Wisconsin Game Sunday

Submitted by swoosh on

Anybody notice how our players were slipping on the court?  Mathews looked like he had skates on at times.  Poole also was slipping all over the place, would hope Nike would have better grip on their shoes.

The Trohl Center is the only B1G basketball arena that does double duty as a hockey arena.  And the Badgers were home for a pair of games this weekend against Minnesota on Friday and Saturday night.  Is it possible that the arena crew did not do the required conversion maintenance to keep the court dry?

(Edited to note that the Schott in Columbus also does double duty.)

Considering the early start time of the basketball game, the maintenance crew most likely worked through the night or started very early Sunday.  Either way, definitely a chance they didn't do a perfect job.

Incorrect. The Schott still pulls double duty for OSU.

Which isn't to say that it's unreasonable to surmise the ice may have had an effect. It does happen from time to time, and it's not necessarily the fault of the maintenance crew. Particularly since there were hockey games earlier in the weekend.

Happens to all of us.

FWIW if condensation had been significant at the Kohl yesterday Michigan would have made a big deal of it and Wisconsin wouldn't have been happy with it, either. Any significant moisture accumulation on a basketball floor is dangerous and it would have had to have been dealt with. The lack of a strong reaction suggests that moisture wasn't a huge problem.

was the possession after an offensive foul call where a Badger fell in the lane just outside the restricted circle.  The player that slipped was in exactly the same spot.  I'm willing to be that they just didn't do much, if anything, to wipe up the sweat, and that was a big cause of the problems.  Wisconsin didn't have as much of an issue because their offense was mostly Happ backing his man down or long jumpers, so they weren't doing as much driving and changing direction in the lane.

I suspect it was a problem with the quick turnover of the Kohl Center from ice rink to basketball court.  You've got a refrigerated sheet of ice under that basketball court, and depending on temp and humidity, it can lead to sweat not evaporating as quickly as it otherwise would or just straight-up spots of condensation.

I've never seen a player slip as much as Matthews does when he drives the lane. I thought it was his shoes but it seems like they would've fixed it by now if that was the issue

I actually mentioned in a post about a month or so ago (maybe longer) that matthews had been slipping all year. He was one of the few explosive players on our team wearing the Jordan 32 at the time. I am a bit of a sneaker head and traction was one of the things that had recieved a negative review from almost everyone that I had read or seen. Poole and Simpson up to that point had not seen the floor mutch. Livers had been wearing the Jordan Super.Fly and MAAR was wearing the 31's and didn't seem to have an issue. The three guys I remember slipping in the game were Poole, Matthews and Simpson on the miracle layup. All were wearing the 32's, so I think that could be the main reason for the issue.

As a side note, Duncan Robinson and Teske both wear the 32's as well, but they don't have the same explosiveness as the other three so I don't think traction would be a problem for those two.

I was at the game sunday, i think matthews needs to have a bit more control himself on the drives he has into traffic, gets caught up or turns it over far too much going to the hole.

Matthews might need to squat more... it very well could be a traction issue but it also sometimes seems to be a stength thing as his quads appear to give out under the duress. Bambi is a great comparison by Beilein.
