Breakdown sports is an amazing site. I started visiting it a few weeks ago and have enjoyed it immensely, props to SC! Love the content, please continue improving our lives!

Living in the SF area was… Living in the SF area was good for this. I kept hearing about how awful it was dealing with MSU fans from my midwestern friends and… I never causally ran into more than one or two in my 15 years in the area.

I just discovered this show a few weeks ago and it’s become “must watch” material for me. Love it!

I thought the best part was when Sam asked DG what it was like to look over and see your coach looking defeated on the sideline early in a game. “Next subject… I don’t want to talk about it… what are you trying to do here?”

Rushing, for the reason HR…

Rushing, for the reason HR states above. It’s not like it’s impossible to lose but I think your chances of winning a game making those gains on the ground and what that means for the opposing defense and time of possession, make it the more attractive option

I missed most of the game, so I cannot comment on most of these, but did catch the last drive and completely agree with that spot being overly generous

I was in Kauai for the 2011 win. Pot of coffee, pacing around the apartment eating a papaya. I’ll never forget it.

Agree. I’d move to the Bay Area out of college especially if you’re in tech, finance, or even the sciences. Stick it out until kids then move somewhere else.

I had a great 15 years in CA. Tons of fun but wouldn’t want my kids growing up in the Silicon Valley environment.

Global Pandemic.

I had season tickets in college when we were bad (02-06). Then lived several thousand miles away for over a decade and now I’m back and have an unvaccinated daughter. That will change next bball season, so see ya then.

between those two positive tests, which were about 3 months apart she had about one dozen negative tests (works for the cdc and is on the front lines being tested frequently).

We can add her to the list of people that have tested positive more than once.

Are you talking about the …

Are you talking about the ‘every three weekly’?

i agree that most of it was not funny, but I’ll always remember their Michael Phelps piece.

I’ve been excited about this…

I’ve been excited about this game since the day it was added to the schedule. I live on the left coast and my wife is from Seattle, giving us extra incentive to vacation up there and attend the game. I’ve always enjoyed the city, and their stadium seems nice from afar (never experienced an actual game there).

McCaffrey will in all likelihood be our starter and I grew up in the era when these early season cross country trips didn’t end well for Michigan. I hope we can come out strong in a hostile environment after a very long trip out west to start the season. Should be a fun one.

How can you say that? Based…

How can you say that? Based on what? The game is completely different now than it was because of the equipment.

But don’t take my word for it:

not that I put too much emphasis on it, bc it’s unverified, but worth thinking about.

How do you measure the skill…

How do you measure the skill of one golfer over another from two different time periods?

It is virtually impossible due to the differences in technology and equipment that each player used.

Some facts:

“...Nicklaus cranked a 341-yard blast to win the PGA Championship’s long drive competition in 1963 with the “old ball.” When he was 18 years old, he and Arnold Palmer drove the green on a 330-yard par 4 at Athens (Ohio) CC, a story Nicklaus shared at Palmer’s memorial service.

Today, such drives are routine. According to shotlink data, there were 200 measured drives of 375 yards or longer during the 2015-16 PGA Tour season, including eight surpassing the 400-yard barrier.

Study the career of Fred Couples to grasp the impact technology has made on driving distance at the game’s highest level.

In 1982, Couples was a limberbacked 22-year-old with immense flexibility. He averaged 268.7 yards in driving distance, which was eighth on the PGA Tour.

In 2009, Couples was a 49-year-old with a decade-and-a-half battling serious back problems. He averaged 297.5 yards in driving distance, which was 24th on the PGA Tour.”

His career has not been discounted.

As it stands Jack is the goat and Tiger earns the title of most dominant in his day. Had Tiger not been injured for years on end, things would probably be different.

I was past angry and…

I was past angry and laughing at the officiating during Q1 of the PSU game. It was far more offensive to me than what had occurred in the Packers vs Lions game a few days prior but, because it happened in Q1 and not Q4 (in my opinion) it received little attention.

That was the most satisfying Michigan win I’ve seen in a long time. Good for JH and good for the team. Hopefully this level of play is now the status quo.

