02/15/2019 - 6:02pm Neither Kaepernick nor Mark…

Neither Kaepernick nor Mark Sanchez had played since 2016, but when Washington needed a QB in a hurry after Alex Smith went down and career backup Colt McCoy didn't work out they went with Sanchez.

Even though Sanchez was older, not as good an athlete and frankly had played much worse in 2016 than Kaepernick had. Kaepernick had played for a horrible, mismanaged 2-14 49ers team in 2016 but had still managed a 59.2% completion percentage and 16 touchdowns against 4 interceptions in 11 starts while Sanchez had no touchdowns and 2 interceptions as a backup on a 13-3 Dallas team.

To no one's surprise, Sanchez turned out to be awful and was benched partway through his only start. He never managed to throw a touchdown but did throw three interceptions.

Are you telling me that Kaepernick would have done worse than Mark Sanchez?

This is also a league where Nathan Peterman started not one but two games. Two. He might not even have been the worst quarterback to start for Buffalo, since he did manage a touchdown pass and Derek Anderson didn't.

02/15/2019 - 2:21pm I went to the divisional…

I went to the divisional playoff against the Oakland Invaders in Detroit--I was in high school at the time and it was a home game.

With those two wins, the Michigan Panthers in the span of eight days have had more playoff wins than the Detroit Lions have had for my entire life.

It'd sound something like this.

02/12/2019 - 8:55pm They're still around. I don…

They're still around. I don't think they make the national news as much as they used to. I also suspect that at least some serial killers are much better at avoiding leaving forensic evidence nowadays.

I'm now in Toronto, where Bruce Mcarthur was just sentenced to life in prison for 8 murders. It's a bit controversial, since he'll be eligible for parole in 25 years (when he'll be 92).

Some other examples from skimming through Wikipedia: Anthony Sowell was convicted in Cleveland of 11 murders in 2011, James Dale Ritchie killed five people in Anchorage and was killed himself in a shootout by cops in 2016, and Todd Kohlhepp plead guilty to 7 murders in 2017. The only one of those I remember hearing about was Kohlhepp.

02/09/2019 - 8:38pm There aren't nearly enough…

There aren't nearly enough decent commentators to cover the NFL and college football.

02/09/2019 - 4:44pm They could be winning 83-47 …

They could be winning 83-47 (basketball) or 59-0 (football) and the game thread would still be ridiculously negative. I stopped reading them long ago.

02/07/2019 - 4:06pm If you read the Slate…

If you read the Slate article that EDSBS links to (here), California actually used this for a couple of decades. John Elway's high school team won a playoff game using this overtime system against future NFL starter Jay Schroeder's high school team.

02/06/2019 - 12:14pm If you just look at his Ball…

If you just look at his Ball State tenure, he likely wouldn't have been hired at a P5 school.

If you look at his San Diego State tenure in addition to that, though, it looks a lot better. San Diego State had been 2-10 the year before he was hired, 4-8 and 3-9 the year before that. In his second year at SDSU they were in a bowl game at 9-4. SDSU hadn't been to a bowl game in over a decade.

In retrospect Rocky Long was probably the big factor there, but Hoke likely would had P5 schools interviewing him, and I strongly suspect he would have gotten a job with one of them.

02/06/2019 - 9:24am I think #1 Pitt or #2 USC…

I think #1 Pitt or #2 USC could have beaten Tampa Bay in 1976. That was the first expansion year, and even after the Lions and the Browns broke their winless record they're still widely regarded as one of the worst NFL teams of all team.

02/04/2019 - 8:50am Archie Griffin was a…

Archie Griffin was a disappointment as a pro. Arguably he was a bust; he was a first round draft pick and was a replacement-level running back in the pros. The leading rusher on most of the Bengals teams Griffin played on was Pete Johnson. Johnson was the fullback (and had played at Ohio State with Griffin).

Griffin still had a better professional career than Cook will.

Read the wikipedia article (here). At a minimum the Lion King borrowed heavily from Kimba.

02/03/2019 - 11:01am Kimba was made in Japan in…

Kimba was made in Japan in the fifties and broadcast in the US starting in the sixties; I forget whether it was on channel 20 or channel 50 in Detroit.

The Lion King was released in 1994.

You mean Disney's blatant rip-off of Kimba the White Lion

02/02/2019 - 9:45pm And this, my friends, is why…

And this, my friends, is why we have the "what are you drinking" threads.

