Why not just pay people…

Why not just pay people based on their market value? Isn’t this how America works?

If harbaugh wants to offer…

If harbaugh wants to offer clink and elston then he should do it regardless of what Moore thinks. It would be incredibly unfair to clink and elston to have opportunities and raises denied to them because harbaugh wants to do Moore a solid. Think about how toxic the workplace could be if that ever came to light.

It’s much better to just let everyone go where they want to go.

This makes sense. If the…

This makes sense. If the defense is so good and the offensive is bad, then the positive feedback is so sparse that the offensive doesn't know which incremental changes will help it get better.

In AlphaZero https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlphaZero they developed an unbeatable chess program by having two AIs of similar level practice against each other and improve simultaneously for this reason. If the two sides are too imbalanced, then the weaker side has no clue how to improve because every one of its actions lead to no gain.

Is it possible that because…

Is it possible that because Barnhart’s getting cooked in pass pro they are afraid to spend an extra 2 seconds on faking a handoff for play action?

PRINCETON!!!!!!

PRINCETON!!!!!!

It would not require a…

It would not require a miracle.  In the NBA he either learns defense or he doesn't get playing time.  No intelligent GM would avoid drafting him just because he ball-watches a lot.

I wait for this post every day thank you TB9!

Each additional (national)…

Each additional (national) gun restriction makes it makes it x% harder for someone to shoot someone.  Layer enough of these restrictions and you start reducing shootings on the margin.  And that’s a good start—saving even one additional child’s life (or even a policeman’s life given how dangerous their job is in an armed society) should be worth giving up some of our guns.

Do coaches actually want…

Do coaches actually want statues of themselves?

I think there were a few…

I think there were a few Indiana games in the beginning-ish of Harbaugh's tenure that fit your criteria, though your larger point holds.

Hey Seth, on the new formula…

Hey Seth, on the new formula that adjusts for time remaining: are the units supposed to be (points/time)?  If you want to add your adjustment to EPA then the units need to be (points).

I look forward to the…

I look forward to the translated post!

“he may well be the type of…

“he may well be the type of kids that looks at the bigger picture”

Can we stop saying things like this?  Just because someone takes the money doesn’t mean they aren’t looking at the “bigger picture”.  In fact, taking the $1m and investing it into, say, an index fund would probably be the most optimal “big picture” move.

So ban hand guns.

So ban hand guns.

Transformative in what way? …

Transformative in what way?  Lots of programs offer good player development and paths to the NFL.  Is it academics?  Well, even in the Ivy League these football/basketball players aren’t there to play school.  Sounds a lot like “getting paid in exposure”, which no one in their right mind would accept.

I wonder how much of that is…

I wonder how much of that is the AD vs donors not having the appetite to fund big NIL spending.  Because if a donor offers the #1 recruit for the next cycle $1m to come to UM, I doubt the AD would stop them.

My guess is that rich dudes in the south just care more about football.

No, NIL is people being paid…

No, NIL is people being paid what people want to pay them.  Whether someone is a student or employee or whatever else you want to call them, what gives anyone the right to stop this?

Really excited about him. …

Really excited about him.  Question: If the dude really runs 4.4 then what limits him from covering slots?

Once you're in college, no…

Once you're in college, no one cares what high school you went to. Once you're in grad school, no one cares what college you went to. Once you're in the industry, no one cares what schools you went to.

You're right.  But going to a good school helps for getting into grad school, and going to a good grad school helps for getting into a good company.  The fact that everyone who reports to you has strong pedigree while you are a relative outlier makes you the exception that proves the rule.

I've heard the same. …

I've heard the same.  However, students from lower tier schools will tend to find themselves struggling at UM once they're in, due to the lower quality education.

That’s how the real world…

That’s how the real world works.

To be fair, very few people…

To be fair, very few people can stay with elite NBA guards for more than one dribble.  In fact, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

Even with his lackluster…

Even with his lackluster sophomore season he should've gone higher in the 2019 draft.  A shooter with near-elite athleticism is a cheat code.

I always had a hunch he’d be…

I always had a hunch he’d be good.  An excellent shooter, ability to create his own shot, and plus athleticism?  Only a matter of time before he became a starter in the league.

