Yaklich - Pay this man

Submitted by m_go_T on

I see Yaklich's salary as Michigan's de facto "defensive coordinator" is 200k. I think they should give this man a significant raise to keep him here for the foreseeable future.

In addition to his ability to flat out coach defense, the combination of Beilein and Yaklich makes Michigan a very difficult out in the tournament because of their ability to divide labor between games. Beilein has stated that he has handed the keys to the defense over to Yaklich. Thus, when prepping for the next opponent in a tournament, Beilein only needs to analyze the next opponent's defensive film/prep for the opponent's defense, while Yaklich only needs to analyze the opponent's offensive film/prep for the opponent's offense. This makes the tandem much more efficient in the time between games (one day or one week).

I also think it would be beneficial for Beilein to have a stable right-hand man, if he wants to coach until he is 70 (or close to 70). I don't think Beilein will ever forget how to coach offense, but it would be nice to have a reliable defense for the next few years as well.

Tldr: Give Yaklich a raise; He allows Beilein to focus primarily on offense, resulting in a net positive on defense.

In practice, his entire focus was on the defensive side of the ball, allowing Beilein the freedom to work with individual players.

“(Defense is) all he thinks about,” Beilein said on Feb. 2, the day before the Wolverines played Minnesota. “That’s really good for our coaching staff. As a head coach you’ve got to think of everything, but when I’ve got a guy who doesn’t care what we’re doing offensively — he does care, but he (doesn’t) worry about that — keeps me on point toward what we have to do. … We do almost everything he suggests.”

Interesting notion coming up IF we were to play Loyola-Chicago...

He's already coached against them whilst at Illinoi State last year and seasons past...he may have an idea of their style of play. Can't be a bad thing.

I’d be really worried if we played Loyola Chicago honestly. I feel like teams aren’t taking them seriously and there making them pay. We gotta stay focused tho let’s beat FSU first every team left is a #1 seed now

They're a very good team. I should've picked them to the Sweet 16 but only had them beating Miami. However, I'm not sure they knocked those teams off becasue they were looked beyond, I again think they're just that good. And OF ALL teams to not be worried about looking past a team, it would be our boys and coaching staff!

about them in the least. KenPom had Miami lower/very close with Loyola even going into the tournament, and Tennessee is coached by Rick Barnes lmao. Dude couldn't even get Kevin freaking Durant to the second weekend. Nevada is a fine team, but Loyola tried their ass off to blow that game with 10 second half turnovers. Michigan is also the only team Loyola would have faced if it came to that, that is both top 25 in offensive and defensive efficiency per KenPom. What Loyola is doing is amazing, but they were given a very beneficial draw as a cinderella, and Michigan would likely be the only game in which they didn't have a talent or coaching advantage.

Interesting how, in peoples' eyes, Montana went from being by far the most dangerous 14 seed before the game, to a total patsy that we should be ashamed of only beating by 14 (despite the spread being less) afterward.

Without looking too far ahead (actually, it's fine, I'm not playing tomorrow), IF Loyola advances and is staring down the barrel of a Michigan team with a full week to prepare, think about how they're gonna feel. I have zero concern for our team looking past a team in the Final Four.

Beilein and the team will not take them lightly if they play them. No way. No how. Not when a trip to the championship game would be on the line. They will be all business and will have had a week to prepare. If Loyola would beat them, they would earn it the hard way.

The only reason he should ever leave is for a head coaching gig. If head coaching is what he wants then he will be gone in a year or two and good luck to him. We won't forget what he has accomplished in Ann Arbor

He definitely deserves a raise, but a man of his talent also deserves a shot at a head coaching gig. Enjoy the fruits of his labor while he's still here, but know that he's probably not ours to keep.

that he'd take over when Beilein leaves a raise will keep him. He'll have choices and here they are:

1. Take over a dumpster fire and have to rebuild from a fired coach where you have to make new bonds with players

2. Take over for a retiring coach where you don't have any real bonds with players and no bonds with coaches that expected the job you took.

3. Take over a team that you helped build and recruit that's performing at a high level at a college where you have a long leash for down seasons as long as you do it right

If I'm him, it's an easy choice. Stay and take over as long as that's known ahead of time.

Either way, he needs a raise ASAP.

What's appropriate? I'm not too familiar with asst basketball coaches salaries. If he's at 200k now, double it to 400k? Anything to keep this man here a few more years, He'll likely be seeing some HC offers soon.

we want him here until Beilein hangs it up and then maybe he can take over for stability. He's shown he can coach D and I'm sure he's learning a bunch from the master. Don't just pay him, keep him.