Because OP here is clearly drunk, and we'd all be better off if they were talking about how they got that way.

01/31/2019 - 8:49pm That's not entirely true. Or…

That's not entirely true. Or have you forgotten the immortal Jareth Glanda, who caught an 11-yard Drew Dileo pass on a fake field goal in the 2012 Sugar Bowl?

But yeah, the odds are low.

01/31/2019 - 9:40am I think they were aiming for…

I think they were aiming for this.

(Watch me screw it up now.)

01/29/2019 - 3:36pm I'd be curious as to how…

I'd be curious as to how many sons of elite NFL athletes have elite football talent. I can think of guys like Christian McCaffrey and Peyton and Eli Manning who do, and Dylan McCaffrey might. I can also think of guys like Barry J. Sanders and Deion Jr. who didn't have much of a career at the college level.

Just to note, I said elite athletic talent, so don't give me any shit about Eli Manning. He's been a genuine starter in the NFL for over a decade, which makes him an elite talent regardless of the fact that he's no Hall of Famer. So defining "elite" might prove to be a problem; it'd be a lot easier to go with something like "multi-year starter" or something like that.

01/28/2019 - 5:45pm 9-year-old me would do shit…

9-year-old me would do shit like that.

I assume this guy wasn't 9, though.

01/27/2019 - 3:46pm It's an older rule that they…

It's an older rule that they've apparently done away with now. The Slate article has a story about John Elway winning a high school game against Jay Schroeder.

01/27/2019 - 10:36am Clearly it's VraiMo.

Clearly it's VraiMo.

01/25/2019 - 9:50pm We could be leading 90-10…

We could be leading 90-10 against a highly ranked team and the pessimism in the game thread would be unbearable.

01/25/2019 - 3:06pm I'm not entirely sure I buy…

I'm not entirely sure I buy that. We took I-75 for a couple of hours and smaller roads for the rest of the trip. Florida is also a relatively small portion of the trip.

Also, does I-90 go anywhere near Georgia or Florida? I thought it ended on the east coast somewhere north of the Mason-Dixon line.

01/25/2019 - 1:50pm Ohio has also long been…

Ohio has also long been notorious for speed traps. My mother-in-law is south of Columbus so believe me I know.

The worst I have ever seen, though, was about 15 years ago when my wife and I flew into Atlanta the weekend after Thanksgiving and rented a car to drive to Tallahassee for a wedding. We saw 15+ cars pulled over before we got out of Georgia and another 10+ in Florida.

01/23/2019 - 6:47pm Oh come on. If their running…

Oh come on. If their running backs are playing well and nobody else is, Brian Kelly is going to go full Code Purple.

I like your positive outlook.

Now you'll have to excuse me. There's a case of wine I need to drink.

01/23/2019 - 3:42pm Gary Moeller was a co…

Gary Moeller was a co-captain at Ohio State in the sixties. For that matter, Bo was an assistant to Woody Hayes.

Good luck to Mike Hart. I hope his is the only unit that plays well against Michigan next year.

01/23/2019 - 1:52pm They've also been by nearly…

They've also been by nearly any objective standard one of the eight-best teams in the country for nearly the entire time Saban has been there. I had more of a concern when they were getting into the two-team BCS championship when they didn't win their conference (i.e., 2011 when they beat LSU in a rematch).

It's hardly unfair if one of the best eight teams in the country every year gets into an eight-team playoff.

01/22/2019 - 9:50am The other side to that…

The other side to that discussing rumors about players is like tweeting at recruits: it can be counterproductive and downright stupid. Do you really want to risk pissing off players who are already considering transferring?

I'd suggest the policy to require some kind of official news is good. If his name was in the transfer portal, then we can discuss it. If his name isn't, it's stupid and pointless and potentially just plain bad.

Trivia: Tom Brady is the only Michigan QB to have started a Super Bowl, but Elvis Grbac played in one and threw a pass (incomplete).

What's a typo here and there? If they're a Saints fan I assume they're still drunk.

01/21/2019 - 9:36am It's interesting to see the…

It's interesting to see the mix of reactions to his retirement. I see it pretty much as you do, but I haven't lived in the Detroit area for thirty years and for the last fifteen have really only come back for funerals. In recent years I only read him when somebody over here linked to one of his columns.

I do hope he enjoys retirement.

01/21/2019 - 9:29am I'd forgotten about that.

