Honestly I feel bad for the…

Honestly I feel bad for the guy. I mean.....not too bad considering he can swim in ten vault's worth of Scrooge McDuck kind of money. But from the perspective of being able to win it all, yeah I feel a little bad.

He's one of the better baseball players of this generation and he could very well go into retirement without a single World Series ring to his name. The Angels haven't really come close to truly competing for titles in his time with the organization, gotten to a World Series, much less won one.

By the time his current contract is up, he'll be 38-39 years old, and while he could still play another few years beyond that, he won't be the same player then that he is now. Maybe he can go the Pujols route and try to latch on to a team that is in "win now" mode, looking to add a few more butts in seats with having Mike Trout on the roster, but otherwise his prospects are looking slim with staying where he is.

The guy must really love Anaheim, because his team sure isn't doing a lot to surround him with the kind of team he'd need to win a World Series.

If he bet on anything other…

If he bet on anything other than baseball, we'll eventually be able to file this under the category of "no one really cares. He'll get a relative slap on the wrist. It'll be a sort-of funny SNL skit, it'll make the rounds on late night talk shows for a few weeks, and then after that, it'll be ancient news.

If he bet on baseball, then that changes everything, and he's in a world of trouble.

Can't wait for all the "Well…

Can't wait for all the "Well we can't play ourselves" excuses to rain down.

That'll be somewhere in between "We're a tough team" and "ARGH CONNER STALLIONS CHEATERZZZZZ BRING THE HAMMER"

Unless they are all grad…

Unless they are all grad transfers (and maybe they are), why are we even remotely confident our admissions department would let them in without ruining their credit transfer situation?

Why don’t I just go eat some…

Why don’t I just go eat some hay? I can make things out of clay and lay by the bay, I just may! Whattaya say?!

IIRC from listening to the…

IIRC from listening to the podcast, Brian and Co. were not as high on him because he’s at a school that spends significantly more on its athletic resources compared to its conference counterparts (like GCU does), so, while he may be a really good coach, we don’t know if he’s been working with built-in advantages that other schools around him simply did not have.

Uhhhh.....Keon?

You uhhhh,…

Uhhhh.....Keon?

You uhhhh, wanna come back? You can start now!!

Friend? Buddy? AMIGO?!?

In all seriousness, it sucks, but injuries are part of the game. Time for guys like Zeke Berry to step up and see what they can do. Having Quinten Johnson back here definitely helps as well.

I'm waiting for his sit-down…

I'm waiting for his sit-down tell all interview one day where he finally gets to say everything he wants to say about the NCAA. I have to believe he's been perfecting what he's wanted to say for months.

That said, I'm guessing he feels that even though he knows he's free and clear from the NCAA himself, Michigan isn't, and he doesn't want to say anything that could hurt them. But I won't be surprised if in the next 3-5 years or so, he does some kind of interview that provides rather scathing remarks about the NCAA.

OSU fans are mad?

Good.

OSU fans are mad?

Good.

Michigan had to sit there and take it for nearly 20 years. Eating shame sandwiches with a side order of s**t every November and all you could do was suck it up and eat it, because what else could you do? OSU just had your number.

Had to sit there for years and listen to OSU players talk about how Michigan doesn't take the rivalry seriously, and in some cases, you had guys like Jeremy Ruckert saying "its not even a rivalry anymore."

Hard for me to feel too bad for them when they had it so good for so long that they never had to experience heartbreak.

This. ^^^

I never remotely…

This. ^^^

I never remotely understood the "Well Tressel had wins vacated and got suspended, along with players getting suspended, so Michigan needs to be nuked into orbit!!"

Show me anywhere that you have proof that Harbaugh is lying, beyond just the "Well he's the head coach so he HAD to know!" That doesn't work. You're the accuser. You need to provide the proof.

If you can provide tangible proof that Harbaugh lied, then fine, levy additional punishment and Michigan will have to find a way to deal with it. Until then, the only thing to say is that you guys are just mad that Harbaugh managed to get the best of you three years in a row. And the last time, he didn't even need to be in the building in order to do it.

