Doesn’t matter. Everything I said above stands

10/20/2018 - 12:42pm Just keep the horizontal…

Just keep the horizontal passing and zone running games going. Don’t panic. Use Mason. Control field position. Win.

10/19/2018 - 6:30pm On your computer with a VPN…

On your computer with a VPN. That’s how I watched every game last year when I was living next door in Singapore.

10/19/2018 - 6:00pm I’ve never thought it was a…

I’ve never thought it was a question of emphasis, but of attitude. MSU often plays like they have nothing to lose, while we play like we have everything to lose.

If we are focused and loose, we win. If we are tense and full of self-doubt, bad things could happen.

10/18/2018 - 11:39pm A lot of people assume rain…

A lot of people assume rain benefits MSU because they’ve won some big ones in the rain—which is true, of course. But usually thats because they are good at (a) stacking the box on defense and (b) inside running. This year they can do (a) but not (b). They are more reliant on the passing game than we are this time around.

I do think we will have a tough time running on them, but not as tough a time as they’ll have it trying to run on us.

10/17/2018 - 8:46am Amen.

2014, 2008 and 2009…

Amen.

2014, 2008 and 2009 are a set of experiences I hope never to relive.

10/17/2018 - 8:45am Interesting. I always…

Interesting. I always thought 11w was independent.

What's the network?

10/16/2018 - 7:26pm Now I’ve seen everything.

Now I’ve seen everything.

10/16/2018 - 10:48am Accuweather says “a couple…

Accuweather says “a couple of showers” in the afternoon. So a factor to consider but not to the degree it was last year.

Also, I’m curious...so last year the rain was a problem because we still couldn’t run the ball with consistency *and* our passing offense was terrible. This year we can run with much more consistency and our passing offense is pretty good (though not great). MSU, by contrast, looks more like we did last year.

Obviously they’ll bring their A game and throw the kitchen sink at us, but my question is: would rain still benefit them like it did last year, or would the roles likely be reversed?

I mean, I get they can just bring an extra guy into run support, but I figure stuff like zone read and stretch could be extra effective if their DE’s are slipping. Also we can just mash them with Mason.

10/12/2018 - 9:22am Agreed. All the offending…

Agreed. All the offending parties at the Freep are gone. All the people they were after at Michigan are gone too.

10/11/2018 - 12:09pm I’m still skeptical about…

I’m still skeptical about how they’d hold up against an elite DL, but are there any elite DLs left on our schedule?

Serious question. Obviously OSU has the talent but, Nick Bosa aside, they’ve been underwhelming—and Bosa is out anyway. Not clear when he’ll be back.

As for MSU, they’re great against the run but not against the pass.

10/10/2018 - 4:26pm NW beat MSU with 8 yards…

NW beat MSU with 8 yards rushing.

10/09/2018 - 11:31pm FEI is so weird. We score…

FEI is so weird. We score much better than MSU on every metric they collect and yet are ranked 4 spots lower...

10/08/2018 - 10:35am Totally agree. Also worth…

Totally agree. Also worth noting that being a Michigan grad doesn’t mean much. Michael Rosenberg was a Michigan grad.

Nick isn’t a troll, isn’t a hot take machine, and is actually very knowledgeable and insightful. Do I always agree with him? By no means. But he’s a huge upgrade for the Freep compared with the yokels they used to pay to cover the beat.

10/08/2018 - 9:22am I don't get the Baumgartner…

I don't get the Baumgartner hate. He isn't relentlessly negative in a cheap and thoughtless way, like Drew Sharp used to be. He's just critical. But this blog is also critical--often about the same things, and to the same degree. I don't think Baumgartner's views are far off from Brian's.

Anyway, I thought it was a good article. Love to see that we are able to add complexity, rather than be forced to reduce it.

10/07/2018 - 6:06pm I dunno, man. I just don’t…

I dunno, man. I just don’t think Patterson has the numbers for an early NFL exit. He’s good, sure, but the offense will bring back most people and so he’d likely benefit from another year in terms of draft placement. I feel like he’s coming back.

10/07/2018 - 1:23pm It would be interesting to…

It would be interesting to see our stats through 6 games last year

10/07/2018 - 12:57pm How do you know we won’t…

How do you know we won’t have them for the next 3 games?

Gary is likely back for Wisconsin and early word on Dwumfour suggests that it isn’t a long term injury. No word any which way on Kemp.

10/07/2018 - 12:16pm Passing spread offense.

Passing spread offense.

See also: good passing spread offense coupled with surprisingly not great defense, meaning they need more TDs than you’d think they’d need.

10/07/2018 - 12:14pm What he said has nothing to…

What he said has nothing to do with who wins our game. He’s talking about ethics and why people would want to play for a program with those priorities.

10/07/2018 - 11:50am What’s your rationale for…

What’s your rationale for stating that passer rating is superior to QBR? Aside from the fact that our guy does better in it, of course ;)

Comes up at a cool #9 in the conference

10/05/2018 - 9:13pm “Out-athlete” is not a verb.

“Out-athlete” is not a verb.

09/24/2018 - 10:38am Look, was our dominating…

Look, was our dominating performance at least partly attributable to Nebraska being bad? Yes absolutely.

But did our OL also show *basic competence* that it hasn’t shown, even against equal or worse opponents, since 2016? Also yes.

I don’t expect us to mash MSU or OSU into fine dust, but I don't expect us to get utterly *mashed* anymore either. I do think we are seeing real, tangible progress since that week one loss. Our OL is progressing nicely.

09/24/2018 - 9:23am Awesome, and Wisconsin runs…

Awesome, and Wisconsin runs a similar D, don't they. So that's good.

But--and here's a question for the OL specialists--how portable is this to, say, a quarters defense with 4 down linemen?

