Did you miss the part where…

Did you miss the part where Rod Moore is basically out for the year? We won't have the best defense again, probably top 10 still but definitely not a generational one like last year.

This is probably a better…

This is probably a better video... I can't help with your shitty post title though.

Jobu gives and Jobu takes…

Jobu gives and Jobu takes away.

Except this dude HAS been an…

Except this dude HAS been an assistant coach.

I've probably learned more…

I've probably learned more off the Mgoblog board than I did in college. Of course, I didn't go to Michigan so that plays a factor.

I'm very excited to see how…

I'm very excited to see how he recruits and develops here. Clearly he knows what he's doing if he can build FAU to be really good KenPom teams and then make a Final Four on top of that.

Outside of bringing John…

Outside of bringing John Beilein back I think this is about as good a hire as we could expect. Even more impressive that Warde pulled this one off.

247 has some more details on the process - it's paywalled, but gist is Warde actually had his shit together LAST year and Dusty May was on his radar even before he made the Final Four.

Historically they are a…

Historically they are a better basketball program than Michigan and is a basketball school. Louisville is probably a top ten basketball job, Michigan is probably top 20 - 25.

My favorite was the OSU guy…

My favorite was the OSU guy on Twitter saying May is just a flash in the pan and it was a bad hire. Would love to see the alternate universe tweets if they had gotten May.

Paywalled on 247, but gist…

Paywalled on 247, but gist is Beilein was one of Warde's advisors and made the trip to sit down with May and Warde. Coach Beilein truly is a gift to Michigan basketball.

Any reason to believe we…

Any reason to believe we didn't at least kick the tires?

Do we even have any players…

Do we even have any players left to 'stay'?

I was on the Medved wagon…

I was on the Medved wagon with Brian but I am happy with Dusty May.

Turned in 6 straight winning…

Turned in 6 straight winning seasons at a place that 4 in the previous 17? And the last two (sans an early tourney out) looked pretty dang good.

I think this guy can coach. If he can take over a dumpster fire like FAU, I think he'll be fine here. Curious to see if he can bring any of his guys with him to help 'speed up' the transition here.

Are they on the NBA's radar…

Are they on the NBA's radar now? If not, seems likely he could get one or two of them to come with.

UCLA in 1995 was my first…

UCLA in 1995 was my first bracket win - the O'Bannon brothers and Tyus Edney were quite the team to watch.

Who exactly has Mays landed…

Who exactly has May landed that piques your interest? Is the CUSA/AAC really a higher level than the MWC these days?

May's recruiting classes since 2020 have been: 179, 107, 103 and 129 per the 247 composite. That doesn't look like higher level recruiting to me.

Medved has brought in: 126, 128, 138 and 129 in that span. Looks like 2023 was a tie in rankings? Those look basically the same to me as far as recruiting levels at schools that are not power schools or in power conferences.

Medved also has twice the experience as May - that gives him the nod in my book.

Would not be upset with either of them though, but right now May just feels like the popular choice based off one year, a Final Four is nothing to slouch at but other than he hasn't done much. Abdur-Rahim feels like too much of an up and comer to me. We're not an elite hoops school but I think we can get an established guy. I'd go Medved, May and then Devries.

I'd prefer we get an…

That may be the path for him eventually (analyst to on-field) but I'd prefer we get an experienced DL coach now.

Who doesn't love more head?…

Who doesn't love more head? Oh, you mean the school?

I would not be unhappy with…

I would not be unhappy with Dusty May, but Brian's reasoning behind Medved's more sustained success / track record has me on board with Medved as #1 and May as #2.

I love Sam's optimism but Greg McDermott, really? I'd be absolutely shocked if he came here, moreso than Shaka Smart even. Kick the tires cuz you have to, but that feels as likely as Urban Meyer coming on as our new DL coach.

I was gonna say he's too old…

I was gonna say he's too old, then I looked it up and he's only 56. For some reason I thought he was pushing 70. Dude has not aged well haha.

Make it super simple:

Read…

Make it super simple:

Read 1 - RPO

Read 2 - (assuming a keep) #1 receiving option

Read 3 - #1 receiving option not open, run

As the season goes on you can give him more reads in the passing game but I think above would be more than enough to get us to Columbus at 9-2 or so.

As a, non-native, resident…

As a, non-native, resident of Georgia I would venture a guess that Pecan Pie was not 'most searched' here simply because everyone already has a family recipe for it.