I had a good laugh at this comment.... I'm assuming that the irony was intentional.

Agreed, it seemed like we…

Agreed, it seemed like we outplayed them for most / all of the game.

What’s missing from this write up is how absolutely devastating the poor ref job in Q1 was. The push off, the no PI call, etc... that’s what led to the 21-0 game, which should have never been. If that had happen in Q4 (lions game on Monday) people would be going crazy.

I feel for Bell, I feel for the team.

Same old lions... Nothing will change until the Fords are gone, I suspect.

On a different note, can anyone explain to me why Pitbull is on the site banner? I did a brief search and couldn't find any answers

Lol, good luck convincing…

Lol, good luck convincing your kids to stay in MI. I graduated in 06 and all of my friends that went to Michigan left the state except for 2... and I was born and raised in Ann Arbor.

The best pitch: Buy them a house in Michigan, promise them free daycare, and establish a local market on par with those found in NY, Chi, SF, etc... to support a high paying job in their desired field of employment.

Or you can just move wherever they end up.

I grew up in Ann Arbor and…

I grew up in Ann Arbor and have lived in SF but have migrated down the peninsula a bit.

I agree with all of this but would say the two biggest pros are the food and the proximity to amazing natural beauty.

Everyone in the Bay Area thinks that every other person on this planet wants to move to San Francisco and live their life, which is annoying and also probably helps create the bad dating scene (something I’ve heard as well)

Agree.

I guess it…

Agree.

I guess it depends on the opportunity, but I know a lot of people that leave CA and regret their decision after a year or so. San Diego has a lot going for it.

Uggg, this reminds me that I…

Uggg, this reminds me that I’m going to have to deal with my “we should fire Harbaugh” relative this week.

I’ll have to drown my brain in CBS or KBS before he comes over this year

I agree with this.

So long…

I agree with this.

So long as we’re talking about Sept 2nd, everyone should take a moment to recall the reaction on this board and all the “fire Harbaugh” takes after the PSU game last year.

Felt almost identical to the “fire Beilein” takes a few years back.

Happy for these kids, the staff, and excited about the future of the program.

Go Blue

Totally agree. I’m enjoying watching him play again. The game is better with him around and playing well.

My original comment was supposed to be a reply to another post above predicting 1.5 majors / year for the next 4 years but it ended up down here. Oops.

I would be very very…

I would be very very surprised to see him average 1.5 majors / year for the next 4 years. In fact, I’m going to say that’s borderline impossible as there aren’t many players that have won majors after the age of 42, so it win 6 between the age of 43-47 (he turns 43 on 12/30) would be arguably the greatest feat in the history of sports.

I’m thrilled and impressed that he won, but he’s not going to be better than he was. The field is far far better and he’s much older. I think he wins 2-3 more majors max, which is damn impressive for everything he’s been through.

San Carlos, CA for ~10 years…

San Carlos, CA for ~10 years. Thought about moving back to Ann Arbor, and still might some day...

Pros:

  • Weather
  • Small town feel in a huge metropolitan area
  • Economy
  • Beautiful surroundings and things to do in the area
  • Lots of Michigan fans
  • Almost zero MSU and OSU fans

Cons:

  • Cost of living
  • Traffic
Yeah, not very surprising

this general premise has been known for a long time. I was shocked that this was PNAS track 1 bc this idea has been well established in the field.

I’ve seen data suggesting that there will be some cancer susceptibility / check point responsiveness papers coming out in the next couple years that are also due to rural lifestyle / animal exposure, so stay tuned for that

Biased toward Yosemite

Got married on the valley floor at what was the Ahwahnee a couple years ago, so I'll have to vote for that.

I'd say Zion is my favorite to visit if I'm car camping. Glacier was my favorite to backpack. I'd love to make it up to some of the parks in Alaska but I'll have to wait a couple years to make those trips.

The OP mentioned Joshua Tree, and I'd have to agree for the most part. The best part about Joshua Tree is the evening / nights there. I have some great star pics from camping on the plateau there.

