Them beating Maryland would have actually been nice...Maryland is 7-1 in conference, would have given us a cushion if we lose tomorrow.
Maryland is @MSU on Monday.
|01/16/2019 - 12:54am||OSU's scholarship QBs next…||
OSU's scholarship QBs next year are now Fields, RS Fr Matthew Baldwin and RS Sr Chris Chugunov.
Chugunov started his career at WVU and played in 10 games where he was pretty mediocre/bad. He grad transferred to OSU last year with 2 years left and didn't play.
Baldwin was a borderline 3/4 star QB out of Texas. His best offers out of HS besides OSU were Iowa or Kentucky. Baldwin redshirted last year after tearing his ACL his senior year of HS.
If Fields doesn't get his waiver, gets hurt, or just isn't good OSU is in a real bad spot QB depth wise.

Starting lineup for NW according to UMHoop's Dylan Burkhardt:
"Northwestern’s posted starting lineup: Ryan Greer, Anthony Gaines, Ryan Taylor, AJ Turner and Pete Nance"
No Dererk Pardon. Maybe they're weirdly trying to go small with no Law? But if Pardon is also out then this should be a bloodbath.
Edit: Apparently he is starting. Just a mistake on the scoreboard.
|01/12/2019 - 5:18pm||Overachieving: MD is a good…||
Overachieving: MD is a good choice, otherwise I'd go Minnesota. I don't think anyone saw them going 13-3 with wins vs Nebraska and at Wisconsin.
Underachieving: PSU. Nebraska is also a decent choice, but PSU and Illinois are the only winless/under .500 B1G teams. That's expected for Illinois but not PSU. They weren't going to be as good as the NIT team last year without Carr, but Watkins/Stevens/Reaves is a good enough core to compete, not be 0-5.
Collapse: MD has to be the choice. Currently 5-1 but their next 3 games are vs Wisky, @OSU and @MSU. In February they have @Wisky, @Nebraska, vs Purdue, @Michigan, @Iowa, vs OSU and @PSU. That's going to bring them back to earth real quick.
On a run: Record wise Iowa could do good for themselves. Up to 3-3 now, have games against Illinois, PSU and Minnesota coming up this month.

Well you're probably the only person you thought that. The trajectory of the ball didn't change whatsoever when it passed White and all the other angles minus the overhead clearly showed it didn't touch him. Being mad they overturned that is being mad because it's Duke. If that were Michigan and they didn't overturn it, like you are asking, you would have made a similar thread here talking about how the refs are rigging the game against Michigan. It was the right call.

The ball was clearly off FSU and they only put .2 back on the clock. FSU was getting the whistle all game, not Duke.

First half turnovers were bad, 2 point defense is still a concern, and Poole played his worst game since November. Still won by the KenPom margin, double digits on the road.
Weird shooting night too. We made 5 3's, 2 by Simpson and 1 by Teske. We went 18-22 from the line, 8-10 by those two and Matthews. Needed it all tonight too.

Honestly not that upset. He was only here for a year. He had never been a LB coach before so not sure how big his effect on the defense/LB was. He's a great recruiter but OSU will recruit no matter what (and they lost Meyer/Schiano two of their best recruiters) and now they have 3 coaches on defense that are basically DL coaches, which seems like overkill.
I just don't get how OSU saw our game against them and thought "gimme some of that please." It sucks to lose coaches to OSU, but I don't think Washington or Mattison were that integral of pieces or irreplaceable. Hopefully this just serves as an opportunity to infuse some new blood and good football minds onto the staff to fix the issues we saw at the end of the year.
|01/07/2019 - 9:38am||We lost our last game last…||
We lost our last game last year in case you don't remember, so our win streak is 15.
Every team that didn't win a post season tourney (so everyone minus Nova, Penn St. and a few others) lost their last game of the season.
However there are 3 undefeated teams currently. Us, Virginia and Houston. UVA and UH both lost in the tournament last year, in memorable fashion, so their win streaks are the same as their records which is 13 for UVA, 15 for Houston. So us and Houston have the longest win streaks, and then next is Virginia or any 1/2 loss team that lost early in the season and has won 13+ in a row since.

Yeah gotta root for OSU here. Best chance to win the B1G involves most home teams holding serve in games between contenders. Root for home teams in those games early on, always root for underdogs (Rutgers, Illinois, NW, PSU) and root for Michigan obviously.

|12/29/2018 - 10:52am||Your complaint is the…||
Your complaint is the offense didn't score every drive while ignoring the fact that the defense had literally 3 stops all game. If you want to be dense, there's no point in talking.

Cool, we've gotten to the point where you've started dismissing well accepted advanced stats as ridiculous because they don't fit your narrative. Solid argument.
|12/29/2018 - 9:28am||Ask S&P+, but my guess is we…||
Ask S&P+, but my guess is we had an incredibly efficient passing attack but didn't pass enough. But lemme guess, us not passing enough is Pep's fault and not Harbaugh, because everything with the offense is Pep's fault and never goes back to Harbaugh, who architects the offense.
|12/29/2018 - 9:24am||We scored a TD at the start…||
We scored a TD at the start of the 4th to go down 41-25. If the D gets a stop instead of giving up a TD on the first play when we score a TD on the next drive, which we did, it's either an 8 or 10 point game with 10 minutes left in the 4th. But yeah, definitely out of reach.
|12/29/2018 - 1:29am||Sure the offense not moving…||
Sure the offense not moving the ball against OSU didn't help. Just like the D giving up 21 first half points on 4 drives, including TDs on the first 2 drives, to a Brandon Wimbush led (and Dexter Williams-less) ND didn't help. But lets ignore that right?
The offense lost ND, the defense lost OSU. The defense got 3 stops all game against OSU. Only 3 drives all game did OSU not score. 1 was in the second half, the other two were first half drives were OSU shot itself in the foot with penalties. The D lost OSU, full stop.
At least try to be objective.
|12/29/2018 - 1:19am||The offense was top 25 to S…||
The offense was top 25 to S&P+ and a top 10 passing attack. We put up 38 on Wisconsin, 39 on OSU and 42 against PSU. The offense was better than good for the majority of the year.

