I'm 47, learned how to snowboard in my 20's, and went for the first time in 7 years in December.  I wasn't falling much, but was still almost paralyzed by day three (not joking).  Snowboarding is a young man's thing because you have to sit down to get the snowboard on, and standing up from that fully sitting position is really hard past a point in mid-life.  And if you're only an intermediate snowboarder, at least a few falls are inevitable, and it hurts.  I can't imagine learning in my 40's - I would have almost certainly broke something.

He's Cade McNamara, but faster!

Clinkscale leaving on the…

Clinkscale leaving on the same day we hire an Associate AD who will likely coordinate NIL is a signal of the the future of college football.  It's going to be far less rah-rah super recruiting position coaches and far more NIL fund raisers and administrators.

Most of the folks here at…

Most of the folks here at Mgoblog were disappointed that he was our DT in that class and were worried that we'd have to keep playing Jordan Glasgow at DT.  I hope we've all learned to trust the scouting of the coaches now...

Keith Jackson’s voice on…

Keith Jackson’s voice on YouTube calling games from the 90s is about the most direct and poignant source of nostalgia that I have.  He brought atmosphere and energy to every game without ever making it about him.  Truly an American legend.

They should hire Lou Holtz…

They should hire Lou Holtz just to give him one chance to kick Ryan Day's ass in a playoff game

Amazing!  Fuck being an adult, I'm sleeping in my Hutchinson jersey tonight.

Am I the only one who is…

Am I the only one who is totally baffled, and yet relieved, at the lack of Penix jokes on Mgoblog all week?  For years people found any excuse for 'purple helmet' Penix jokes.  Everyone got a case of the nerves?

For everyone who downvoted…

For everyone who downvoted me for saying Maalik Murphy is basically the same guy as Jayden Denegal, here are the schools Murphy is visiting: Baylor, Duke and Oregon State.  Watch his game tape on Youtube, he just isn't all that good.  He was never going to be the guy at a school like Texas, Ohio State or Michigan:

Greg Biggins on X: "Former #Texas QB Maalik Murphy is one of the most coveted signal callers in the transfer portal and he has scheduled a trio of official visits starting with #Duke later today https://t.co/jWFkJsnIRL https://t.co/6Ib8kvFQ5y" / X (twitter.com)

He looks like Jayden Denegal…

He looks like Jayden Denegal to me.  He's 6'5" with kind of funny mechanics and average looking athleticism for a modern college QB.  Same class too.

McCord was #8 in QBR this…

McCord was #8 in QBR this year, Cam Ward was #50.  They're not getting a clear upgrade unless JJ McCarthy or Carson Beck transfers in:

This recruiting class at…

This recruiting class at Ohio is on the verge of never beating Michigan.  How wild is that?

Did y'all really think we…

Did y'all really think we were going to lose this one?  Of course I was looking forward to next year.

This Ohio team is different…

This Ohio team is different than the last couple of years.  McCord is a check down artist at heart and there’s no way he wants to get hit more than a couple of times.  I’m not saying we go back to the Don Brown days but we’ll need to take some chances to get McCord out of rhythm.  At any rate, Minter is awesome so I’ll sleep Good Friday night.

I meant "talent" as in …

I meant "talent" as in "athleticism" or "potential" and of course we're developing players better.  But at times Josh Wallace will be covering Egbuka and Barnhart will be blocking JTT and their guys are just phenomenal athletes.

Harbaugh has made so many…

Harbaugh has made so many changes in the last couple of years.  Remember how beat down guys like Winovich, Bush and Gary were by the Ohio State game?  He brought in new coaches, toned down the intensity early in the year, started holding back big sections of the play book, fired back in terms of shenanigans with signals and scouting, etc.  At some point they pissed him off and he decided to focus everything on this one game.  They still have the superior talent but they haven't proven yet that they can handle 100% Harbaugh.

This sets up my best case…

This sets up my best case scenario where Sherrone runs the ball 70 straight times at OSU and we blow them out with an interim coach.

Yeah, sounds like our worst…

Yeah, sounds like our worst case scenario now is Carter Smith, which is pretty cool.

I don't see ND signing up…

I don't see ND signing up for a conference where the standing rule is "beat Ohio twice in a row and have a private investigation launched against you."  That's why Michigan proving that Ohio State in some way sponsored the investigation is so critical.  At that point, would Penn State sign up to be the "beat Ohio, get investigated" team?  Or do they leave the Big10 too?

Texas A&M must have one of…

Texas A&M must have one of the five most delusional fan bases in college football, which they're perception of their program is completely divorced from reality.  Something like:

1. Texas A&M

2. Tennesee

3. Penn State

4. Nebraska

5. Virginia Tech

The right answer is…

The right answer is something like "engaging in a coordinated effort with the NCAA to clarify rules around advance scouting while developing a plan to introduce in-helmet communications for the 2024 season."

If their action is targeted specifically at Michigan, Michigan should go nuclear.  Just leak everything we have on OSU and everyone in the conference and start evaluating alternatives in the off season.

I've heard that they are…

I've heard that they are insisting on a No Masturbation clause in the contract.

Michigan to the ACC would be…

Michigan to the ACC would be great because half of the people who grew up in Michigan live in ACC territory now anyway.  A Michigan-UNC game in Chapel Hill would be like 25% Michigan fans.  And I'd take a annual rivalry with Notre Dame over OSU or MSU at this point.  When your "rivalries" become more about court proceedings than football, it's time to move on.

