Tenth football coach (again)

Submitted by CarrIsMyHomeboy on

With Drevno departing, Michigan once again has a coaching vacancy. And this time, I don't have much intuition for the target type. Conventional knowledge is that it won't be on defense -- but even if it's not pressing, given the staff asymmetry, conventional knowledge may be wrong. Will it be a new STs coordinator to reduce the load for Partridge, Zordich, and Washington? (1) Will it be another "Running game coordinator," or (2a) are we ending the era of split coordinators** or (2b) does RGC now fold into Warriner's responsibilities****?

**(many fans presume the answer is yes, though that seems premature)

****(I could understand that but hope not given the wide gap between Warriner's solo-OL [excellent, rare] versus OL+OC [marginal, average] productivity)

My understanding of the coaching staff to date:

OFFENSE

QB - JMFH

OL - Warriner       [1]

WR - McElwain       [2]

TE - Sherrone       [3]

RB - Jaybaugh       [4]

PGC (or full coordinator?) - Pep       [5]

RGC (or nonexistent?) - xxxxxxx

DEFENSE

DL - Mattison       [6]

LBs - Washington (and Brown?)       [7]

DBs - Zordich       [8]

Coordinator - Brown       [9]

SPECIAL TEAMS

Some division of labor between Zordich, Partridge, and Washington

We already have 10 coaches, and here is my perception of the breakdown.

QB - Pep Hamilton

RB - Jay Harbaugh

WR - Jim McElwain

TE - Sherrone Moore

OL - Ed Warriner

Offensive Coordinator - Jim Harbaugh as the "true" OC; with plenty of feedback and whatever titles get assigned to Pep and other Jim

-----

DL - Greg Mattison

LB - Washington

CB - Mike Zordich

S - Chris Partridge

Defensive Coordinator - Don Brown (who will probably dedicate more of his individual time between DL and LB, since the secondary is well covered)

I've heard rumors and expect Mattison to be near the end of his road.  I think Washington to DL, Partridge back to LB, and Devin Bush ultimately getting his shot to join the staff with safeties is something we might see within 1-2 years.  But that's getting way ahead of things.

I'd be ok with that end result given Mattison's eventual retirement.

The guy has given a lot to Michigan. Came back from the NFL To help right the ship, stuck around even after Hoke left, and even took a demotion just to stay and help. Couldn't hold the guy in any higher regards.

He deserves to live on in Michigan lore.

To Greg Mattison.  Every Michigan football fan owes Mattison a debt of gratitude as a hero of the Michigan coaching staff since the Brady Hoke era.  He was an excellent coordinator and has been outstandng as DL coach.  The DL has by far been the strongest position group since he's been with the program.  I truly do not know where we'd be without him.

I told you. We're an anarchosyndicalist commune. We take

it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.

But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.

By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more....

Harbaugh has said numerous times that they’re still self-evaluating and roles have yet to be determined. Ultimately, there are four guys with experience calling plays. Pep, Warriner and McElwain have all been OCs, and Harbaugh obviously has a huge hand in playcalling. I would expect at least 3/4 of them to have a hand in it. But wouldn’t be surprised If all four have some input.

I’m kinda hoping Jay spreads his wings a bit and gets some coaching experience on another staff. I don’t think anyone can say he is a good coach or bad coach, but it is likely getting close to the time for him to move on for his own career’s sake. I also don’t like nepotism

I blame this new math that has my sister texting pics of her kids' homework wondering what the hell she's looking at... and I don't know either.

Damnit, I am torn - clearly there is a problem in the initial post, but the man redeemed himself with a grace and hunility rarely seen around here. Do we let it stand as a model for doing things the right way, rather than the normal "double down and get in real trouble" way?

had an 81 % percent chance of winning the Eastern Conference, while Boston had a 57 % chance.  They then assinged smaller chances to Cleveland and others so that the total probabilites assigned were north of 190 percent.  Nobody on the ESPN panel said anything.  So you might still be better at math than some on ESPN and have that going for you, which is nice.