Beating Vanderbilt out for…

Beating Vanderbilt out for anything that isn’t baseball related isn’t all that impressive, but point on Louisville absolutely taken.

This was the worst Michigan…

This was the worst Michigan basketball team in 50-60 years. Honestly, I’m not sure I can get much worse than it was this season. I don’t think it’s unrealistic to ask Dusty to win more than eight games next year. I don’t expect into contend for the NCAA tournament, but he should win double digit games anyway.

Even if he didnt, what’s the difference between 8–24 and 5–27? The answer is not much.

Whatever you do, don’t…

Whatever you do, don’t expect it next year. The roster is devastated.

No one should expect anything next year, other than being better than 8-24.

Maybe you’re right, but I…

Maybe you’re right, but I have to ask: who are you going to hire who you know for a fact is better?

Jay Wright was NOT coming out of retirement, and Creighton’s, Iowa State’s and St. Mary’s coach are not leaving their current posts. They’ve either been there too long, or their buyout is absurd. Anyone else you were going to hire was a risk in someway, shape or form. Medved was probably the safest hire, but he doesn’t have the ceiling that Dusty has.

Michigan basketball is at a very low point right now. I’m OK with hiring the guy who has the upside, because we’re already in the cellar. How much worse can it get?

Anyone else watching final…

Anyone else watching final four highlights from 2013 and 2018 tonight like I am?

This program can get back there. It doesn’t need to Beilein to do it. And we have a coach who’s actually gotten there.

Don’t expect miracles next year. Next year is absolutely year zero, and no one should reasonably expect a tournament bid next year. But as long as the program shows progress next year and can contend for the tournament after next season, I’m OK with that. I am more than OK with hiring the guy with a upside versus the safe choice.

The question still remains…

The question still remains of whether that run is more a product of the coach versus the players, but May still deserves a lot of credit for recruiting those players.

Either way, I think this is the best possible hire Michigan could’ve made. Jay Wright was not coming out of retirement, especially not to coach this team, and John Beilein isn’t 10 years younger and all of a sudden willing to throw away who he is over NIL. This guy may not work out, and he probably wasn’t the safest tire, but when you are as low as you are right now, what do you have to lose?

Given where Michigan’s program is right now, I’ll take the upside over the safe hire.

Not sure if you’re being…

Not sure if you’re being serious or not, but McDermott has been at Creighton for over 20 years.

As Brian has said multiple times on the podcast over the last three weeks, if he wanted to leave, he would’ve left by now. Same goes for whoever coaches St. Mary’s.

If you want to call him and force him to tell you, no, then fine, but be prepared for him to shut the door in your face.

If NIL wasn’t a thing, maybe…

If NIL wasn’t a thing, maybe he’s worth a call. But he won’t know a damn thing about how to navigate that world.

Cancer does not discriminate…

Cancer does not discriminate. Young or old, rich or poor, black or white, male or female, it can attack us all. It. Does. Not. Care.

I hope she makes a full recovery. No child should ever have to grow up without their mother.

Pretty sure he’s retired,…

Pretty sure he’s retired, but picking up the phone and giving him a call Wouldn’t be the worst idea. He can Coach DL, he can recruit his balls off, and he loves the school.

That said, I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t want to come back and coach in a “lesser role” for the school that fired him. That takes a level of swallowing your pride that I’m not even sure I’d be able to do.

Honestly after Bert tried to…

Honestly after Bert tried to virtue signal after Sign-Gate, talking about how “disgusting” he thought it was, I’m all for taking members of his staff if they’re any good. Not ashamed to admit that I’d do it out of pure spite as well.

Dusty May going to be in the…

Dusty May going to be in the market in roughly 10 minutes.

Are we sure we don’t want Chris Collins?

I know some people aren't…

I know some people aren't really a fan of Gus Johnson, and yeah, its not as fun to listen when your team is losing, but man he's got some great moments in this game.

QUINTEN JOHNSON! LAYIN' THE WOOD!

OH MY GOODNESS, Treveyon Henderson gets WAXED!!

Like him or not, his emotion and passion for the game is contagious. He and Klatt are a breath of fresh air from most everyone else.

Been doing less with more…

Been doing less with more for the better part of a decade.

