You need three element in your frame.

For example a player a ball and the basket.

Or in that case:
Hunter, the fans and the Crisler center.
The ceiling and the light are actually more of the "element" actually, it give a little bit of "cathedral look".

There is limited space in the rafters.

Each arenas have different rules ... But it is fair to assume there is max 4 spots.

99% of the time, this will be reserved for the house photographer.

Right now Crisler have three spots for strobes (3 strobes at each corners).

Two spots is allocated to Michigan Photography (the incredible people  working for the University).

In January, I was given the opportunity to buy the third spots as one photographer left the area.

As a Freshman, He might have believed that Crisler was silent due to the poor way the game start...
As no one seemed to have told him that was pretty standard for Nov~Dec late game vs Non conference poor opponent.

Also - Just in general I…

Also - Just in general I think most people would be bored about my Photographer's tribulation (not to mention my approximative English).

However, my DM on Twitter and Instagram are ALWAYS open.
And I always respond to my email when people have any questions about photography ... Yes, I am a "pro" but I also passionate by my work (Only reason I survived under grad and Grad school).

(I won't share my email here to avoid Spam bot but you can find on my website:
www.marc-gregor.com)

Hahah - Good questions…

Hahah - Good questions.

First of all, I am fairly new at photographing Football - It was only my 9th time covering a Michigan game and my 11th time overall if I include two HS game ... Over the last 6 Years.
I am at three game this season and it is rather unusual.

I took around 2K photos (~500 per QT). for that game.
The flicker Gallery is about 80 Images.
The video is 150 images (Mainly because for 4 or 5 actions I used the whole sequences of 10 to 20 Images vs Keeping one or two for the gallery).

To compare a little:
The NIU, I was closer to 800~900 per QT. And the Rutgers in between.

At the end, I usually keep 70 to 100 Photos (so less than 5% keeping - That is super low).

It can be explain by the fact that Michigan had more actions but also because I have improved and learned a lot from one game to the other (Seriously).

For comparison, I am nearing 100 games for Basketball over the last 5 years.
When I first photographed Basket I was taking around 4K photos each game for 30 to 40 Images.
Within the first 20 game I went down to 2K photos for 80~100 images.

My usual right now, for basketball is around 300 to 400 Frame per half (600~800 per games).
---> Unless Michigan win a title or something special happens (Remember that MSU-UM in Semi of the B1G in NYC....).
My keeping rate is a 80 images about (So 10% and that is very good).

Because Mgoblog is very unique ... When I am working for other outlets or team, I usually keep more like 30 to 40 images.
The reason is Mgoblog want more photos of the team defending for their analyze, and are more interested in some wider shot when most other people will want what is called "Iso" (Isolated players). So basically Mgoblog wants more variety in the gallery than almost any other media.

More context about the ration photos of keepers.

I think 10% is normal and good in sports. 5% is decent but "room for improvement". Anything below 2% is questionnable unless very unique setting (Like Surf, when you can get "block" easily by a waves, etc).

For example:
Senior / engagement photos, about 150 to 200 Images and keep 75.
For a full day Wedding around 1.5K photo and keep 500.
Business Events (Like Michigan hosting some VIP talk) around 35 images/ H keeping 25.
Portrait around 25 images keeping ... 24? :D

Mostly, you tends to over take for those because it is free / cheap and you just want to make sure someone was not blinking etc. So a lot's of photos are really for "safety".

Because of the "wild nature" for Family with younger kids / toddler about 500 images and keep 50.
So similar to sports.

Hope that helps.

And please excuses my French.

It was really funny reading…

It was really funny reading all your comments.
I just realized that my culture toward car is so different...

We needed a "second Car" for house hold... Can't afford it (especially after 2020 being disastrous and 2021 being on the same wave for my business).
But it was also baffling to see very old model going for crazy price (I saw a guy asking well over $5k for 20 years old car!).

So we bought a Cargo bike. I lost a few pounds.
And I am saving on the insurance.

We will see maybe in 2022 we will think of buying another car.

Also - Does it means Alabama will have issue at recruiting?

Thank you Matty - I send you a personal thank you note.

Yes, Phil is involved.
I…

Yes, Phil is involved.

I have the chance to work (before the pandemic) regularly for him... And it is the way he never talked about that kick but more about his brother (When he recall his time at Michigan) who really start the whole project.

I rapidly convinced Ron Bellamy and then it snowball ... With more than a dozen player from that season involved.

Hahaha - Yes.
The trailer…

Hahaha - Yes.

The trailer are a little unfinished I guess. The "tunnel" / "Winged Helmet" is a name of a sequence inside the documentary.
The future trailer should be less nebulous and more clear as they will be more general.

The documentary look at the season 2002 and divers event that happened, including the 44 Yards kick.
The project started with that kick actually, and talking to all the players I discovered that they all talked about how "The Team came together" to win that game. The same after Zia's accident (same season vs PSU).

The whole project is looking at how Coach Carr  (by the way he cared) but also the history of the program, led those guys that were really different to just create a deep bond that goes beyond the Football.

I choose the 2002 season because it seats in between the 99 & 00 and the 03 & 04 seasons.
I did not wanted to talk about "titles" (maybe a future project) but more about the human nature.

And all your comments are…

And all your comments are fair.
I actually appreciate those feedback deeply.

If the project was of no interest, or not done correctly you would not even take the time for it.

Noted. Noted. Noted!

Thank you.

Those two trailers are more…

Those two trailers are more of previews.

- You usually dont do it for the trailer. I really hesitate doing so, but in some case the person are on screen for such a small amount of time ... it is impossible to really read.

- The audio has been very basically synced and level (I will admit the 2nd trailer could have been done better). The movie is not done being edited. You usually pay someone to clean and edit when you are done doing the editing so you don't increase the cost of doing so.

- The color grading was extremely basic, because again the film is not done yet and I have not send the footage for that step. Because, well same than previously.

- That would be great to have B-rolls - But those comes with rights and those rights come with cost. Such B-roll average $200 to 300 a seconde. So I won't use the little money I have to pay for the trailers.

Thank you for the feedback, all of it is pretty obvious, I could have invested more to have higher quality trailer... But so far, I have been working pretty much alone and saved every penny I could.
(Well, I can not "spare no expense" - Especially after 2020 catastrophic year were I lost 88% of my income).

To give an idea, so far all the movie have been done from my personal money (I have spend around $5K ~6k). And I am not even including the 2 years of works I have invested (in research and preparation and now editing).

The final movie should have a 90min running time about - Such project have an average cost in the $150~300K. I am trying to make it happen with 10% of that amount.
Those preview is a teaser to see and gage the interest for my project.

If you want to have a more detailed idea of the overall cost:
