Spring is Here - Tiger Opener Tomorrow - Season Predictions

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

If I'm not mistaken, tomorrow is opening day for the tigers. When I lived downstate that was a fun thing, even when the tigers weren't any good.   Well, looks like those times have returned. Their grapefruit league record was 13-15.  Since last season they jettisoned Ausmus.  Their opening day roster looks like this:

POSITION STARTER 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
Catcher James McCann John Hicks Derek Norris
First Base Miguel Cabrera John Hicks Victor Martinez
Second Base Dixon Machado Alexi Amarista
Third Base Jeimer Candelario Nicholas Castellanos Dixon Machado
Shortstop Jose Iglesias Alexi Amarista Dixon Machado
Left Field Mikie Mahtook JaCoby Jones Jim Adduci
Center Field Leonys Martin JaCoby Jones Victor Reyes
Right Field Nicholas Castellanos Mikie Mahtook Victor Reyes
Designated Hitter Victor Martinez Miguel Cabrera
Starting Pitcher Michael Fulmer Jordan Zimmermann Matthew Boyd Mike Fiers Francisco Liriano
Relief Pitcher Alex Wilson Joe Jimenez Drew VerHagen Blaine Hardy Daniel Stumpf
Closer Shane Greene

I haven't followed them closely other than to know last year started out okay and then went downhill hard and fast, with i think a 64-98 final record.  Yeesh.

Anyway, today's question is/are these:  What are your predictions for the tigers this year, and will you be at opening day (Looks like rain tomorrow)?

Sorry but I fucking hate baseball. One of the reasons I don’t listen to anyone on 97.1 the ticket is because Doug and gator talk about baseball 97.98% of the year and the radio show is only bearable from 10-2

Just giving my opinion on a sport before the season starts. I never comment on baseball threads unless it’s about Michigan because Go Blue! I just never understood how someone can watch sports like
football and basketball and also find enjoyment in baseball? Way to slow for my taste and wayyyy too many meaningless games

That may be the 2nd worst Tigers team i have ever seen.  Holy fuck.

I really feel for the older Tiger fans.  They may never see the playoffs the rest of their lives.  Its going to take a while.

Yikes!

Tigers shock the world and finish 85-77 and narrowly miss wild card.  Miggy rebounds for .300/30/100+; Fullmer wins 17 with sub 3 ERA; Castellanos turns into JD and cranks 35.  After a good 2018, youth movement in full swing in 2019 as farm produces more solid talent and we challenge for ALC next season.   And Tom Brookens returns in 2019 as our third base coach.

open up wallet and pay for the talent, they should be good for the money spent. Hoping my Rockies can take the next step and get deeper into the playoffs this year. If their young pitchers improve a little it's possible, but never get my hopes up too high.

Always love opening day as hope springs eternal.

Don't want facts to get in the way of a popular narrative, but the Yankees don't even have a payroll in the top five anymore and it's been fun to see them build this team with good young talent. Their big FA signings are guys like Sabathia and Ellsbury, who are marginal players. They're led by Judge and Sanchez and similar guys who came up through the minors. That being said, if they need to add a big SP for some other piece at the deadline, I'm sure they will bully the selling teams with more cash and better prospects.

68-94 is my prediction. Gardenhire will blow about 10 less games than Brad Ausmus would have with this 2018 version of the Tigers, simply because he'll make the most of a mediocre pitching staff, something Ausmus never figured out as skipper. As I see it, the Tigers bullpen will show improvement, problem is that all too often the offense won't be able to score enough runs to hand them a lead to protect. But I really like the potential of the duo of Joe Jimenez and Shane Greene in the 8th and 9th innings.

I predict that this is the year Victor Martinez starts using a cane when running the bases. Nick Castellanos is basically late-career Magglio in right field...and mid-career Magglio at the plate...and is traded mid season. Miguel Cabrera tries to hit a home run every time. Goes through at least 2 different weeks where he succeeds in doing so. Someone suggests that we fire Leyland. A non-Tigers fan will ask you how Verlander is doing this year.

I predict I will watch as many games (zero) as I did last year. I used to love baseball but the Tigers have worn me out to the point that I can't stand watching it anymore. After Monday night, it's going to be a long wait until football. Go Blue!

Are you insinuating that because the Tigers will be 0-162, they will be automatically given a playoff spot, which they will continue to get swept for three straight series (Because they get to keep playing if they keep losing of course), and before declaring them both World Series Champs and and Worst team of all time, they will be forced to play a best 9 of 17 series against the Little League World Series Champs, where those 11 year old japanese kids hit dingers left and right in route to a sweep? I like it, 0-182 it is!

66-96 with signs of growth from Candelario, Norris, and Boyd. They trade Greene, Liriano, and Castellanos at the deadline and are pleasently enjoyable to watch because the expectations are so low that they're impossible to disappoint.

there probably is some high school with the Drop Bear as a mascot. Nothing at all wrong with having a vicious, cunning, ruthless furry killing machine as a mascot. But at least the Wolverine doesn't pretend to be cuddley like the Drop Bear's alter ego, the "Koala", does.

52-110. Pitching staff in general is horrific, and we’re not going to get much offensively outside of Miggy and Castellanos. I don’t want to hear a word about Gardenhire. I don’t care who is managing this year. You can’t win the Indy 500 when all you have to run is a golf cart.

It'll be a heavy-loss season, but hopefully not a wasted one. With luck, by the end of the year, they'll have a better idea who can play and who can't. They'll also get V-Mart's contract off the books (hopefully, he'll have a farewell tour he can be proud of). And we'll see what prospects they get when certain players get peddled at the trading deadline.

Bottom line: If they lose fewer than 100 games I'll be pleasantly surprised. If they lose fewer than 90 I think Gardy ought to be Manager of the Year.

It just feels impossible to think about baseball. The Tigers suck, Michigan's in the F4, and it's still 4 degrees outside.

I feel sorry for the team on opening day, that place might be a quarter full. The city will be bumping like it always is, but no one's going through those gates.

The good thing about baseball is that, if you aren't supposed to be good, nobody cares how much you suck.  Some level of baseball will be played by the Detroit Tigers, and I'm fine with that.
