I went to Moe's last Friday and went apesh*t.  Bought enough M gear to last me through the fall and winter.  It was a wonderful shopping excursion and even better weekend.  Except Saturday.

I don't remember what happened on Saturday.  I eternalsunshine'd that entire day.

When discussing Rudock, I pulled up his stats and realized he hasn't thrown a TD in 9 quarters (since Maryland) and has thrown for fewer yards in successive games since BYU. The rest of his numbers for the year look like Rembrandt's The Game Manager. A lot of the low numbers are warped by the strong defense and ability to burn the clock, but I think this is working against him.

Rudock has not had timing and/or accuracy on downfield passes all season yet by the 2nd half every game since Utah, it has been unnecessary. In a way, the success has limited his reps. Through his first seven games at Iowa last year he had 1564 yards and 10 TDs, and that included one game he didn't play the second half. Through seven this year he has 1303 and 5 TDs.

With that said, Rudock also hasn't thrown a pick since Maryland and has done a great job of, well, managing the game. I don't know what is wrong - maybe it is a lack of confidence or extreme conservatism, lack of eligible competition pushing him, new system, players, etc. or some combination of many things but something just doesn't seem right.

I really hope that it is really just a long con on OSU, and we'll just see Rudock connecting on every deep ball because they don't respect the pass.

My 2 cents with Rudock as you bring up good points.....for the most part, he seems CCC (calm, cool, collected), but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a little loss of confidence deep down. A 2 year starter at Iowa, told he would not be the starter going into his 5th year. He is benched for a more mobile qb with a better arm, and are now 6-0 (not all due to qb play). I remember reading an article around the time of the transfer where some iowa players had mostly positive things to say about him, but the one knock was his conservatism. TBH, the iowa offense was kind of stale, but I'm not putting that all on Rudock. He feels he can start and tranfers, which in itself is a great show of confidence, but in all honesty lands in a great situation here at Michigan. The only qb on the roster with any game experience is Shane, who wasn't exactly lights out (not all his fault at all. He was put in some bad situations with shitty coaching). Jake winning the job further emphasizes how behind Shane is and somewhat shows that there really may not be much competition for the starting job, which can lead to some complacency. He may be content with a 15-20 150yd no turnover state line, or maybe he's being coached to kind of play it safe, who knows. Personally I feel he is a little too conservative and would like to see him open it up a little bit. Maybe focus on some 10-15 yard routes, hit those with some consistency, and then open up the 30+ yarders. He doesn't have the best arm strength, but if he can even threaten that he can hit the deep ball, it helps M in a multitude of ways. For now, he seems to be a pretty efficient game "manager." Doesn't do much that's flashy or ultra risky that'll lose the game, but certainly leaves you wanting more. As long as the wins keep coming. Go Blue!

Exactly. Rudock has done great on a lot of the intermediate stuff like 10-15 yard outs, ins, and flags however a lot of that is off playaction and teams trying to stack the box. To me, that is still a conservative call, but it works. Nobody will complain so long as the chains are moving and he is not turning the ball over, but he and this offense won't get any better if he tops out with the short to intermediate stuff. Some of it is on him for not pulling the trigger and some of it is overthrowing/timing.

Either way, he needs some Rex Grossman Dragon Tonic.

oh yeah. it's not as bad as "the play" (stanford/cal...tuba player down). It's not "rugby instincts" , yeah you know 6 guys are about to disembowel you not the time to kick...it's the mission. get off the kick, and... leg in air it's roughing the passer. goddamn the protection. he was fucked. PS 1979 , we lost to OSU by a missed field goal, but THAT GUY came to our (TKE) party that night... if you leave game in hands of kicker, you deserve to lose. it's %. sorry it was coaching error. fuck OSU. PS. little brother? I hope you see the future...it is your past (couldn't help it "back to the future" day and all...

Didn't listen to the podcast because I figured it would either be a repeat of Monday's or pretty much the same content.  Just registered for the blog (longtime reader) because I haven't seen the coaches feet held to the fire for two things:

1) The alignment on the punt

  • Coaches may not want to give away any info, which is understandable.  However, if Baxter truly believes he didn't put his charges in the best possible position to succeed, he should at least admit that the staff failed the players on that play.  Accountability is supposed to be a central tenet of the Harbaugh regime.  I'm sure the coaches are being held accountable internally, but the fans have a right to see the question posed publicly and directly (I know Harbaugh demurred when asked about this over the weekend; I hope someone in the press is pushing on this topic).

2) The rationale for not sending the offense out on 4th down to try to draw MSU offsides

  • Lining up to go for 4th and 2 to end the game would present a very credible threat to the MSU defense.
  • I'm guessing Harbaugh has some formations along with motion and cadences designed to draw the defense offside
  • MSU is an incredibly aggressive defense -- in that situation I have to believe that there's a reasonable chance they could be drawn offside.
  • The only explanation for not attempting this would be that they didn't want to give up 5 yards in the event that they then botched the punt -- doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

It seems to me the coaches really weren't prepared for the last 10 seconds of the game. Given Harbaugh's genius and attention to detail, I find this shocking. As many sites and posts have already stated, shit happens; no issues here with the punter making 2 mistakes, but the coaches have some explaining to do.

You're certainly right on #2.  There was absolutely no reason not to at least attempt to draw MSU offsides.

I think the reality is that was simply a mistake. I know we've all sort of bought into to the idea that Harbaugh & Co. were somehow mistake proof, but it may turn out that Harbaugh is merely a one of the best coaches in country and not actually Jesus Christ himself.

So Harbaugh has gone out of his way all season to protect Rudock from criticism from the media and the fans -- as he should have.  Why haven't the coaches done the same for O'Neill??  They actually owe him more than they owe Rudock.

I don't expect anyone here to be able to answer this question except for perhaps the various moderators/contributors to the site, who apparently have some amount of direct access to the staff.  Again, I would like to see the staff's feet held to the fire.  Harbaugh's getting paid $5 million a year.

I'm reasonably confident that the staff and team will learn from this and do things differently, if they're ever in a similar situtation.  I'd be 100% confident, if they would simply come out and tell me so.

I'm a bit confused by Behm's claim that the percentage of in-state students has never dropped below 50%. There definitely were news headlines about that a few months ago. Or was he referring to undergraduate enrollment only?