He out-recruits everyone and hasn’t made a Final Four since 2015.

Medved is probably the…

Medved is probably the safest bet. Solid fundamental basketball, efficient, good defense, but I’d be keeping an eye on what May does this tournament. If they make another run, you might need to make him your top candidate.

That prediction is NOT…

That prediction is NOT looking good right now.

Your audition is not going…

Your audition is not going well, Niko.

Only move Moore could make,…

Only move Moore could make, and it was the right call anyway. If it was a first time, maybe you could figure something out. But this is repeated behavior, and not the example you want to set with your players.

Also, considering the ultra-microscope Michigan has been under for the last 6-9 months, no need to put your program's name in the news for any off-field stuff more than it already is.

Wouldn't be the worst idea…

Wouldn't be the worst idea. If there was anything Brady Hoke knew how to coach, its DL. We all know he can recruit, and he loved Michigan. Obviously those sentiments may have changed since....you know...being fired by them. But I wouldn't be upset if Michigan gave him a call.

Really just depends on what…

Really just depends on what happens around them in any given year. Defensive players are absolutely at a disadvantage, but Hutch finished runner up a few years ago, and if Georgia had beat Alabama in the SEC title game, Hutch probably wins the Heisman over Bryce Young.

Looking forward to seeing…

Looking forward to seeing Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant blowing right by him next November.

Didn't they win on near…

Didn't they win on near buzzer beaters more than a handful of the tournament games that year? I know Purdue was leading, or they were at least tied, right up until the final seconds in the Elight Eight and then UVa has the go-ahead score with something like <10 seconds remaining. Same with whoever they played in the semifinals too. Can't remember if it happened in the finals or in the Sweet 16 as well, but it was like they took several year's worth of good luck and crammed it all into one tournament run.

Just me, but I really don't…

Just me, but I really don't see an issue with it. Could it have been a little nicer? Probably, but his tenure here was a failure. Truth hurts. If the Daily takes that fact and makes it into a witty catchphrase, then that's their choice to make, as long as they are willing to live with the consequences. If people want to stop reading the Daily over it, then that is their choice as well.

This was not a headline saying that Howard should never be allowed to set foot on campus, the Fab Five should be erased from the history books, that Howard has ugly parents, etc. The headline called Howard's tenure here what it is. A failure. He's still a legandary figure at Michigan as a former player, and he always will be. But his coaching career here was nowhere near up to snuff.

You don't like it? Don't go 8-24. That result is really freaking hard to ignore.

Its just hard for me to envision being this offended over this kind of a headline. Then again, we live in an era where everyone is offended by everything so maybe I should accept it as par for the course.

Honestly, don't bother…

Honestly, don't bother. Michigan fans (at least when it comes to basketball) have NOTHING to poke fun and heckle about. Got swept by MSU, didn't make the tournament, and had our worst season in decades. Maybe sit the next couple plays out, Champ.

I remember rolling my eyes when a bunch of MSU fans showed up to the first two rounds of the 2013 tournament in Detroit wearing SDSU and VCU clothing, just to try and piss off Michigan fans. Just my $0.02, I wouldn't say its worth stooping to their level.

Any man who has to tell…

Any man who has to tell people his team is tough does not have a tough team.

I hated Urban Meyer and I still do, but he never had to tell anyone how tough his teams were. You took one look at them and knew that win or lose, you were going to get beat to hell over the next 3.5 hours.

I think right now the only…

I think right now the only surefire candidate to be a first rounder next year is Will Johnson. He will likely be the first corner off the board, but beyond that, I don't see any certainties right now. There are definitely candidates, though.

Graham is probably the best DT in college football, but I've read that he may not be considered a first rounder because he doesn't have the prototypical size that the league is looking for with its DTs. He's got all the other tools, but supposedly not the size. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Kenneth Grant gets drafted before Graham, simply based on his physical attributes. Grant probably has a lot more upside solely based on that.

There are other guys who have the potential to turn into first rounders, but they need more production. Derrick Moore is a possibility, and Loveland could, but I think his stock will probably be hampered this year by the lack of a passing game. He has all the tools, but he may not get as much of a chance to put them on display this season just based off who's throwing to him.