So Matt Weiss supposedly had…

So Matt Weiss supposedly had kiddie porn and OSU practice tape on his computer and he hasn’t  been charged with the kiddie porn thing and he was too stupid to erase the practice footage and he got caught after the OSU game (to do what exactly?).  Oh, and only OSU fans know about it.  OK.

I live about an hour from…

I live about an hour from Athens, GA if anybody needs a favor.  Let’s set our sights a little higher now.

The 2016 team will always be…

The 2016 team will always be special to me because of the incredible D line, highlighted by Chris Wormley stuffing JT Barrett on fourth and short for the win in Columbus.  But, yeah, the 2023 offense is miles ahead of that group.

They're -6 in turnover…

They're -6 in turnover margin, so they've had some back luck.  And they have a pretty good D line, O line and running back.  Houser is a decently mobile guy with a big arm.  I'm not saying they have any real chance of beating us, but no one should be surprised if this is a contested game in the second half.

Back in the BPONE days of…

Back in the BPONE days of Don Brown I wouldn't even celebrate a third down stop for a few seconds, waiting to see if there was a flag.  I'm slowing coming around to celebrating third down stops in real time.  The Harbaugh healing is real.

Awesome.

I will care about Michigan…

I will care about Michigan State football for approximately one week this year.  This isn't that week.

My fear level of every team…

My fear level of every team in the Big Ten is 5 or less, and then my fear of Harbaugh leaving in the offseason is a 9

It would be interesting to…

It would be interesting to see how they change that offense if their tackles can't pass protect.  Especially since they recruit QBs who aren't mobile.

I live in Greenville, SC and…

I live in Greenville, SC and recruit at area schools as part of my job.  Clemson is generally seen as a school on the rise, and they're attracting a lot of kids from the east coast who want better weather,  a reasonable cost and a more conservative college culture.  In my professional area, they are head and shoulders above the University of South Carolina and my perception is that the kids are a little smarter than what you'd find at Michigan State.

The student body is more culturally conservative than with current B10 schools, but the campus is nice and people down here LOVE college football because there are no professional teams in the state.  Clemson doesn't really have a hated rival in the ACC, and I their fan base would warm up pretty quickly to the move.  I'm a little biased but I think it'd be good for both sides.

It's a smart move on their…

It's a smart move on their part really, and especially if we didn't pursue other CBs as aggressively thinking he might commit.

I always wonder how much the dual nationals are going to show up in world cup qualifiers in Central America on a Tuesday night, BUT we don't have to qualify in 2026.  He has three years to build chemistry with the team and he should be peaking in 2026.  This definitely raises our ceiling and gives depth in front of Pepi.   Huge get for the USMNT.

It will still be easier than…

It will still be easier than our schedule as of a few years ago when we had Norte Dame on the schedule and Wisconsin was our permanent rival.  We’ll just need to make sure the non conference games are cupcakes.  Honestly our schedule would still be easier than most SEC schedules.

Texas spent $280K on a recruiting visit for Arch Manning but I guess there were no hamburgers involved.  Anyway, as for Jim, he’s never stayed in one place very long.  If he stays at Michigan it will be because the NFL won’t take him back.  He’s just a guy who leaves, like what Larry Brown was to basketball.

Replay is so messed up in…

Replay is so messed up in college football now.  It's so far away from "clear and obvious errors" overturned by "indisputable visual evidence."  They've just introduced a whole new way for officiating errors to happen and for officials to control and influence the game.  Put it on the list of things the NCAA should fix, but probably won't.

Out of curiosity I signed up for Elle Johnson's OnlyFans page and if you DM her about Michigan games she has actually OK takes.  She's not going to compete with Seth and Brian, but she has opinions like, "they need to start better in the first half."  So not a bad package overall IMO.

With Hewlett, Mason Curtis…

With Hewlett, Mason Curtis and Ishmail, Michigan seems to be prioritizing tall LBs.  I guess that’s a zone thing?  Because tall LBs are harder to throw over?  Maybe we’re moving to LBs who are third down coverage specialists like Uche but LBs?

Quote from his coach on 247:…

Quote from his coach on 247:

"He's really grown as a player. Last year, he started coming on towards the end of the year on film from the Marist game to the beginning of the playoffs, then he really wreaked havoc this year. He came in and changed everything. Culturally, he was ‘how do I watch film properly?’ He concentrated on technique and run fits. He would always go to camps and learn pass rush stuff, so he had done a lot of that but as far as being a run defender, he was absolutely amazing. He single handedly changed our defense for the better and kept us in games we wouldn’t have been in without him. He altered games. Against Joliet Catholic, he was not only great in that game against a four-star Northwestern commit on the offensive line but he also blocked a field goal to get us into overtime and eventually win that game. He’s a good kid from a great family – his younger brother is an absolute stud for us also – and he’s just been awesome. Our strength coach, who is a former D1 guy, talked to me preseason about this 2023 class and this was the first time they had a full off-season in the weight room because of Covid restrictions. That obviously helps. He gained weight, got up to 293 pounds and doesn’t look like it whatsoever. With his physical growth as well as his mental maturation of leadership too, he’s still not even close to his potential. I’ve been fortunate to coach in Texas and out in Southern California and this guy has no idea what his potential is. He has no clue." - Casey Quedenfeld, Chicago Brother Rice head coach