A bigger name? Yes.

Neg…

A bigger name? Yes.

Neg away, but I led off my comment with GREAT HIRE. I just don't think it's "jaw dropping" to get a rival's assistant coach.

I'm not mad about it, but I…

I'm not mad about it, but I expected it to be a bigger name, like some RB whisperer or something. OSU hasn't exactly thrilled me with their RB play lately, but I said great hire and I do expect him to be great on the recruiting trail.

And no, I didn't think it was a jaw dropping hire when OSU got Mattison.

Neg away.

If we're a burning tire fire…

If we're a burning tire fire I'd be very curious to hear what OSU is now.

Great hire, by all accounts…

Great hire, by all accounts dude is a stud recruiter. But this isn't exactly the "jaw dropping" hire Sam Webb made it out to be on 247 - like many I am done paying for "insider" information.

Caveat: I am not as…

Caveat: I am not as knowledgeable about the basketball team as I am about football.

1.) I cannot speak to this but he clearly cannot do this at the level of Beilein.

2.) It could be that coming from the NBA Juwan was used to having all-world talent and being able to rely on superstars, who for the most part are training with their own coaches outside of practice/team activities. I can see how Juwan would be lacking the skill in this department.

3.) Similar to #2, with the nature of college sports you have a constant influx of new talent of wildly varying degrees, especially in this day and age of NIL and the portal (you won't have stacked teams full of future NBA stars like you once did). This ties into relationships and culture but it feels sort of like RichRod trying to put square pegs into round holes on day 1 instead of working with what he had and then phasing in what he wanted once he got his players - but Juwan has his players so there seems to be no logic for his failure here.

4.) I don't get this, you'd think a former college and NBA player would have a better ability to connect and form good relationships with his players and create a great culture.

Just my thoughts based on what I've seen of the team and read here.

Can McBurrows play CB though…

I don't doubt Moore can be more impactful than McBurrows at Nickel, but can McBurrows play CB though? That's what my concern is. He was seemingly prepping to play Nickel, which is a very different role than outside CB. Personally, I was hoping DJ Waller would be able to fill the outside CB role, he's got some great size and seems like he has the inside track to the spot.

Hopefully, he can move outside without any issues, but like you said either way it gives us some flexibility.

(No subject)

I'm happy it looks like…

I'm happy it looks like Johnson is coming back but it doesn't move the needle for my expectations for this defense. He was becoming a bigger contributor near the end, but I'd be much more excited if we had been able to keep Sabb.

I think the key thing to remember is that last year's defense was historically great, for anyone, ever. So even IF we field another elite defense there will still be drop off.

I'd be really excited if we were getting back another DL for the rotation - as Brian and Seth have said numerous times, this was a big factor to their success, being fresh all the time.

Don't get me wrong, I think this could still be a top 5 defense but when you were the 2nd greatest defense of "all-time" anything less is gonna be a sizable step back.

Bad days happen to everyone,…

Bad days happen to everyone, and you wouldn't want a single bad day to detract from a career's worth of work.

Agreed. But I'm just not sold on anyone outside of MHJ in this draft. I know Caleb Williams is seen as the consensus #1 QB but I don't see it. I think Williams, Maye and Daniels all look about the same to me and then obvious bias toward JJ but I think he has a great chance to be better than any of those three.

I also lumped in team interviews with participating, so if we're just talking on-field drills then ya'll have changed my mind.

Arm strength is such an…

Arm strength is such an overrated metric for QB's. I really do wish him the best of luck in the NFL, but I just don't think he's gonna be a good NFL player.

Except he's a DE, so that…

Except he's a DE, so that won't help depth at nose.

I think it's too early to…

I think it's too early to tell for Morgan. The others seem about right to me though.

Sorry, not trying to be rude…

Sorry, not trying to be rude just being honest Ohio State is no longer on Michigan's level.

At the moment, maybe not. But let's not act like they did and just assume they will never catch up. They are loaded with elite talent and basically beat everyone but Michigan the past few years. Missouri was an extreme outlier as far as I am concerned. They will be a locked in team come November and I'm not so sure we should count that as an automatic W given all we've lost this offseason (to the NFL).

Are those the only guys who…

Are those the only guys who are not participating? Williams and Harrison I get, but outside of those two not so sure.