I've heard Rod Moore's name quite a bit so he can definitely work his way in there. I don't know if he has the prototypical speed and athleticism that the league looks for in first round safeties (maybe he does, I don't pay enough attention to know), but he's got the production to back it up.

Wouldn't get your hopes up on Edwards. He has some elite tools, and I was hoping this past season he'd build off a great 2022 campaign, but he would need to BLOW UP big time, particularly in the passing game, to warrant first round consideration. And I just don't think there will be enough of a passing game on display that will allow him to do that.

If Michigan offers him…

If Michigan offers him enough money and enough runway to build his program, then yes, a decent coach will come here.

Bill O'Brien went to Penn State after.....all that happened. We all thought no one in their right mind would touch that job.

Where one person sees an insurmountable obstacle, another person might see the challenge and opportunity of a lifetime. To build something up from nothing and truly make it their's. And make a crap-ton of money in the process.

So yes, if Michigan sweetens the pot enough, they will get a decent coach. Michigan basketball history shows that this program can be successful on a national level, if the right coach is afforded the opportunity and time to do so.

I think, at least for Dug,…

I think, at least for Dug, that ship sailed the minute he was handed his academic suspension. And besides, with how bad the team was this year and how very likely it is that it will just as bad next year whether they are here or not, what's the point in waiting around? Especially for Dug. I mean, its not like the academic side of things is going to just make things easier for him now.

I'd bet he just wants a fresh start. And who could blame him? Go somewhere where he might be able to play for a winner, and somewhere that takes its academics a little less seriously.

As for Reed, it probably just goes back to "why stick around next year for a team that clearly will be going nowhere in the time I have left?"

Going to be rough sledding…

Going to be rough sledding next year, basically an entirely new team. But as the MGoPodcast has pointed out several times over the last few months, is there anyone on this year's team that you would even want back, or fight to get back?

Nothing personal against Reed, Dug, or anyone who's bowing out. I bet a lot of them simply want a fresh start, but the team went 8-24 this year. Last place by four whole games. I'm not sure how next year could really be any worse, with or without them.

At this point I'm okay with blowing the whole thing up and starting over. Let whoever is coming in bring in their own guys, establish their own culture, and if it takes them 3-4 years to do it, then so be it.

Whatever happens, I'm going…

Whatever happens, I'm going to laugh when Illinois fails to make it out of the first weekend of the tournament again.

Underwood has Michigan's number. I won't dispute that one iota. But his teams are for s**t when it comes tournament time. Then again, so is most of the Big Ten, and I won't be surprised if most, if not all Big Ten teams are out by the end of the first weekend.

Honestly I'd rather Warde…

Honestly I'd rather Warde take the time to make the best possible hire than worry about getting someone ASAP in just to salvage one single recruiting class.

Make the best possible hire you can make, give him plenty of runway to build his program, because he's going to need a lot of it with the shape the roster will be in for at least another season or two, and then let him get to work.

I think whoever gets hired will need at least four years to get his roster in proper shape to where maybe it can contend for the Big Ten again. And Michigan can get there if it makes the right hire. But next year, and possibly the year after, will be pretty lean for Michigan Basketball.

Writing has essentially been…

Writing has essentially been on the wall with Dug since this whole suspension went down. Now that his coach is gone, what reason does he have to stick around?

I don't really blame him for wanting a fresh start. Maybe he's not a good student, but this has been a rough year for him and the basketball team at large. He's also got talent, and there will be plenty of programs that could use him. He'll have no shortage of offers, and likely at schools with much more lax academic requirements.

Best of luck to him.

I think if Michigan wants to…

I think if Michigan wants to four-peat, they need above average QB play at minimum, and with the guys that are currently on the roster right now, I can't say with any degree of certainty that we'll get that. The schedule does Michigan absolutely no favors next year, and unlike last year, there is no "ramp up" period for the team. You have Texas in Week 2, USC in week 4 or 5, and Oregon not long after.

