Barner was sort of awesome this year.  It felt like he was as good as or better than Colston Loveland impact wise and people (on here) think Loveland is a future first rounder.

Universal credits and/or…

Universal credits and/or universally recognized skills are something that needs to happen even outside of athletics.  Once you are enrolled, colleges are essentially monopolies.  Sure you can transfer, but it is going to cost you a semester or more which is a big hurdle when you're paying $50-$75k a year.  With online learning and MOOCs, college costs should be dropping like a stone, but they keep going up because administrators are building empires, predatory lending companies have made more funds available or whatever pet theory floats your boat.

Universal credits make institutions compete for dollars. Why pay $15k for calculus I when you could take it online from the same professor for $50/month?

I wrote for the Michigan…

I wrote for the Michigan Daily Sports section for a semester and at the time most of the guys didn't seem to have been athletes.  They were the guys who ran the stats at the basketball game who played little league but not beyond.  They all knew 1,000 times more about sports than I did including the sports I played.

I heard him speak when he…

I heard him speak when he was the AD at the University at Buffalo.  He was wearing a very nice sport coat and gray slacks. He looked sharp that day.

I wish Frankie the best as…

I wish Frankie the best as well. The article makes it sound like he was wanted at ASU.  Assuming he's not going to make it to the NBA, testing the NIL/transfer waters is probably a smart move.  It just gets a little ridiculous to be on your 7th school in [8] years.  I get basketball is a business, but you can't be getting a great education or making life long friends if you're making huge moves every year.

My first thought was WTF is…

My first thought was WTF is Warde wearing.  It's like a blazer/moo moo.  He either lost a lot of weight or is planning on gaining a lot of weight.

Not just working a retail…

Not just working a retail/service job but having to work a retail/service job. Trading places was a great version of the Prince and the Pauper because Dan Akyrod quickly devolved.  It is the lack of resources/desperation that make those jobs/situations suck more than the work itself. (IMHO)

The NBA is doing itself a…

The NBA is doing itself a disservice with the one and done policy.  I don't watch the NBA unless the Pistons are in the playoffs, or having a very good year, but I've watched a few hours over the years when I saw Trey Burke, Caris LaVert, Duncan Robinson or Franz in a game. But I'd have a hard time telling you what Houstan, Diabate or Jett even look like.  I have to google Diabate's name everytime I mention him.  Hell, in the 90s I once watched half a Dallas Maverick's game with a friend because Jim Jackson from OSU was in it.

...and if you follow the Pistons, those 1 and done guys sort of suck for a long time.

Duke seems to do o.k. with those players but Callipari has proven that it is hard to utilize that kind of talent.  The whole is less than the sum of the parts.

It is nice to see your players go far in the NBA, but I'd rather Michigan win.  I hope May puts together winning teams who stick around.  If you can get a 1&D here and there you sort of have to take them, but they shouldn't be the primary targets.

He thinks they’re crazy….

I don't know.  Maybe ask him…

I don't know.  Maybe ask him and/or some of his friends if he is drinking on a regular basis.  Most people never get a DUI.  If you have one, it is a red flag and is something that should be evaluated.   I don't expect anything to come up on a Shemmy Schembechler style background check, but a month plus one seems like it would be pretty thorough.  Maybe buy the guy a Lyft or Uber gift card at orientation.

As an aside, how do you take…

As an aside, how do you take a month plus doing a background check on a guy and then have him immediately get a DWI/DUI?   At least Scruggs didn't have any Nazi tweets or whatever it was.

Filthy July?  Too far?

Filthy July?  Too far?

Yeah I thought we were… Yeah I thought we were conceding this guy to Louisville. Warde gets a +1.
Michigan needs to put DE…

Michigan needs to put DE everywhere.  He should have a [1000/1000]season rushing and receiving, or something ridiculous.  1600/1600 and we go back to back?

Go Sean Bormet!  Go Blue!

Go Sean Bormet!  Go Blue!

PSU has been dominating for 10-12 years.  They’ve got to be competitive or better than Gable’s Iowa dynasty.

Unfounded Reddit rumor is…

Unfounded Reddit rumor is that Judkins would threaten to hold out of games at Ole Miss unless he got more money.  I'm hoping it is true and that he further poisons the OSU locker room. The reported reason for his departure was NIL, so the rumor seems plausible.

Defense wins championships!

Defense wins championships!

Blue in Paradise is right…

Blue in Paradise is right that Day needed a fall guy.  The other answer is that they thought they were going to get Cam Ward who would have been an upgrade.  My recollection of events.

