I see almost all of the…

I see almost all of the conversation on this topic revolves around NCAA 11.6.1 and Football Rule 1-4-11-h, but what about Football Game Management Manual 14A? It does seem like the Big Ten is resorting to the potential NCAA violations instead of their own Big Ten rule (14A) for some reason, even though they do reference it in the Notice of Disciplinary Action. If they could lean on that rule, it seems like they'd have an easier time getting around your thought process in this diary.

Regardless of the above, they have included this in their notice:
"It does not matter whether the NCAA ultimately finds that violations of its rules occurred, though it has already communicated to the Conference that the fact of the impermissible scheme is uncontroverted".

This hits right at the heart of your point, here. If the NCAA ends up ruling it as not a rule violation, then there would be no "impermissible scheme" taking place! How can that be, then, something that undoubtedly affects the "integrity of competition"?

Isn’t that exactly at the… Isn’t that exactly at the heart of the loudest complaints, though? I won’t say there would be no benefit, but if the 3 other teams in the playoffs (and, in the case that this entire ordeal wasn’t approved by the staff, our own team as well) are given a green light to scout the other game and none do, it’s not a stretch to say that it wasn’t a large benefit.
What’s even more…

What’s even more illuminating to me is that it appears Georgia, TCU, and OSU didn’t seem to think this would lead to an advantage. If the reporting is accurate about all teams being made aware of the new rule and that they are unaware of having sent anyone, that would seem to indicate there isn’t a competitive advantage to doing something like this.

For the Record

This advice goes against the rules of the game and reddit in general. Karma farming and voting manipulation can negatively affect the team as well as endanger your reddit account.

Being more active on r/cfb is welcome, though. Just don't change your voting habits (do not vote based on flair, etc).

Astroturfing

I was pretty sure I witnessed astroturfing on Reddit and other platforms to try and sway opinion. This is looking pretty likely suddenly.

Here for the Cannot Connects!

Go Blue! What a shot!

Bad Post

For multiple reasons. Chatsports was NOT the FIRST to report it, as sites like Noles247 had posted this news prior. If you want to visit a place that rips off info from other places, presents it as their own (and yes, makes things up), you are fine to visit it. Just don't take it here.

No, "we" are against the website because of their unethical "journalism" in the name of clicks.

If there is news out there, it will be posted here soon from a verified source.

Very Likely Not

I couldn't find the link you provided (which I've used before). I must be looking at an old rule. My apologies!

I definitely do not see how he was ejected in this case.

More A than B

I think the more correct ruling would be 9-5-2-a. He was already on the field, and thus not in a substitute position. Rule a does not have the next game disqualification.

I agree with your position on how Metellus does not even meet the standards for participating anyways.

Confusion

I've seen similar comments such as this but I believe people are confusing the targetting ejection with a standard personal foul ejection. I don't believe that Metellus will have to miss any time this week.

I believe

That would have been a personal foul, which is an automatic first down.

I believe

It has been confirmed today that coach 2 in the FBI story was Rick Pitino. Looks nearly impossible to keep the money from his contract if that is the case.

Umm..

And 2 others as well, presumably.

Agree That and reddit. I don’t understand where that level of anger/dissonance comes from at all. Maybe the fans in person are better? (Not true either from what I’ve heard and experienced in my limited experience)
Turnover Machine

Blough's interception rate over his career is 3.5% compared with Speight's 2.3%. Including fumbles, Blough has dropped 8 and lost 4 compared with Speight's 6 and 3 (with less drop backs, admittedly)...

Umm...

Kids grow up rooting for Purdue...?

Good Stuff

As usual.

Any reason for doing the defense first this week?

Middle Click

If you open a new tab (at least with the middle click button), the next page should appear. I believe you have to do that for each page back you want to look though.

+1 From Me

For reminder to add BTN before the game in the morning. Been meaning to do it for a few weeks now but didn't have a huge reason to without a game on it.

Spectrum/Time Warner down here in SoCal. Quality/interface-wise I am not a huge fan but the customer service has been a lot better IMO than comcast both in CO and MI.

Understood But while it was definitely a bit emphatic, it wasn't overly so and it didn't force the ref to chase the ball which seems to be what the rule focuses on.
Spinning

Agree with your take on spinning the ball. I don't remember seeing that specifically called before and there are worse examples in every game of delay of game that it seemed incredible they called it.

If they are going to call it sometimes, fine don't do it at all. But that seemed like an incredibly weak call that a lot seemed to just accept as right.

Worth looking into

At least in California, they do not charge you more sales tax than the going local/state rate if purchased within a year from out of state.

I purchased a car in Colorado a few months ago before moving to Califonia and paid no extra taxes on it (because the taxes I paid in Colorado were greater than here in CA). I would be shocked if VA actually double charged like that.