Consider the fact that OSU, by comparison, has a stupid easy schedule next year. At Oregon will be tough, but if they get past Oregon, they'll almost certainly come to the Michigan game undefeated. They have to go to Penn State, but at this point in Franklin's tenure, the venue is scarier than the opponent itself. Short of Drew Allar having a career renaissance, I think its going to be same ol' same ol' for Penn State.

The defensive talent is there for Michigan to win the Big Ten again, but short of landing a difference-maker QB in the spring transfer portal (not impossible, don't know who will be entering but you can't put all your eggs in that basket), who gets up to speed QUICKLY, next year feels like a year where missing on Dante Moore or some other difference maker in his recruiting cycle will hold the team back from bigger goals.

And that's okay. Coming off a freaking national title, Sherrone Moore has a lot of built in runway as long as the team doesn't implode.

Sainristil is a loss for…

Sainristil is a loss for sure. That said, the difference between the holes that Sainristil leaves behind and the one JJ leaves behind is that at least with Sainristil's spot, there are viable options, and options with experience. It may require moving some pieces around in the secondary, but there are plenty of guys back there with experience. Quinten Johnson coming back allows you to be flexible in that regard.

QB is a big question mark in every sense of the word. None of the guys on the roster have viable experience in meaningful playing time. At least not as a passer. I know Orji has built in packages for specific moments in a game so he's seen the field. But certainly not as a passer, and I don't think we can just "wishbone" our way through the season, despite what Brian might have to say on the subject.

Its entirely possible that next year's starting QB isn't even on the roster right now. I have to believe Sherrone will be monitoring the portal very closely after the end of spring practice. Who knows who will hit the portal at that time, and you might have a lot of guys out there who would jump at the opportunity to be a starting QB for the defending national champions. There's probably guys out there who are even thinking about it right now, telling themselves "Let's see how my spring practice shakes out, but if it doesn't go the way I want, I'm entering the portal and giving Michigan a call."

All you need is a one year (two tops) bridge guy to get you to Jadyn being ready.

Really wish it worked out…

Really wish it worked out while he was here. That 2020-21 season was a thing of beauty, and it wasn’t all Beilein’s guys. There were plenty of “his guys” on the roster who were very meaningful contributors. On some level, Juwan can coach. But maybe he just needs the right circumstances in place.

I take no joy in his firing. I’ve been fired before, and it’s one of the most deflating, humiliating feelings you can ever experience. I just hope he uses this time to reflect, find out where he can improve, and get back on his feet. I imagine we’ll see him in the NBA ranks again before too long. Maybe that’s where he’s best.

I hate to put it this way,…

I hate to put it this way, but they’ve brought it up multiple times in the MGoPodcast in recent months.

There is likely going to be a lot of attrition on this roster this offseason, especially now that Juwan is leaving. But with that said, is there anyone on this roster that we even want back? This roster is so devoid of any meaningful talent that even if everyone came back next year, who can you reliably build a team around?

Not a single all conference mention. Not even honorable mention.

Sigh….how far we’ve fallen…..

Sigh….how far we’ve fallen…..

Ah. Duly noted.

Neg away,…

Ah. Duly noted.

Neg away, folks!

As someone who lived in…

As someone who lived in Columbus for two years, if you separate OSU from the city itself (I know, impossible to do but you can try), it’s not a bad place to live.

I lived there because I had to. Wasn’t my preferred choice, but I can’t say I hated the place.

The call is Sherrone’s to…

The call is Sherrone’s to make, but this is Scrugg’s third run in with this issue. And those are only the times he’s been caught. Who knows when else this has happened? My guess is he’s done this plenty of times and just didn’t get pulled over.

If this was a first time, maybe you put him on some kind of PIP, institute a zero tolerance plan going forward, but he’s not a first time offender. At face value, this feels like a situation where you need to cut ties. Your program is already under intense scrutiny from Sign-Gate. You don’t need anyone continuing to question your integrity as a program. As JUB says, do not turn a one day story into a two day story.

Let him go, help him find counseling, help him focus on what he needs to focus on, and go back to your Rolodex. Who was your runner up for the DL position? Call them up and ask if they’re still interested. SOMEONE will be happy to leave their current job right now to coach some of the best DL talent in America.
