is...not very good.

12/09/2018 - 9:45pm Anyone know if/when Michigan…

Anyone know if/when Michigan is going to visit Harrison again?

Greene is not basing this on any new or particularly useful information, other than that OSU is going to visit Harrison again.

But if he is still taking visits from OSU, but not really going to take any more in home visits from Michigan...that would be a different thing.

12/09/2018 - 6:50pm Good idea.  --Sincerely, Dabo

Good idea.  --Sincerely, Dabo

12/09/2018 - 4:17pm Only half right.

There are…

Only half right.

There are strong reasons to believe that impermissible benefits cheating can be more complete, sophisticated, organized, etc., at certain places than others.

You too easily dismiss the role of cheating in building up and then maintaining for such a long period at Alabama what amounts to the greatest run (both on the field and in recruiting) in the history of CFB.

Sure the cheating alone does not explain why Dax Hill in particular flipped.

But it probably is one of the legs of the stool that turned Alabama into the greatest winner in CFB history.  Without that leg to the stool would have tipped, or at least wobbled, at some point in the last decade.  It helped make and then maintain Bama as a school that gets to the playoff most years and has won multiple NCs, and which in turn allows them to flip almost any guy they want.

I keep returning to it, but this looks a lot like Lance Armstrong and his 7 TdF "wins."   He was a top 5% cyclist to begin with.  But that alone would not get him 7 TdF "wins."

The cheating was a leg of his stool.  Most of the other riders used PEDs too, but for many more sporadically than, or at least not was efficiently and systematically as, Armstrong.  He was a phenomenal natural talent, and he trained like crazy.  But he was also the best cheater with PEDs of his time.  All of those had to come together to "win" the TdF 7 times.

Alabama's run since Saban arrived is just as improbable as 7 consecutive TdF wins.  Saban being a great coach is not enough to produce that result.

12/09/2018 - 3:39pm Weird argument.  And wrong.

Weird argument.  And wrong.

Sort of like saying that the playing field is level because....all are free to choose to be tax cheats and "that's their choice," and the fact that some only under report some tip wages is the same as Wesley Snipes paying no taxes at all on huge income for many years, makes it all a level playing field.

Got it.

12/09/2018 - 3:31pm This is whataboutism.  A…

This is whataboutism.  A troll favorite.

12/09/2018 - 2:30pm You have to include how much…

You have to include how much $$$ Saban is offering before anyone can answer your question.

If Saban were totally clean and offering $0, then I would have told my son to go to Michigan.

No difference in whether he would make the NFL or how high he would be drafted.

Dax Hill is a 3.9 student, so Michigan is better than Alabama for a 3.9 GPA kid.

Earlier playing time at Michigan.

Possible that Michigan fans would be wearing Dax Hill jerseys at Michigan for 30 years (like they wear Woodson jerseys now).  Won't happen at Alabama.

12/09/2018 - 2:18pm I like this post.  Good job.

I like this post.  Good job.

12/09/2018 - 2:12pm Alabama does not get to have…

Alabama does not get to have the most dominant run in the history of CFB without the cheating. The cheating helped create the dominant run of winning, which then allows Bama to flip almost any guy they choose.

"He [Saban] shows up at every single game with a better roster than the teams he's playing. If you count cheating and getting the best players in the country as part of running a program, he's the best in the country," the coach added.

12/09/2018 - 1:55pm Yeah, the lack of d-line…

Yeah, the lack of d-line pressure was pretty much fatal.

But I still think that even with d-line pressure, not being multiple on D, and running mostly press man one high is a bad plan against what OSU was doing on offense this year.

12/09/2018 - 1:43pm Ummm...did you even bother…

Ummm...did you even bother to read the OP?

12/09/2018 - 1:22pm I think the argument would…

I think the argument would be that Clemson is/was running a very good scheme that got the most out of its guys when they were first breaking through to the elite level.

Meanwhile, Michigan is running a scheme that does not maximize the guys on the roster, such as for example, getting DPJ only three touches per game, etc., etc.

12/09/2018 - 1:09pm Just to clarify, I meant…

Just to clarify, I meant that TD Billy Talyor's take was mostly wrong.

And yeah, not having a real WR coach in 2017 was not a good thing.

12/09/2018 - 1:03pm On the academic side,…

On the academic side, rankings track endowment size pretty closely.

Michigan is 9th largest, and Stanford is no. 4.

Bagmen are legal and encouraged in hiring the best faculty.  And Michigan has many billions for hiring the best faculty.

12/09/2018 - 12:58pm That is impressive.  But let…

That is impressive.  But let's be honest, Alabama is not the place you choose if you really put academics near the top of your priorities.  So Hill just values other stuff more.