|12/23/2018 - 10:15am||I've been meaning to make a…||
I've been meaning to make a post about this but I don't think they actually return 19 starters. If you go to this depth chart from Ourlads it says 19 returning starters, but if you go to their official depth chart there's a lot more seniors listed. I think Army does the same thing as us and doesn't list redshirts so it messes up depth charts in that sense.
For example, DT Raymond Wright for Army is listed as a junior on Ourlads and senior on the official depth chart. According to his Army bio he's played in at least 5 games in 4 seasons, so I don't know how he'd be a junior. Maybe I'm missing something with service academies or medical redshirts but it seems like he's clear cut done now.
I can find another 4 guys who fit the same criteria, all on defense, just with a quick look at Army's depth chart. I also know that their starting QB last year didn't officially graduate and leave the team until this past August and could have petitioned to play if they really wanted last year. So while they return a lot, it probably won't be 19 starters a lot.
|12/23/2018 - 12:28am||They were down 40-19 in the…||
They were down 40-19 in the 4th, and despite running a slow offense still put up another 20 points. Maybe be mad at the defense that couldn't have stopped a wet paper bag.
|12/22/2018 - 10:55pm||Did any sober person besides…||
Did any sober person besides Fisch think that OL could get protection for Speight against that DL?
|12/22/2018 - 10:54pm||I pretty much agree. I don't…||
I pretty much agree. I don't think Pep is nearly as bad as this board makes him out to be, or that Fisch is nearly as good as people here think. But in the end, this is Harbaugh's offense and what we see on the field is a product of what he wants done. No major changes will be made unless Harbaugh wants them to be made, the OC is just an extension of Harbaugh.
That being said, the Pep takes here are so weird to me. Yes, there are valid criticisms of Pep and the offense. The play calling was vanilla, bland and predictable at times leading to a frustratingly ineffective offense at times (the OSU game plan of Higdon run up the middle on 1st and 2nd for 1 yard each series is the pinnacle of this). We struggled to convert yards to points often with a lot of drives stalling out on the opposing side of the field or in the red zone. We lost the ND game because of the offense. The offense isn't perfect and there's many improvements to be made.
That being said we were still the 24th ranked offense to S&P+ and had the #10 passing attack. Those numbers are both higher than anything Jedd produced (best of 38th and 17th in 2015), and almost all of this offense is returning next year. It was an offense with 2 new OL, an entirely green and unproven WR corps, and a new QB in his first year in this offense and first year at Michigan and the offense was better than anything we got from Jedd.
Obviously this offense has more talent than Jedd had available, but it also had a lot less experience. In 2016 despite returning the entire 2015 offense minus Rudock, the overall and passing S&P+ numbers dropped. So despite having 4/5 linemen back, Chesson/Darboh/Perry/Butt as pas catchers and Smith/Isaac/Higdon/Evans at RB, the offense got worse. Speight played really well in a 3 game stretch against Illinois (87th S&P+ pass defense in 2016), MSU (120) and Maryland (80th) but was mediocre at best the rest of the year.
People are all on the fire Pep train after OSU (a game our defense lost us, not the offense). But once he had some experienced players, a real QB and a semi-functional OL, Pep's offense took a huge step forward. Why wouldn't you let him stick around with the entire same group of guys? Now that this offense and Pep all have experience together, you'd expect some issues to be ironed out and the offense to jump from top 25, where it is now, to higher. Maybe it doesn't, and maybe it regresses and you have to fire Pep. But if it doesn't I think the issues we have are changes Harbaugh has to make, not the OC, and there's no reason to think firing Pep and bringing in Jedd will make anything better except to calm down angry internet fans.
|12/22/2018 - 10:13pm||Funny considering he threw 2…||
Funny considering he threw 2 all game and the first 2 drives were a FG and TD pass by Speight.
There are valid criticisms of the offense and Pep. But he is without a doubt this fanbase's scape goat. The idea that if he were gone and Fisch were back the offense would be "fixed" is delusional.
|12/22/2018 - 9:46pm||You don't think losing our…||
You don't think losing our entire receiving corps, the majority of the OL, and having one of the worst pass blocking OL in country had anything to do with that?

Yeah. Games in Tempe, ASU beat Kansas last year, and Kansas hasn't looked dominant in most games. Kansas will be the favorite but it wouldn't be shocking to see ASU win.

|12/19/2018 - 6:35pm||Why wouldn't Charbonnet be…||
Why wouldn't Charbonnet be ready? Evans managed to play as a freshman. Charbonnet is enrolling early so he'll have plenty of time to learn the offense and grow as a player. Even if Harbaugh's offense is "complex", this isn't a PG running Beilein's offense. Even if he doesn't know every nuance, RB is a make plays position. If he can make plays, he'll play. He may not be the best at pass blocking, route running, have the best vision, etc. But if he can make plays, which by all accounts he can, he'll play. Especially when we still have Evans, Wilson and Turner at RB.
Edit: Also if ZC is as good as advertised, especially at RB, you probably don't get 5 years from him so why waste a year redshirting him?
