Agreed. The Pentagon,…

Agreed. The Pentagon, notably, sits just across the Potomac in Arlington, VA. The Naval Academy is also just 30 minutes away. There is plenty to point at to support the Admirals (or any military themed name).

The burgundy and yellow unis don't work as well with any of the military name ideas, in my opinion, but it is Dan Snyder. He's just going to do whatever he feels like.

To be fair, the national…

To be fair, the national services that grade and rank players do not take into account a particular school's needs and whether a player fits the system. It appears that TK is trying to grade against Michigan's needs. So your snark is not just obnoxious, but ill-founded.

Sous vide is awesome and bar…

Sous vide is awesome and bar none the easiest way to cook a steak, but jdemille9 has it right that the reverse sear method puts out a better steak every time. With the reverse sear, you have the slow heating of sous vide, but with a dry heat so that it gets a harder sear when it comes time to sear. The high amount of moisture at the end of the immersion cook makes getting a good sear more difficult.

I agree they should not, but…

I agree they should not, but I think they will. If they are still undefeated at the end of the regular season, they likely will have climbed back up to being ranked two or three. If they lose to an undefeated Georgia in the SEC Championship game by a FG... I could see that being enough for them to get in.

I do hope I'm wrong.

Alabama needs to lose…

Alabama needs to lose another regular season game or get blown out in the SEC Championship.

Alabama truly controls their own destiny. If they win the rest of their regular season games, they will make the CFP with either a win in the SEC Championship game or a close loss in the SEC Championship game.

Alabama's losses are, by definition, quality losses. They did, after all, lose to the team that beat Alabama.

To have any chance that this…

To have any chance that this rules change would be adopted, you'd have to pitch it as a player safety initiative. We all know that kickoffs are the most dangerous plays in the game. If, however, the kicking team was always kicking it out the back of the endzone, the risk of injury would drop substantially as we wouldn't see nearly as many kick returns attempted.

By making it 2 points, we would keep the value high enough that people would go for it and still decrease the likelihood of overtime games as teams would be scoring 6 points on a TD, 3 points on a FG, 2 points for a KOFG, 2 points on a 2-pt conversion, and 1 point for an extra point. Anything to increase the variability of football scores decreases the likelihood of overtime and decreases injuries.

In this case "mild" means…

In this case "mild" means not requiring hospitalization. I have a friend who had a "mild" case and had a fever for almost a month. She ran a marathon a year ago and now gets winded walking up the stairs. Mild doesn't mean it's a cold. Mild means it is the flu on steroids.

There are two big concerns…

There are two big concerns. One concern, which you raised, is that students will act as transmission vectors and re-seed COVID-19 in their home communities across the country. The second concern, is that we really don't know the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on the body. Even though the CFR is much lower among young adults, that doesn't tell us what kinds of long-term harm COVID-19 might be doing to the lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, or brain.

I want to watch Michigan football (and basketball, and baseball, and softball, and whatever BTN will give me). But I don't think that the risk is worth it.

I think it is clear that…

I think it is clear that football -- or any other team sport -- probably shouldn't be happening this year. I also think that plans to have college resume in-person in the fall probably aren't workable.

Even if class sizes were kept to 10 or 25, the problem is the social mixing that occurs from a varied class schedule, clubs, dining, and close-proximity living in the dining hall.

Say you have ONE sick person come to campus in the fall who does later develop symptoms. That student goes to a few days of classes before developing a fever and being isolated. In that few days, the student has been in close proximity to maybe 50 kids in classes and maybe another 50 or more through activities, parties, dining, etc. Now there are 100 kids who have been exposed and maybe if you're lucky only 30 of them got enough of a viral load to get sick. By the time all of those kids have been identified and isolated, another 1000 or 2000 kids have been exposed.

The issue is that in re-opening, the most important thing is to have limited exposure to other people and to keep those groups relatively static. The more social mixing that is occurring the faster an outbreak can spread.

What does Army do if they…

What does Army do if they get down by two scores? It seems that their plodding offense is a solid strategic choice if the game is close or they have a lead. It seems a very poor choice if you are down 0-14 (unless you are playing just to prevent the deficit from growing).

I guess what I'm saying is everyone's got a plan until you punch them in the mouth. If we can get some big plays early, that might put Army on their heels in a way that benefits us.

Thoughts on sous vide ribs?…

Thoughts on sous vide ribs?

I'm sure it is heresy to cook your ribs sous vide, but I'm curious whether you have tried it and what you think. I have an annual cookout where I do close to fifty pounds of ribs and I needed a method that would let me cook in such quantity. I turned a coffin cooler into a huge sous vide. I can prep the ribs with a dry rub the night before, add some liquid smoke (I cheat), and put them in the sous vide for a really long cook at a ridiculously low temperature -- 24 hours at 152 degrees. I pull them out and dry them off (they have essentially been cooking in their own rendered fats for 24 hours). I keep some sauce simmering on a burner next to me, sauce them on the grill, and leave them on the grill just long enough for the sauce to start to thicken and cling to the ribs.

