I think Sam Webb made the good point that the NCAA wasn't going to want to touch the question of how much racism is enough to justify a penalty-free transfer. The easiest thing to do was just say that any amount was enough.

02/01/2019 - 1:23pm He had a double double…

He had a double double earlier this year too.  And he's played very good defense - at least at times.

01/31/2019 - 4:40pm Questions about minutes…

Questions about minutes aside, this would be exciting for Burke and Hardaway.  And I will be happy if I no longer have any reason to follow the Knicks.

We're all in the portal, man!  Expand your mind!

This seems like a major overreaction to a bad start of a season.

01/23/2019 - 10:08am He’s not poison. I don’t see…

He’s not poison. I don’t see why him simply being on the staff is bad.

01/22/2019 - 8:55pm I’ve spent a lot of time at…

I’ve spent a lot of time at home recently because of an illness. I’ve been so spaced out that I started watching NFL games from the ‘80s. The size and speed difference between those players and today’s players is striking.

My impression is that a lot (most?) of the players in the ‘80s didn’t do much weight training - if they did, it wasn’t very efficient. But I assume that PEDs play a role in the stark difference too.

Something else that stuck out to me while watching the old games was how brutal things were. Players were clearly concussed (“got his bell rung”) and then sent back to play. Headshots were just hard hits.

Combining today’s safer rules with yesterday’s player sizes might have a significant impact on player health. But I’m not optimistic about the size issue.

01/22/2019 - 8:48pm I love football, but I’m…

I love football, but I’m more and more conscious of how bad it is for the players when I watch. I wonder if we’ll reach a point where fans demand what the players’ union struggles to achieve - better compensation for active players and lifetime care for retirees.

Re: Gary, I think people are forgetting that he was constantly blocked by multiple blockers.  And he nonetheless set the edge.  He had a big impact on the game.  He just didn't put up huge stats.

01/17/2019 - 4:46pm Well, he sounds good.  Who…

Well, he sounds good.  Who knows whether that's a sign of anything, but it's a start.

My* two cents: get DPJ the ball in space as often as possible.

*Long-time blog members will recall that I have been the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers since 1937, when I was appointed to the position by President Roosevelt.

I’m with you and your daughter. He isn’t perfect, but I wouldn’t trade him for anyone.

01/09/2019 - 8:40pm Your point about OSU not…

Your point about OSU not having an MSU makes a lot of sense. And you are absolutely right as far as almost everyone in the state being a Buckeye (though Cincinnati is a bit of a holdout).

The difference I see can maybe best be described this way: U of M fans really want to watch the Wolverines win on Saturdays. But OSU fans would spend all week smoking Buckeye football if they could.

01/09/2019 - 7:21pm Do you think Michigan fans…

Do you think Michigan fans would want some or all of that? I don’t ask that as a rhetorical question. My perception is that (generally speaking) OSU fans are whole heartedly football mad in a way that Michigan fans are not. But I realize that I might be wrong.

01/09/2019 - 7:02pm Are they still going to play…

I’m good as long as they keep playing football.

I wonder if he'll look at joining Mike Locksley at Maryland.

All our coaches are belong to them?

Dogs and cats living together...mass hysteria!

I am pretty tired of these teams.

Prediction: Alabama wins 27-17. They’re stronger at QB. And Dexter Lawrence is out.

01/06/2019 - 8:53pm Wow - thanks for this.

Wow - thanks for this.

01/03/2019 - 1:12pm I just want an offense that…

I just want an offense that scores more points that Ohio State does  - in the Game, to be clear.

01/02/2019 - 8:34pm The process by which he was…

The process by which he was hired was probably less than an ideal of meritocracy. But the results have been fine.

01/02/2019 - 10:06am I agree. The simple answers…

I agree. The simple answers are to ditch the playoff and pay and/or heavily insure the players. But I don’t see any of that happening soon.

01/01/2019 - 2:32pm Harbaugh’s offenses were…

Harbaugh’s offenses were somewhat clunky in San Francisco. But his Stanford offense was something else. So to answer one of the questions Spath asks, this problem (if it’s real) probably isn’t all Harbaugh.

01/01/2019 - 1:34am You have to go all the way…

You have to go all the way back to Tulane, but Shaun King was a very good passer in college. Forcier looked to be on track to be a good passer too. You are generally correct, though, that his quarterbacks have been better runners than passers.

01/01/2019 - 1:08am I wish for RR’s sake that he…

I wish for RR’s sake that he never left West Virginia. I hope they hire him back.