I'd forgotten about that.

He  may know what scouts are saying, but are the scouts telling him bullshit? You'd think that would be pretty common--don't want to tip people off to who you're going to draft if you can help it.

01/17/2019 - 10:52am Nick "Control Freak" Saban…

Nick "Control Freak" Saban allowing donors to decide on coaching hires? I'm skeptical.

I think the Kiffin-type hires come because Nick feels that if he can keep them under control he's getting a bargain.

01/15/2019 - 3:37pm Pssst! Bo did start freshman…

Pssst! Bo did start freshman, Rick Leach and Rich Hewlett, at quarterback in the seventies. It was only one game for Hewlett, but Leach started all but one game.

Having said that, I largely agree with what you said. If Dylan is playing significantly better than Shea, Dylan should start. I would be surprised if that were the case, though; most likely Shea will start.

01/14/2019 - 12:02pm From the article:

From the article:

“Bed bugs are the number one urban pest in many cities today,” said Chelle Hartzer, an Orkin entomologist. “They are master hitchhikers, so no one is immune. Sanitation has nothing to do with prevention: from public transit to five-star resorts, bed bugs have been and can be found everywhere humans are.”

Congratulations! I hope they have your avatar's glorious hair.

01/11/2019 - 6:41pm It looks like "James Yoder"…

It looks like "James Yoder" AKA "Ace Williams" is the "brains" behind Chat Sports. Brian has complained about both Chat Sports and "Ace Williams" for a few years now.

So it's a troll with a web site.

The OSU *and* Florida fan reaction would be glorious.

01/10/2019 - 6:46pm So did Kevin Spacey.

So did Kevin Spacey.

01/10/2019 - 1:47pm He's probably still pissed…

He's probably still pissed that the Tigers traded John Smoltz away when he was in the minors. (Insert hindsight is 20/20 here.)

01/10/2019 - 1:40pm Jim Young and Bill McCartney…

Jim Young and Bill McCartney.

Both of these guys were former defensive coordinators at Michigan under Bo who later coached at schools that beat Michigan at one point or another (Purdue and Colorado, respectively).

(As an aside, I never realized that Dave McClain [late Wisconsin football coach and assistant] and John Mackovic [former Texas and Illinois coach] were in the Schembechler coaching tree. McClain were both at Miami while Bo was head coach there in the sixties.)

01/10/2019 - 9:04am I'd like to blame at least a…

I'd like to blame at least a small part of it on the Big Ten's decision not to allow any team besides the champion to play in a bowl game. This mean that in Bo's first six seasons, four of his teams (with records of 9-1, 10-1, 10-0-1 and 10-1) all stayed home.

While there are no guarantees, playing more bowl games over that period would have allowed him to learn how to prepare for the damn things a bit sooner than he actually did. Bo's record in bowl games was .500 after the seventies, and he had made changes in how he prepared the team by then.

I'll add that he might have had the opportunity to play in a few more bowl games with over-matched opponents, which might have helped him win a few. (Admittedly, it didn't help against Stanford and Washington in the Rose Bowl in the seventies, but a man can dream, can't he?)

01/08/2019 - 7:09pm Maryland was such a dumpster…

Maryland was such a dumpster fire last year that I wouldn't place a lot of weight on what anybody did there last year--in pure football terms, anyway.

Morally is another story.

01/08/2019 - 10:05am It's not hard to be a…

It's not hard to be a motivator when you're playing for a national title.

01/08/2019 - 8:59am Exactly. Why would Hoke come…

Exactly. Why would Hoke come back to work for the guy who replaced him, and why would Harbaugh hire him? From Hoke's perspective it's far too likely to be uncomfortable or humiliating, and from Harbaugh's perspective it's far too likely to be a disaster.

This is like those "Tom Brady should come back and be our coach" threads we see every now and then. Tom Brady has shown no aptitude for or interest in coaching. It's pure wish fulfillment.

01/07/2019 - 9:13pm Brimley, have you looked in…

Brimley, have you looked in a mirror lately? You're in your eighties, buddy.

01/07/2019 - 3:39pm How much of that is just…

How much of that is just that it's pretty damn difficult to be a quarterback in the NFL? I'm thinking of Jeff Tedford, who coached a lot of guys who wound up getting drafted but ended up struggling or in the NFL: Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington and Kyle Boller.

But he also coached potential Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers.