1. OSU loses to Michigan.  Eleven Warriors and OSU reddit start talking about how they are going to get Cam Ward and that they are talking to him.

2. EW and r/OSU buzz that it is a battle between Miami and OSU.

3. Cam Ward enters the portal.  (Yes.  OSU and Miami were tampering if the rumors were true.)

4. Ryan Day tells Kyle McCord that he's going to have to compete to win the job next year.

5.  McCord leaves not because he is worried about Brown, Keinholz or Norland but because he's not going to beat out Cam Ward, or get the NIL money Cam Ward would gobble up.

(OSU loses to Missouri with Devin Brown at QB)

6. Cam Ward declares for the draft (!)

7. Day brings in Will Howard as a backup plan. EW and r/OSU are excited but MGoBlog thinks he's a lateral move from McCord.    Brown and Keinholz are idiots for staying at OSU.

8.  Cam Ward exits NFL draft and goes to Miami who has been bidding (and winning) against OSU for multiple players.  Ha! Ha!

9.  Julian Sayin transfers to OSU.  Brown and Keinholz remain idiots for staying at OSU.

I'm guessing at least two QBs leave OSU after spring ball.

He's back!

He's back!

Great Song.  For those that don’t know it is a pretty old song.  Johnny Burnett and the Rock n Roll trio did the original in like 49 or 50.  A History of Rock n Roll in 500 Songs covers it in episode 44.   One of the Burnet brothers fought Sonny Liston.

love the Aerosmith version and thought the history was neat.

Grant had an interception against Nebraska.  I swear I remember him have an INT and returning it for 10-15 yards.

Long story short anything could happen.

The amount of venom from the…

The amount of venom from the fanbase was too much.  The last couple of years were a disaster, but the guy had open heart surgery this year and he had some really bad roster management that wasn't entirely his fault.

Houstan and Diabate should have stayed 2 and 3 years respectively.  Sure he probably should have known that the NBA takes players with the right potential regardless of development or production, but the last couple of years would have looked much different with them around.  Jett was the same thing though you would have thought Juwan would have had more influence.  Not everyone can be a Jalen, Juwan, Weber and have a huge impact their freshman year.

Terrance Shannon, Caleb Love and the Argentinian guy would have made some difference.

Dickenson--I didn't really follow why Dickenson left other than NIL.  Howard probably should have figured out how to keep him.

Can you imagine how different the team would be with 3 or 4 of those seven guys?

As for the anger management, I don't know what to say.  If we were winning it would be brushed aside a bit more, but the combination was his death knell.

I hope Howard takes a year off to recuperate  and then lands an NBA assistant job somewhere.

Reddit thread on this…

Reddit thread on this discusses all of the mercs.  I guess Caleb Downs was on the same spring break trip as Proctor who is going back to Bama.

A reddit poster said that Lane Kiffin made "zero effort" to keep Judkins because Judkins allegedly threatened to hold himself out of games unless he got paid more.  You have to take it all with a grain of salt, but the hope is that the merc culture breeds Texas A&M sized disappointment for OSU.

As far as Proctor goes it is reasonable that he didn't vibe with his new teammates and the spring break trip made him miss his friends from Alabama.

He could blow up this year…

He could blow up this year and be a first rounder, but most years there are very few RBs in the first round so the odds are against him. I'm not sure where that trope came from, but the last 10 years there have been ~1.4 RBs per year which is about right when you consider there are 22 positions and 32 teams (~1.45)  2013 and 2014 brings down the average though.  Only thing I can figure out is that the 2012 backs sucked so much that no one wanted to get burnt the next couple of years.  NFL also became a passing league.  Here are the stats for every first round back taken since 2000.

reason #1 why Saban is…

reason #1 why Saban is retiring.  Coaching football is a lot easier if you have 3 deep first round picks at every position.

2017 Tide:  (40 players drafted over multiple years)

QB:  Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Mac Jones (3 NFL starting QBs)

RB:  Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris, Damien Harris.  (Derrick Henry had just left)

WR: Calvin Ridley, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Henry Ruggs III.

OL: Jonah Williams, Jerick Wills and Alex Leatherwood.

Michigan had a ridiculous amount of talent this year and had top talent in the 70s,80s,90s, but most years we've had a fraction of what Bama and Georgia have had.   Harbaugh figured it out the last couple of years.  I'm hoping Michigan can continue to thrive.

Friend stayed in a pretty…

Friend stayed in a pretty slick hipster pad in downtown Detroit over the holidays.  Looked pretty fantastic.   Can't find the listing. Be sure to go to the DIA and Third Man Records while you're there.