I've gotten more compliments on these ribs than any other method I've used. It is pretty close to fool proof. Plus for a large event, I can keep pulling out fresh off the grill ribs every 10 to 15 minutes for as long as hungry folks keep asking for them.

It looks to me like the ball…

It looks to me like the ball was underthrown in at least a few of his go-routes in that tape. I wonder whether his numbers haven't been limited by QB play at the HS level. It looked like defenders were able to get involved at the catch due to the placement of the ball. Probably higher TD numbers and more yards if those balls were thrown so that he could run under them.

I have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring and a 2007 Toyota Prius. When we get new cars we are planning to go with an electric car (they are iterating pretty quickly, so will leave that generic) and a Toyota Rav4 Hybrid.

We have one kid and a second on the way. Our first kid is into sports and we are going to need to haul him and his sports equipment around. Two kids leads to a lot of junk in the trunk (strollers and such). We thought a small SUV would give us enough space. We went the station wagon direction last time (Hyundai Elantra Touring) and love it, but the selection of decent wagons keeps getting worse and worse. Also, the Rav4 Hybrid gets better gas mileage than any wagon I've seen (around 40 mpg).

Finally, I go camping or hiking a few times a month during the summer months and the ground clearance reduces any concerns about whether the trailhead is back a dirt road.

The Big Ten suspended a coach for gently shoving a player earlier this year. Yelling at your player within inches of his face is just about at that level.

When will fans start to admit that this kind of coaching isn't "tough love" it is abuse. It shouldn't be tolerated.

You're making many…

You're making many assumptions including that OP does not have a job and is planning on cooking all day. Unsurprisingly, there are many jobs that can be done from home and employers have increasingly flexible telecommuting policies for those jobs.

Also, you seem to fundamentally misunderstand what a slow cooker is. Typically one does not have to closely tend a slow cooked meal. Instead, it is a meal where you do some initial prep, turn the slow cooker on and leave it alone for 4-8 hours.

In other words, you seem to have a lot of pent up rage about something and trying to find a way to take it out on OP for this OT post.

I actually find the bowl…

I actually find the bowl game more interesting because the biggest names skip it. It gives us an opportunity to see a preview of our team next year.

This, right here, is a good…

This, right here, is a good advertisement for why pre-season or even early season polls are atrocious. The problem here is poll inertia.

If a voter put Kansas or Virginia in the top few spots in the pre-season, they are looking for a reason to drop them below Michigan. The question isn't "who has the better resume" or "in a vaccuum which do I think is the better team." Instead, the poll voters are asking themselves, can I justify moving TEAM X down given that they keep winning?

Similarly, Michigan has to prove every week that they belong near the top. If Michigan proves that they belong AND a team ahead of them loses, Michigan gets to move up. Michigan doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt as teams that started the season ranked in the top 5 or top 10.

Yes -- and if Michigan and…

Yes -- and if Michigan and Maryland both win this weekend, they will have sole possession of third with MSU and PSU both falling to 3-3.

Did those scenarios…

Did those scenarios involving Michigan losing 3 out of the last 4?

Also, as pointed out in the…

Also, as pointed out in the comments below, EYM is not actually opponent adjusted as it doesn't take into account your opponents' opponents. This statistic counts a yard against Michigan the same as a yard against Rutger the same as a yard against MSU.

If you run up 600 yards on Rutger and 100 yards on Michigan, the numbers would say you average 350 YPG. This would work out to 350 - (334 - 387.4 +410.9) = O-Margin = 39.5.

If someone else put 350 yards on MSU and 250 yards on Michigan, the numbers would say you average 300 YPG. This would work out to 300 - (287.5 - 387.4 +410.9) = O-Margin = 36

I'm more impressed by the second team, despite the lower O-Margin.

Are MSU's linebackers likely…

Are MSU's linebackers likely to fall prey to a play action game? With poor safety play it seems like the game would be ripe for taking advantage of the mis-match with Gentry, both on seam routes and relatively quick-hitting play action passes where you get the linebackers to take an initial step forward and hit him 7-10 yards down field.

I think the reason it is…

I think the reason it is important to establish that MSU's win over PSU was luck is because, statistically speaking, it appears that it was. That is not to say that all of Michigan State's wins are luck.

In 2015, when MSU beat Michigan they got lucky on the final play. Looking back at the game, however, Michigan had substantial luck to be in a position to win the game. MSU beat us on 1st downs (20-to-10), beat us on total yards (386-to-230), beat us on passing yard (328-to-168), and both teams had about 60 passing yards.

The final turnover was the only turnover of the game.

If I show you that box score and nothing else, you'd look at it and tell me that MSU probably won the game. In fact, you'd probably guess that it was more than a 4 point win.

That's what Bill Connelly's argument about "luck" is trying to get at. Based on the underlying statistics -- and how those statistics typically convert into points -- how likely is it that you win that game. In the case of the MSU-PSU game, MSU had everything go their way. That happens sometimes.
