Sports radio in Minneapolis…

Sports radio in Minneapolis indicates it was a zoom call and more exploratory in nature.  Not saying he isnt going but its not like he flew out to do it in person.  If nothing else, I would expect a second interview before he gets hired.  No one is picking coaches over zoom anymore

I only have one question -…

I only have one question - have people in Ohio started buying Michigan jerseys yet?  That is when things will have really changed

sorry if this meme is too dated

Not saying I agree with any of this but replacing “Jim” with “Harbaugh” makes it flow much better at the end

Any bowl where we dont play…

Any bowl where we dont play Florida again is the right bowl

I agree with this and am…

I agree with this and am willing to give JH all the rope he wants - until recruiting starts falling off.  If it looks like he or his staff fall below the current level they have set (I am not asking for miracles) then I think you have to bring in someone who can provide some new energy and at least temporarily sell hope and up the talent level. The death spiral in recruiting at the end of the Lloyd years when he didnt want to be here and it showed in recruiting set the table for the shit buffet of the next decade plus.  I think Lloyd was great and am not saying he is responsible for everything that happened after he left but when the coach gets tired of climbing trees and pounding the pavement looking for talent, it is time to bring in a new coach

This is an excellent point…

This is an excellent point and why the gap has widened in talent over the past 7 years.  The state of Ohio hasnt improved in terms of generating talent since Urban took over - it has probably actually decline a bit.  He put in place the SEC piping to direct money and other benefits to bring in consistent levels of elite talent.  Tatoogate and all the small time shit that Tressel used to do pales in comparison to what is down there now.  If we are going to get rid of Harbaugh (not something I am in favor of) you need an SEC coach like Kirby Smart to take over the reins and construct a similar infrastructure.  Honestly, I dont give a crap what their X's and O's credentials are.  Look at Dabo - you need a CEO style coach that can line up the bagmen, bring in recruits, and act as a motivator.  If they actually know anything about football I guess that is a plus too

This needs to be upvoted…

This needs to be upvoted more and is probably the most salient point of this thread.  Their program over the past 15-20 years has just been materially better than ours in terms of talent and coaching.  In many of those games they were also favored by large margins.  Given that we are the last game and they are maniacal about preparing for us, there is no ability to slip under the radar or catch them at anything lest than their best.  Also, they are generally playing for the Big East title, chance at a national title, etc.  Just provides that much more incentive for them.  We have generally playing for pride during that period

This is great - thank you for linking!  Gif needs to be made and added tot he ones above.

Totally agree firing him…

Totally agree firing him today is not the answer and the options to replace him are not that great. That said, what I saw on Saturday was very discouraging.  It seems as though Jim is lost, doesn't have a lot of passion and it is being reflected in the on field product and player attitudes.  If this malaise isn't corrected in the near to medium term replacing Harbaugh needs to become a serious for consideration, if for no other reason that if players arent buying in, recruiting will tank and the problems will become much more systemic and longer lasting.

In that scenario, an inferior coach that has enthusiasm and players buying in is a better option that holding onto the current coaching staff.

This, this - a thousand times this!  Thanks for making me laugh.  Hands down the best quote in a press conference ever.  Even beats "Playoffs?!" in my humble opinion.

I am irrationally afraid…

I am irrationally afraid that this is going to be closer than expected because of the chances the team is already looking ahead to OSU and the massive flood of positive coverage from the media over the past 7 days.  I doubt that happens given the focus shown to date but there is something about this game that gives me a bad vibe.

The Soviets kept extensive…

The Soviets kept extensive records too which have recently been released to the public and were extensively analyzed to come up with the numbers in the book mentioned above.  I am not sure exactly what your point was but hand waving about the “iron curtain” and saying records don’t exist when they do is a little intellectually lazy.  No one will ever know exactly how many people the Nazi’s killed  either since outside of Gernmany the record keeping for slaughtering civilians in occupied territories was far less rigorous.

Can’t access on my phone -…

Can’t access on my phone - is this just for the war years or does it also include the Ukrainian famines and fall-out from collectivization?  Recently red a new history on that and they were saying old numbers (still in the millions) were likely light given new research into mortality figures and prior made up census numbers the Soviets used to conceal drop in population.  All sourced with primary material and actual Soviet / Ukrainian records

EDIT:  Name of the book is “Red Famine”

The money cannon is an…

The money cannon is an awesome thing to behold. Unique intersection of i) a person who has provided tons of thoughtful analysis and entertaining writing, ii) an online community of individuals who actually care about someone else and appreciate the work Ace put in relative to the first point, and iii) a group of people with the economic means to contribute to a truly worthy cause.

Basically three things that you won’t find on RCMB

This is some primo shit right here.  Not only is the analysis great, but the presentation is easy to follow and very concise.

I’m not sure but I do know

I’m not sure but I do know this:

If someone asks you if you’re a god, you say yes!