Here's the thing I don't get…

Here's the thing I don't get.  Most college football teams have serviceable QBs. Yes QB is the most important player on the field and yes, we need a QB that can beat OSU, but we should be able to put someone out there who isn't a complete liability.  I don't understand how we had so many years with either a bad QB or a suspect O-line or both.

Our O-line should be very good this year with a lot of guys who have been on campus for a few years.  Pre-spring ball I have a lot of warm fuzzies for the potential of Tuttle, Denegal, Orji, Davis Warren and even Jayden Davis. Most of those guys have been here 2 years as well.

Believe it or not Larry Bird…

Believe it or not Larry Bird was probably underrated, if that is possible.  I wonder if Magic hadn't been around if Larry would have been a bigger star, or if the rivalry is what made Larry Legend.

Edit:  ...and I'm a Pistons fan, so I don't really like Bird.

We can't have nice things.  …

We can't have nice things.

This is where Moore's recruiting and personality come in.  His number 2 pick should be up.

So the article said the…

So the article said the pecking order is age followed by alphabetical order when there is a tie.  Do Denegal and Orji have the same birthday?    That’s crazy if true.

it’s like that old stats thing where if you have 30 people in a room the odds are really high that two will have the same birthday.

I hope one of these guys take a huge step forward.

I think Wikipedia gets a bum…

I think Wikipedia gets a bum wrap.  I tried changing something 10-15 years ago and the editors of the page were all over it.  (I was correct with the change, but it went through a process and was actually rejected because I didn't have a proper source.)

On top of that it is a non-profit providing factual unbiased information for free to the masses.  The National Institute of Health says:

"Wikipedia is by far the largest online encyclopedia, and the number of errors it contains is on par with the professional sources even in specialized topics such as biology or medicine. Yet, the academic world is still treating it with great skepticism because of the types of inaccuracies present there, the widespread plagiarism from Wikipedia, and historic biases, as well as jealousy regarding the loss of the knowledge dissemination monopoly. This article argues that it is high time not only to acknowledge Wikipedia's quality but also to start actively promoting its use and development in academia."

Of course this is a journal article that I'm quoting that does not speak for the whole NIH, which is why it is hard for people to trust sources that any yahoo on the internet can edit or quote.

I still think Wikipedia is cool.

Just listened on my walk.  Hearing the roundtable talk about Moore and the coaches he's bringing in you've got to feel good about the direction of the program.  Likeability is so important.

Hard to see a coach leaving…

Hard to see a coach leaving a historically strong basketball school like UCONN or NC.  You also don't want a coach over say [57].  You want someone who at least has the potential of coaching 10 years, can adapt to the transfer portal age and is still up for a big change.  A 65 year old John Calipari isn't going to leave Kentucky.

I believe that is how Dennis…

I believe that is how Dennis Rodman was discovered.

Looks like he is a pretty…

Looks like he is a pretty good recruiter

I admittedly haven't heard of most CFB coaches, but everyone Moore has brought in seems super solid.  Looking forward to seeing what they do on the recruiting trail and on the field.

This right here.  Warde…

This right here.  Warde needs to get the NIL and transfer issues (accepting players) fixed before anything else.  Fix those issues and give Juwan a year to show he make an improvement.  We probably wouldn't have gotten all of the players who didn't make it here, but probably most of them.   If Warde doesn't fix NIL and the acceptance stuff in the next [month] he should be fired.  In fact we should probably just fire him and bring in someone who can fix those issues.

What are the acceptance/recruiting issues?

NCAA-The Argentinian Kid had an issue with paying back his [$1200] per diem with the NCAA.  This is mind boggling.  Why someone didn't throw him a $50k NIL immediately is beyond me.  (Are foreign players not eligible for NIL?)

Transferring Classes--I know people who transferred from CC, Western and other schools (30 years ago) and none of their classes transferred.  I get academic integrity, but I think this is largely a money grab.  Athletes have tutors who could help them with any gaps in their knowledge.  ...and while many athletes go on to be doctors, lawyers, etc., you can't tell me that the English class from [Stanford/North Carolina/Texas Tech] aren't good enough for a sports communications degree.

NIL--Other schools are openly paying players (See OSU/Miami bidding wars in football).  Michigan gets dinged for cheeseburgers so we can't play like that with inducements, and I agree with the ideas that you want teams and not mercs, but there is no reason we can't have players tell recruits what their NIL situation is like.  I don't know if we are really behind in NIL or not beyond message board chatter, but if we actually are, and Warde doesn't have something up his sleeve, he should be shown the door.  NIL and the transfer portal are the biggest changes to college sports ever.  Michigan should be the leaders and best....