12/31/2018 - 10:10pm I believe he’s thought of as…

I believe he’s thought of as a good recruiter. And it seems like he can’t be a bad linebacker coach, though I’m just going on the performance of Michigan’s linebackers. I think Washington to OSU would be perceived as a loss in AA, and not just because he’d be joining the Buckeyes.

12/30/2018 - 9:51pm I’ve become much less…

I’ve become much less intense as a fan over the past couple of years and also questioned why I bother at all. But the answer is simple: Michigan is my tribe. I’ve been rooting for the Wolverines with my mom (a U of M grad) for most of my life. And now I’ve been posting with you guys and gals for more than a decade. I would feel like I was abandoning my tribe if I left it behind all together. And I don’t want to be an abandoner!

Also, the Michigan Athletic Department sends me $100 for every “fuck” I say during a game.

12/30/2018 - 5:56pm This is very good! I was…

This is very good! I was worried about the secondary (and still am to some extent given that Long might leave).

12/29/2018 - 12:38am I hope Michigan scores so…

I hope Michigan scores so many points tomorrow that people say college football has to change its rules.

12/28/2018 - 3:31pm This is the sort of game…

This is the sort of game that makes me avoid the board.  People will shrug if we win but be angry and depressed if we lose.  My suggestion: let's be angry and depressed even if we win.

Seriously, though, I think winning a NY6 bowl and making it to eleven wins would be nice.  Let us endeavor to prevail.

12/21/2018 - 7:56pm There is something wrong…

There is something wrong with the passing game. I can’t tell on TV what it is, though. Either Patterson is too reluctant to throw at times or the receivers aren’t getting open - or both. I wonder about the passing scheme.

12/19/2018 - 1:00pm Good luck against everyone…

Good luck against everyone but Michigan, young man.

12/18/2018 - 10:59am Good for him. He and his mom…

Good for him. He and his mom always seemed like great representatives of the program. I hope he has all the success in the world.

12/18/2018 - 10:47am This seems to be one of…

This seems to be one of those rare recruitments where a single game flipped the outcome. And that’s fair enough when you give up 62 points in the biggest game you’ve played in a couple of years.

12/17/2018 - 4:16pm Re: something being wrong,…

Re: something being wrong, is that based on more than the news of the transfers? To be clear, I don't ask that as a rhetorical question. I know that you worked for the program in the past.

12/17/2018 - 3:51pm Stop, children.

Stop, children.

12/17/2018 - 3:48pm D'oh!

D'oh!

12/15/2018 - 4:22pm This is one of the many…

This is one of the many reasons I don’t like the playoff. The other bowls no don’t count - as was inevitable.

I can’t say I’ll be watching this game.

I’m not going to wet my pants in sadness until he actually picks another school. Well, I’m not going to wet my pants in sadness because of this recruitment until he actually picks another school.

12/12/2018 - 10:18am Boo.

Boo.

12/11/2018 - 10:34pm I strongly believe that he…

I strongly believe that he will play football somewhere.

12/05/2018 - 1:26pm My suggestion: expel Penn…

My suggestion: expel Penn State, Rutgers, Nebraska, and Maryland from the conference.  Then decide the champion as we did before those teams entered the Big Ten.

12/05/2018 - 1:24pm I absolutely do not want a…

I absolutely do not want a structure that would allow Michigan and Ohio State to play in back-to-back weeks (and, yes, I realize we had this with "Leaders" and "Legends").  It would cheapen the Game.  And, as would have happened this year, it would lead to a season in which one or both of the teams knew going into the Game that they were slotted for a championship game rematch.  Do you rest your players in the Game when you know there is a rematch a week later?  I assume not, but I don't even want that kind of thing on the table.

12/04/2018 - 11:50am Good point.  The buyout…

Good point.  The buyout clause may make what I said largely irrelevant.

12/04/2018 - 11:48am Wow, that's a lot of…

Wow, that's a lot of confidence in the guy if true.  I understand that he's considered a coach with a bright future, but that seems like an unnecessarily long contract.

12/03/2018 - 5:09pm The question of who the…

The question of who the national champion is just doesn't interest me that much if Michigan isn't involved.  Even then, beating OSU and winning the Big Ten is more important.  The national championship is inherently somewhat absurd.

12/03/2018 - 2:18pm As trite as it may sound, I…

As trite as it may sound, I can't come up with a better description of Coach Beilien's program than to say that his teams are a joy to watch.  It's nice to recruit players who are outstanding from the get-go (future Chris Webbers are welcome).  But it's even more fun to see players blossom year after year.  At this point, I'm wiling to go out on a limb and say that John Beilein is a pretty decent basketball coach and that Michigan should keep him.

You are a trusted friend and agent, WH. As a fellow believer in jinxes, I thank you.

Deep thought: I like the way Michigan blows everyone out.