Backwards

I've seen this in a few places but unless I'm wrong about where this is headed it feels like Cersei is building the 28-3 lead. Dany just got to Dragonstone and the first battles between the two have gone to Cersei but Dany still has the a lot left and it is just about half-time.

More Stats

Football Outsiders has us at the 49th best offensive line, slightly above average. Respectible pass rush ratings (~30th) and much worse running stats (63rd standard down line yards, 114th passing down line yards, 80th in opportunity rate, 64th in stuff rate, and what most are alluding to 41st in power success rate).

They just weren't a championship level line this year. The good news is they were good enough to be in every game at a minimum, so any improvement (and there is a lot of room still) should get them closer to that level.

Posted above

I posted both GIFs above, but reposting for visibility.

First GIF is the Samuel run in 2OT: https://gifs.com/gif/2016-michigan-at-ohio-state-2nd-half-zmQ62m

Second GIF is Weber pushing(?) Kinnel in the facemask after a play infront of 2 refs: https://gifs.com/gif/2016-michigan-at-ohio-state-2nd-half-lOXRAg

Better View

Looks like holds on Mccray to begin the play and then Lewis on the final cutback (Number 83?).

Weber in front of 2 refs, not sure if this is one you are talking about.

Quick Question

Thanks for putting something like this together. It's nice being able to somewhat look at the SOS of each team thus far.

Quick Question: I'm assuming that the first column of S&P stats are this weeks, and the second column is last weeks? It makes sense with the rest of your write-up, but I don't see anything that makes that apparent.

Comments

I'm not saying you are wrong necessarily, but I believe these stats are only looking at the 3 games thus far. So Michigan's game has 1/3rd of the weight. Additionally, a school like UNLV has also played UCLA (decent at least) and that was primarily with their backup QB. Utah has also had to play with their backup QB.

I fully expect these schools to be at the bottom as the season progresses, but I thought that might be worth bringing into the discussion.

That may be true

"If just 10,000 people bought a $1,000 car insurance policy, that's $10 million of new revenue per year."

That may be true, but what about the other hundreds of thousands who pay 2-3 times that for insurance? I would imagine that their insurance would have to drop to approximately $1000 as well, resulting in a huge loss of profit. Now, I am sure there would be more than 10,000 in new policies, as I'm sure you'd point out. But it's a bit more complex than what you are suggesting.

SF Bay too!

"I have attended athletic events and arts performances and traveled to meet alumni and donors in Detroit, Grand Rapids, New York, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area."

Where have I heard about the San Francisco Bay Area lately?

Makes sense

That's a good point. I had a feeling that I was being "blinded" by the Hoke years.

Good stuff as usual

If we have to jump to "Plan B" options, I think this would be one of our better options. I feel better knowing that Dres Anderson was unavailable beginning in October. I know their offense wasn't great even with him, but it seemed like they were falling apart down the stretch and I didn't know why.

I'm hesitant to bring in a guy who would need to rely heavily on an OC to get the offense running though. I'm sure that this is an effect from the last few years, but it is still something to think about. That being said, that is probably a reason he is a "Plan B".

Get Well

Good luck and get well, Ace.

Is it just me?

I don't care what Cowherd says, and I have doubted him from the start, but am I that views that as a sarcastic (albeit not funny) way to end the tweet? I am not teasing you. --> Although, Obvious name that won't happen because I think I'm funny.

Unless he said something on the radio, I don't see this as trolling but more of him trying too hard to be funny. He has already stated that he won't reveal who it is.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if you are all right and he was trolling Michigan fans hard, like he generally does.

Expectations

What were your expectations for Ryan Glasgow and Henry? Or are you that down on them?

We are 18th in rushing first downs per game with 7 per game and 16th in sack percentage. They aren't dominate, but given expectations I'm not sure what you are looking for from the DL.

Not even close

He would have to lose the next 25 games in a row in order for that to be true.

Tackles for loss, sacks

We are ranked 13th in the nation with 7.5 tackles for loss per game. That is the highest mark in the Big Ten, and I'm sure if you adjusted for tempo, we would be even higher.

Similarly, we are 29th in sacks per game. Adjusting for tempo, our sack percentage is actually 15th in the country, and behind just MSU in the Big Ten.

More of those would be great, I agree. But it's not as poor as you are making it seem.

Missing a lot of context

I am also in CLCIV 371 and you are leaving a large part of the context out.

I could be wrong, but I believe he was responding to a question about how much credibility should be given to reports that come out of social media, or some related question. Regardless, I'm almost positive this was during the Q&A session after his main lecture.

He began by bringing up the Harbaugh comments, but then went into how Pat Forde wrote an article about what Harbaugh had said. Forde wrote the entire article and then called Ablauf for comments, but Ablauf wasn't available at the time so it went to voicemail. Ablauf then called Forde back and began asking him about what he wanted to write about while at the same time researching what Forde was telling him. While on the phone, Ablauf found the article that Forde had written already published, even though Forde was telling Ablauf that he wasn't sure when his deadline was, etc. Basically, according to Ablauf, Forde wanted to be able to say he reached out to UM for comment before he published the story. Then he told us about how if Forde, or these other journalists, would have looked into the situation further, they would discover that this isn't anything new or something that nearly every school is doing, including Stanford (at 40% of their players).