I am not sure why someone

I am not sure why someone downvoted you as you are 100% correct. The fact that Jesus is of the same substance is of the Father and Holy Spirit is well trodden theological ground and consumed the first 1000 years of Christian history. See Arianism, the Monophysites and many others. Not saying which definition is right but the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox faiths are all pretty clear on this point, even if they differ greatly on others. Oh, throw in the Anglican Church too!

Generally agree but the drop

Generally agree but the drop and two overthrows were on a drive we ultimately scored a touchdown on

I would say it is more the

I would say it is more the homerism and blind optimism of Michigan fans and the number of them that are out there and betting on games.  If this is underdog as determined by point spread, the fact that people tend to irrationally bet on Michigan may be why we lose so much as the "underdog", i.e. there may be games where we are -1  to -4 that we should actually be +1 to +4.  We win those games as a "favorite" but should have actually been an underdog

I am not asking the OP to do this since this is already great info but it would be interesting to see records by banded point spreads (+1 to +4, +5 to +10, +11 to +15, etc.).

Maybe this statistic is indirect (or direct) evidence that you should always adjust spreads for the irrationality of Michigan fans when wagering on the team

EDIT:

Sorry - should have added seeing records on the other side as well (-1 to -4, -5 to -10, etc.)

Isn’t electing to kick for

Wow - that is amazing on

The dreaded double post.  My first one!

Question for the board - what is the next highest annual salary for a man named Jimbo?  $20k? $30k? Apologies in advance to any Jimbo's out there who may be offended by these posts...

Wow - that is amazing on

Wow - that is amazing on multiple fronts.  The fact that a man named "Jimbo" has a buyout of $40mm for anything just proves that this is the greatest country in the world.  Dreams really can come true

I am not a Gopher fan per se

I am not a Gopher fan per se but do attend the home games because I live in Minneapolis and my 8-year old daughter loves college football.

I can state for the record that I am ecstatic he was fired and was planning to not renew my tickets of 6 years if he wasnt.  Good riddance

Apparently the standard now

Apparently the standard now is just losing closely given how bad the hoke / rrod years. If anyone thinks losing 3 games with a team that has 18 senior starters and an amazing defense is good enough they have had their expectation bar set down to nearly being on the floor

This post checks a lot of

This post checks a lot of boxes for me. Harbaugh is a bit of a choker. Inability to close out games and get first downs has been endemic the last two years. I do not understand not taking timeouts at the end of games either. If peters isn't a major upgrade at qb next year will be ugly - no way the D will be anywhere near this good next year

Forgot to mention Shelby

Forgot to mention Shelby Foote's Civil War books. Excellent stuff and was the source material for Ken Burns Civil War documentary

Anything by William

Anything by William Manchester. His three volume biography of Churchill ("Last Lion") is great but my favorite is "The Arms of Krupp". Amazing writing style, incredibly easy to read (even on dense topics) and heavy citing of primary source material

Yes, yes!  Lord, please make

Yes, yes!  Lord, please make this happen.  Then have Charlie hire Mangino as his OC

I guess if he is guaranteed

I guess if he is guaranteed the money no matter what sort of work product he turns out he could rationalize it as being closer to a million dollar payout.  That bit of mental gymnastics aside, when you present value the future installments you still dont get anywhere close to the headline number.

I am sure I will be negged

I am sure I will be negged and am not saying this is the "real" reason he is retiring but the football team has been the focus of a large number of sexual assault / harrasment allegations recently (see link below from the Star Tribune).  Administrators within the university even brought their concerns to the ex-AD Norwood Teague.  Maybe this was a contributing factor to creating stress / health problems but the sudden departure is a bit odd.

http://www.startribune.com/university-of-minnesota-football-players-accused-of-sexual-assault-harassment-and-retaliation/333075411/

Snippet of from the article:

"Kimberly Hewitt, the school’s director of equal opportunity and affirmative action, said in a July 16 e-mail to then-athletic director Norwood Teague that her office had concerns regarding complaints about football players, including two reports of sexual assault “committed by individual players,” two reports of sexual harassment involving “groups of football players” and a report of retaliation of involving “a group of football players.”

The e-mail was obtained Wednesday through a records request by the Star Tribune. In an interview Thursday, Hewitt said the concerns were raised over the course of the 2014-15 academic year. She refused to be more specific, saying that doing so could compromise student privacy. She declined to say how many players were involved, the number of alleged victims, where the alleged incidents occurred or to provide any other details. No police reports were filed, a university spokesman said."

I am going with Demry Croft from MN. His stock apparently has been rising and he is very gettable

If he is going to be

If he is going to be retained, Hackett at least owes us a spectacle that will garner national attention (think Brandon).  For instance, he could fire Hoke, run a national "search" and then re-hire him as the best available candidate.  Now that is what I call a "wow!" experience.

Are you high? Mattison's

Are you high? Mattison's defenses work against bad Big 10 teams and that is about it. Gets shredded by modern offenses
