Trying to bring ICC soccer back to the Big House

Submitted by scanner blue on

In an email to get Event Team members to sign up for spring commencement and spring football, they mentioned that they're trying to get a late July soccer match. In previous years that we hosted we received the same message  and ultimately got the bid. With our record crowds, and how well the events turned out, I would assume that we are probably as close to being on the "for sure" list as you could get. On a personal note I loved working the first two and only wish I could have quenched my thirst with a Bass Ale during the second match...it was hot!

I just want more sports stuff to watch in A2 between the end of March Madness and the start of football season. I don't care if its ICC Soccer, NHL, or whatever.

The two highest attended soccer matches in the history of the US were ICC matches at the big house, one in 2016 and one 2014.

They didn’t come back last year due to a scheduling conflict.

They’ll be back this year. Stephen Ross owns the ICC and has made a commitment to at least one of the tournament’s sponsors.

I vote we have a Champions open thread for the quarterfinals and moving forward.    Where's that guy that used to start the threads last year at this time.

The first one was best, the one at Co-Pa last year was meh, and the Chelsea-Real Madrid game in 2016 was middling at best. What stinks about the years the Big House has hosted these games is the fact it's the same year as the major tournaments (World Cup 2014, Real Madrid Man Utd that summer, Euro 2016, Real Madrid Chelsea that summer, World Cup this summer - possible match.) While it's neat to see the Big House set up for the sport and get a little more a soccer vibe while tailgating compared to Michigan Football, it would be good if we could actually get teams at full strength and not just a 15 minute Ronaldo cameo for us to cheer while U-23 players take the field. I know we will never see a full strength Starting 11 in an ICC game but the lineups at the Big House have left much to be desired due to mandatory rest for the stars coming off major tournaments.

I'm not into soccer but my good friends family is straight from Mexico so we all decided to go in 2014 to the Man U-Real Madrid game. We tailgated like a UM football game at Pioneer. It was definitely a different crowd and different atmosphere but man it was fun!

Had to work the 2016 game but I'd definitely consider going back if/when there is another one!

Went to one of the Man U - Real games. Does anyone remember if they rolled out real grass on top of our fake turf? They must of, right? You can't play on that fake shit.