I think Maye and Daniels could separate themselves from one another given a good combine, maybe that extra slot or two above doesn't matter. By not participating it kinda gives off a vibe of "I'm more worried I won't show out and it'll hurt my stock".. just my opinion.

I'd rely more on game film…

I'd rely more on game film than workout results (NFL combine). The combine results are a nice extra data point to add but you don't play football in shorts and t-shirts, so it would not count for much in my mind as a hypothetical GM.

If a player does not want to participate in workouts, it feels like a potential red flag but whatever. If they do not participate in any interviews that would be a major red flag to me.

As far as our OL being years ahead - I think that is mostly a Harbaugh/Moore thing. The extra half season during Covid probably had a minimal impact. I think it should be sustainable with Moore at the helm.

And with all that extra beef…

And with all that extra beef he probably would not have run a 4.21.

My first thought when seeing…

My first thought when seeing "FB" was, 'who the hell else has a fullback these days?'

So I guess Joe Milton doesn…

So I guess Joe Milton doesn't have a "plus arm" then either?

The problem is we don't hear…

The problem is we don't hear what the NFL scouts are thinking. All we hear are the dipshit opinions of talking heads like Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay, neither of whom ever coached or scouted football players.

I'd imagine the draft boards of teams is rather different than what the pundits think. Outside of maybe "can't miss" prospects.

I am sorry I can only give…

I am sorry I can only give this one upvote.

There's been no indication…

There's been no indication that Herbert was not offered a shit ton of money by Sherrone Moore to stay. Nor has there been anything that might lead any rational person to believe it was just about money (a lot with the Chargers or not enough with Michigan).

People leave good jobs for other opportunities all the time. Maybe he just really likes working for Harbaugh and felt he could be the first S&C coach in the NFL to be a major impact on his franchise.

I am so tired of the narrative that if someone leaves it's cuz Michigan wasn't willing to pony up. Like I tell my kids all the time, "just because you can afford something, does not mean it's a wise idea to buy it."

 If Davis beats out Tuttle,…

If Davis beats out Tuttle, who has an obvious floor of "average B1G starter"...that is a good sign.

Fair point, however, I'd still prefer the guy with (many) years of college experience and maturity vs. the 18-yr old kid. No matter how talented he is.

If a true freshman beats everyone else out he's either Trevor Lawrence or everyone else sucks. Even freshman JJ didn't beat out Cade McNamara. Hell, even Andrew Luck sat as a true freshman.

I won't be upset if Davis wins the job, but I'd honestly feel it was more his competition was weak than he was just that good. There's a reason he fell so far in the recruiting rankings, he's not Trevor Lawrence.

To be clear: I think Jadyn Davis is gonna be a really good QB for us. I just don't think it's gonna be in 2024.

We don't know that yet. I…

We don't know that yet. I would not expect a HS coach to be a brilliant tactician. Bellamy has now been a college coach for a few years, I'd venture to guess that he's learned a thing or two.

Is is an ideal title to give him? Who knows, also who cares. Moore was an excellent OC for us and his hands will be all over the game plans. If he named Bellamy OC, then yes I would be worried but it's likely just another title to reward him and get him a new 'role' to get more experience.

EDIT: Found this on 247 (not paywalled) about our OL guys being years ahead of everyone else. Moore was never an OL coach before, and that turned out pretty well. Let's just wait and see what Bellamy does before we call this a bad idea.

“I was talking to an offensive line coach this morning who’s met with just about everyone who’s come through here this year. And he said the Michigan guys are like two years ahead of everybody in terms of their knowledge, their understanding, their maturity,” Jeremiah said.

Not sure who Stanford…

Not sure who Stanford replaced Turley with, but Justin Tress has been at Michigan since 2018 (when Herbert came). And as an added bonus, he worked under Herbert at Arkansas for two years. 8 years under Herbert says it's a pretty good bet that Tress will continue what Herbert built. I'm not so worried about a drop off here.

Most HS offenses are pretty…

Most HS offenses are pretty basic though.

If Jadyn Davis is starting…

If Jadyn Davis is starting we're in big trouble. I hope one of Denegal or Orji step up - they seem to have the highest (realistic in 2024) ceilings of all the QB's we have on the roster.

I do get a vibe that when…

I do get a vibe that when his first read isn't there he rushes to the checkdown

Sounds like Donovan Edwards might lead this team in receptions, and I'm 100% fine with that.