It makes sense.  Imagine…

It makes sense.  Imagine being a high school recruit visiting ND and getting a boxed lunch, then in the next week visiting LSU and they're serving jambalaya.  Seems like the decision has already been made for you at that point.

I find Rodgers as annoying…

I find Rodgers as annoying as the next guy but he doesn’t deserve to be mentioned together with two criminals.

Dude looked like he was…

Dude looked like he was playing football out there.

Well, I am terrified.

Well, I am terrified.

In light of CTE it always…

In light of CTE it always confused me why players and even announcers would celebrate big hits.  Even if they aren’t helmet to helmet, full speed collisions aren’t good for the brain.

They need to run the high…

They need to run the high screen with hunter over and over again

How do you run a laser-timed…

How do you run a laser-timed 4.3 40 and still get rated a 3-star?

if the NCAA wants to get…

if the NCAA wants to get destroyed by the Supreme Court they are welcome to do so!

Wow EC you are so tough!!!

Wow EC you are so tough!!!

Yes, we should go back to the 70s, back to the days where coaches were choking players...

There’s a huge difference…

There’s a huge difference between being part time and full time.  Imagine the refs spending 40 hours a week working on reviewing plays and training, rather than just 3 a week 10 weeks a year.  Officiating would definitely improve.

FYI, New balances are…

FYI, New balances are definitely cool with the kids now thanks to the efforts of Kawhi Leonard

Thanks for sharing this piece of Mgolore

How is DJ Durkin still a…

How is DJ Durkin still a coach?

Finally we can actually…

Finally we can actually affect what is happening on the field!

One thing that I’d maybe wonder about is the amount of power the recruiting sites will have (rivals, 24/7, ESPN) in determining how much fans want to pay a player.  And they aren’t necessarily great scouts as compared to real college coaches.  May be helpful to have an independent Mgoranking of recruits we should be prioritizing our funding for, or even have Harbaugh just publish his recruiting board for us.

It's because everyone plays…

It's because everyone plays on hard courts here so no one knows how to do anything other than serve and hit forehands.  With the slower surfaces of this era, that's pretty bad.

Edit: Also consider that the vast majority of hard courts in the US are poorly maintained.  That makes the surface smoother and therefore even faster.

Is it really that dangerous?…

Is it really that dangerous? Most universities outside the US have no varsity sports at all.  The default view worldwide is that, yes, these sports serve no value or purpose being part of a school.  Because, you know, universities are academic institutions.

Why are you straw-manning…

Why are you straw-manning him?  His central point is about wealth rather than race.  So if we paraphrase correctly, it's more like "I love wealth redistribution when it's taking money away from rich people, but not when it's poor people."  This Georgia NIL bill essentially acts to transfer money away from the football and basketball players who come from predominantly blue-collar backgrounds to the predominantly white-collar squash, tennis, XC, swim, etc.  Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum, this should be abhorrent.

What's wrong with some of…

What's wrong with some of these non-revenue sports being converted to club sports?

well if there's anything the…

well if there's anything the 3rd round pick of trey lance has taught us, it's that team quality doesn't matter as long as you play well

They do; I think they say UT…

They do; I think they say UT-Austin because otherwise it might be confused for Tennessee.

You can have a shoe deal and…

You can have a shoe deal and want to beat Ohio State though

Also, literally any change to the status quo is preferred.  We haven’t beat OSU for like 10 years remember? 20 if we disregard Luke fickell’s year.

Don’t think so, but it might…

Don’t think so, but it might be matchup dependent because Johns and Livers have very different skillsets.

Yeah, agreed the legal case…

Yeah, agreed the legal case isn’t there at the moment.  This is why most of the push has been to change the law so that these athletes are classified as employees, so that this logic can apply.  If college basketball is a profit-generating business, and the athletes are the primary labor, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be classified as employees.

Internships outside of…

Internships outside of school for *skilled* and *lucrative* professions are paid.  See: all of engineering, finance, etc.  NCAA basketball is pretty skilled and lucrative.

Brian said this before, but…

Brian said this before, but there’s a very easy (and time-tested) mechanism to determine the fair amount the athletes should be paid: the free market.  Let all universities offer whatever they want (scholarships, money, free sandwiches) and see how the compensation works out.  As it is now, the universities are operating as an anti-competitive trust and are one-sidedly determining the compensation.