This was part of a larger point he was making during his lecture about how media has changed. There is much less "work" done by the reporters today due to the culture that is the 24/7 newscycle. The goal is to be the first with a story, or write something that will generate clicks, regardless of how trivial a story might be.

In my opinion, he was more upset with Forde and the new form of media here than he was upset with Harbaugh.

Nickel Focus

Would that not have been due to the offenses that we faced early in the year? It has been a criticism in the past about not changing the defense to account for the rising spread offenses, and this is what we are seemingly doing about it. Perhaps going forward the 3-3-5 look could be used instead, and that could be what they were testing in this game.

That is true

I mentioned that in my post, but that is true. Some teams it affects more than others, but for the most part OSU has performed about where others have, with a few games being better and one being worse.

Maryland gave up 7.46 YPP to Syracuse and 6.43 to WV, while giving up 6.92 to OSU.

Cincinnati gave up 10.35(!!) YPP to Miami (YTM), 6.87 to Toledo, and 7.03 to OSU.

It will be interesting to see how that changes throughout the year though.

To Be Fair

OSU has faced the 49th, 69th, 88th, 108th, and 122nd ranked teams by Opponents yards per play. Those aren't exactly stout defenses they are doing it to.

Sure, those numbers are partially inflated by having faced OSU. And they do deserve credit for doing what they have done with everything they have lost. Meyer is a great offensive mind, and he knows how to use the talent he has, that's for sure.

For reference, we have faced the 7th, 16th, 19th, 36th, 72nd, 84th, and 127th ranked teams using the same metric.

Our offense is by no means good, and we don't have someone willing to use the talent available to their strengths, but we have faced much better defenses than OSU thus far.

PS: I would be leary of teaching already bad defenses a new scheme for just one game. I don't know much about how the Bear defense works, but if you take a team who can't play defense anyways and take a week to cram in a new defense, it doesn't seem like much good could happen.

Question

I think I disagree with your assessment of one of DGs throws.

M checks after seeing what Rutgers looks like. Probably a penalty as Norfleet backs off the line at the last second and isn't set, refs +1. Rutgers leaves a dig wide open, good protection, Gardner throws it behind Funchess, who spins, catches the ball, breaks a tackle, and gets a big gain. (MA, 2, protection 2/2, Funchess run +)

It looks to me like Gardner sees the LB underneath Funchchess' route and places it out of the range of the LB. Funchess still is able to adjust to it. If he tries to lead Funchess, I think it is picked or he would have to float it and leave Funchess open for a big hit.

Additionally

Also left out a 12-1 season with Ball State.

That is a good point

I hadn't thought about that effect. I think a lot of us were excited at the time based on UFR score difference between Miller and Glasgow, but that doesn't, as far as I know, take the line calls into account. It is certainly possible that in trying to be more physical, they actually hindered the offense.

Thanks! I added a new section taking your suggestion about sack percentage into account. I additionally added a graph looking at the first 6 games for adjusted ypc and sack percentage. I didn't have time to do a full analysis of it yet, and I'm not sure what exactly can be drawn from it yet, but it is there to look at.
Address

Should the address be 1011 S Main? I tried looking it up on google and that is the address I received.

Sorry if I'm not clear

Our views on Borges are the same as far as an OC goes. My point of contention is that he was a poor developer of QBs. This isn't the exact link I was looking for, but I think this demonstrates it as well:

http://mgoblog.com/diaries/who-al-borges-part-iv-new-hoke

The QBs seem to regress with each year in Borges' system. He starts out looking great, which points to his skill as an OC. But as he stays in one place, each year the QBs get worse.

I'm not saying Morris will be the next great QB, but I think after giving him a full year with an actual QB coach we will better be able to tell what he is.

Seriously?

You don't think a year of bad to no coaching can impact a player? I'm not saying anything about the development of anyone else, but I think the QBs can be excused at this point.

I'm looking for the thread I was talking about regarding Borges as a QB developer and I'll post it when I find it.

FWIW: I can't prove it to you because I joined only a few weeks ago, but I thought Borges, while not perfect in gameplanning, was pretty decent. I did think that Nussmeier would be an upgrade in both gameplanning (remains to be seen) and development though. I don't think there is any effect leftover from the offense one way or the other from Borges, but, again, I think that the QBs can rightfully be "excused" thus far.

Coaching I think it is a combo of the Borges QB coaching (or lack thereof) and the system. Those other QBs play in systems designed to take advantage of their strengths and minimize the offenses weaknesses. This again points to coaching. And I thought someone did a rundown of QBs under Borges and it was a horrendous.