09/22/2018 - 4:53pm The OL is getting better and…

The OL is getting better and it’s not just the level of competition. NU night not be good but their front 4 aren’t worse than WMU’s or SMU’s. Our guys are playing smarter and more disciplined every week. They absolutely dominated the LoS—something we haven’t seen much of since the mid-00s. This is what we want—need—to see going forward.

Are we good enough to beat OSU on the road? Maybe, though still seems like a stretch to me. But are we good enough to beat any *other* team in the conference? I think we are.

Doesn’t mean we will, granted (I still think we’ll roll into Columbus 9-2, as I did preseason). But it certainly looks possible now, and it wasn’t that long ago that it simply did not.

09/21/2018 - 5:07pm No

No

09/20/2018 - 7:32pm Won’t change the fact that…

Won’t change the fact that they are the Big 10 favorites, but he’s their best defensive player by a mile. Like if we had lost Hurst last year.

Could seriously impact their postseason chances.

09/13/2018 - 9:20am Always a good read. I agree…

Always a good read. I agree on shotgun and spreading the field. I'd like to see more of that.

What the hell is wrong with you? He's a ****ing sophomore. Give the kid a break.

I just negged him for good measure.

Seeing as how we won a national championship 3 years later, I’d say it’s not worth speculating about.

09/08/2018 - 11:28am Better blocking from OL…

Better blocking from OL. Blitz pickups by RB, FB. Higdon and Evans back in the groove. A couple big plays in the passing game. Defensive dominance.

This just in...asshole is asshole.

09/03/2018 - 10:42am Preseason I predicted 9-3 (8…

Preseason I predicted 9-3 (8-2) with losses @ ND, vs Wisconsin and @ OSU. Still on track for that.

09/01/2018 - 10:43am They often start the season…

They often start the season a bit iffy and then pick it up in conference play. Something about how Dantonio coaches makes them relatively more vulnerable early than late. Was the same with Carr for most of his tenure.

That said, almost losing to a team that’s far overmatched on paper should be a bit worrisome to Sparty fans. I’ve long felt that their 2016 team underachieved and their 2017 team overachieved, and that the 2018 team would regress to the mean. Decent, and a tough opponent for us, but won’t be as highly ranked by the end of the year as they are now.

08/30/2018 - 9:32am Would any of you kinds folks…

Would any of you kinds folks be willing to edit my post so Nick Baumgardner's name is spelled correctly? I can't seem to figure out how to edit on the new site.

08/30/2018 - 9:31am *Baumgardner

08/29/2018 - 9:29am Maybe I just have PTSD from…

Maybe I just have PTSD from the past decade of football, but I'd put the floor somewhat lower than you, at 8 games barring injury problems and 7 games with the kind of luck we had last year.

...which isn't to say I *think* we will win 7-8 games during the regular season. I think we will win 9 games. Basically we will be a much better team with not much to show for it, thanks to our schedule. But I also don't think 10-2 is unimaginable by any stretch.

08/26/2018 - 12:03pm I like the idea, though I…

I like the idea, though I wish they weighted the various predictions based on past accuracy.

That said, most sites seem to have Michigan in the 9-11 range, which seems about right to me.

08/20/2018 - 10:32am I went over to Eleven…

I went over to the Eleven Warriors forum to get some inside information. What I learned is that someone named "Brett McExpletive" is at the center of a conspiracy against Ohio State University and its football program. It is possible that McExpletive has agents on the BoT and only this would explain anything less than a full exoneration. A dismissal couldn't possibly have anything to do with fostering a culture of impunity, ignoring domestic violence and then bringing further disrepute to the university by lying about it to the public, because reasons that certainly have nothing to do with winning football games.

08/10/2018 - 7:52pm Court appears to be the one…

Court appears to be the one responsible, but Durkin is in turn responsible for retaining him even after what appears to be clear evidence of a toxic situation.

If I were a Maryland alum, I'd want the AD to clean house. Nothing in football is worth an avoidable death, let alone retaining an asshole S&C coach.

08/05/2018 - 9:04pm Just a thought, but the…

Just a thought, but the board might benefit from dumping all the Meyer posts into a single "Urban Meyer Scandal Megathread."

Unless the blue is short for "Bluey."

08/05/2018 - 3:38am I think he goes. As much as…

I think he goes. As much as I hate their football program, I have nothing against the university as an institution of higher learning and research. And as a long-time academic, I guarantee you he will lose the faculty (if he hasn't already). The university is more important than its football program, which will survive this scandal anyway.

At some point, the trustees will realize that they will still pack the stadium with another coach.

08/04/2018 - 9:15pm Ignore the noise. Most…

Ignore the noise. Most placings are based on last year's results more than on roster analysis. If we beat ND, PSU, Wisconsin and MSU, we will be a top 5 team (at least). If we don't, we will be farther down the list. Where we are placed now doesn't really matter.

Our schedule is a challenge and an opportunity. I also don't think we come out of it unscathed, but you never know.

08/04/2018 - 9:12pm Ignore the troll account.

Ignore the troll account.

There are OSU fans we can have interesting conversations with (as I do when I post on 11w), but this is not that person.

08/03/2018 - 4:38am Not sure I've ever seen so…

Not sure I've ever seen so many spelling errors in my life, and I have a 6 year old kid.

08/02/2018 - 8:11am When it comes to something…

When it comes to something like domestic violence allegations, how they potentially affect Michigan football is really not very important.

08/01/2018 - 10:17pm For people saying X won't…

For people saying X won't take the job because X hates the spread, worth noting that Meyer's scheme isn't Chip Kelly's or RR's. The costs of transitioning to a more pro style offense would be lower, especially with Haskins at QB. There would still be costs, just lower costs. I mean, that OL can do power and IZ and they have two excellent RBs.