Was very poor for 4/5 of my UM life

Worked summers and weekends to afford beer and groceries. Declared for biochem late ensuring a 5th year of classes and got a job working ~35hrs a week at the Pfizer site. It payed ~$20/hr and I was only taking 2 courses a semester to finish up.

I’ve never felt richer than I did for that one year of my life.

SF or Ann Arbor

Spent my first 22 years of life in Ann Arbor before moving to SF by way of SD. When you take cost of living out of the equation, the only huge negative for SF is the traffic / congestion. I've been here for about 11 years and every now and again I have these "holy shit, I can't believe I live here" moments. That being said, my wife and i have come very very close to cashing out and moving to Ann Arbor bc of the people, culture, and quality of life.

Other places I'd consider:

Chicago

Seattle

Portland

Boulder

Missoula

Yeah, I've heard / read that

and I wouldn't be opposed to it. Our group isn't really on a tight budget, but the deal that I was given before that guy quit we-ko-pa would have been too good to pass up.

All the guys in our group have young families and we're trying to fit these trips in without pissing off our wives for another year or two. My brother priced out like 8 destinations and we weighed out travel time and other factors. St. George won this time, but I doubt we ever go back after this year.

Guarantee we go to Lexington and play Valhalla next year while drinking tons of bourbon... Very excited about that trip.

Additionally

I played TPC Scottsdale with a champions tour player of Q school fame, Joe Daly a few years back. It was a nice track, and walking rates were very cheap during the week (I recall something like $70). He recommended Talking Stick, but I never got to play again during my trip.

I was considering that same trip

For the past few years I've done something similar, and typically hit northern MI. I got the group out to play some Northern CA courses a couple years ago, but this year we had Scottsdale on our list of potential destinations. I had played a random round with a manager at We-ko-pa a few years back and these were his exact reommendations when I inquired as to whether or not there were stay and play packages (I don't know about price):

"There are some standard packages that include Troon North, The Boulders, and We Ko Pa - all great courses. The Ambiente course at Camelback is phenomenal and kind of unknown. Outside of the valley there are three must-plays but they have only one course. Quintero, Wickenburg Ranch, and Southern Dunes."

My group passed on AZ mostly bc that guy no longer worked at We Ko Pa and couldn't get us ridiculously cheap rates. Instead, we're heading to St. George, UT this April with some additional rounds being played in Mesquite, NV.

Good luck!

Can’t help you there

If you make it to North County SD it’s all over the place

This was her argument as well

She downplayed how dangerous it was

Curiosity

She said that she simply wanted to go and experience it. In the 1.5 years I've known her, she has been to North Korea, Mongolia, and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, so travelling and adventure are right up her alley.

She did say that she's not interested in going back, but is very happy that she took the opportunity to visit when she did.

My coworker visited North Korea

1 or 2 years ago. I had a similar reaction to many posters on this board, asking if she was insane. She went, was not tortured, and claims that it was a great experience. Now we have a bunch of N. Korean memorabilia / propaganda lying around the office.

Good analysis

It was a clear victory from the get go. Hitting the 8 win mark this year is meeting modest/low expectations with a very young team. We have an oppourtunity to build off of this and pick up some nice wins @ Wisky and against OSU in the coming weeks. It will be fun to watch our young QB battle on the road, against a good defense, in a very hostile environment next week.

Go Blue!

It doesn't matter

What I think, I'm just some alum sitting on a couch with his family. It doesnt matter what I did or did not accomplish during my athletic career either.

My point is that you being a whiny little bitch on the internet isn't doing a damn thing to help this football program.

Wtf are you talking about?

Are we reading the same blog? A vast majority of the fan base is turning on the staff/ offense/ apparently now the defense. Everyone excited about the HARBAUGH brand are abandoning it because we haven't won a national championship in year 3 of this program-wide rebuild.

This fan base isn't being supportive of the football coaches or the players and if you think that's not negatively impacting the team, I don't know what to tell you.

Sorry

I couldn't help but think of that game when posting the question. Obviously they waited out the weather for that one, but would the do the same until 1-2am?
