Softball sweeps doubleheader with Rutgers

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Weather has wreaked havoc on this weekend.

From the cancellation of the Football spring game to Michigan Softball. Michigan was originally only scheduled to play Rutgers today at 6pm, but Saturday's poor weather forecast (more on that later) pushed Saturday's game to today.

So #17 Michigan took on Rutgers in a doubleheader beginning at 4pm at home at Alumni Field.

Rutgers took an early 1-0 lead in the first game to start, frustrating Meghan Beaubien who had a shaky first inning but gave up just one hit the rest of the game. But their lead was a very short lived one as Michigan erased that lead in the bottom of the 1st on a Madison Uden grand slam--the first of her young Michigan career--to go up 4-1.

Two innings later in the 3rd, Aidan Falk broke out of her slump and extended the Wolverine lead on a two run double to make it 6-1 Michigan.

Michigan put up 5 in inning #5 on RBI singles from Natalie Rodriguez and Natalie Peters along with a 3-run walkoff blast to end game 1 early via the run rule.

Michigan beats Rutgers, 11-1 in 5 innings.

Game 2 happened at 6pm and there was no early Rutgers lead this time. Aidan Falk once again came up big with a 2-run bomb. A few batters later, Faith Canfield tallied an RBI single to make it 3-0 Michigan after two complete.

Tera Blanco got the start in the circle this game as Beaubien has already pitched twice this week including once today. Blanco's last start was a no-hitter against EMU on Tuesday. But she was not as sharp in this one. Rutgers added a run on an RBI single in the 4th inning, beating the tag at home to make it a 3-1 Michigan lead.

Michigan responded later in the same inning with another Madison Uden RBI, this time a single to push the lead back to three runs. However, Rutgers cut into again in the 5th when they tacked on a run and had Blanco in her toughest jam all week. Bases loaded and a full count on a batter. She got the swinging K though and the only damage was make it 4-2.

The bats carried over the momentum, as Natalia Rodriguez bunted in a run with bases loaded to make it 5-2. Blanco then followed with a 2 RBI single, with Natalie Peters scoring shortly after on a wild pitch. An 8-2 Michigan lead.

Aidan Falk's day was today she hit her second dinger of the nightcap in the 6th inning to make it a 9-2 Michigan lead.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Schaefer relieved Blanco in the 7th and got the 3 outs, ending the game and the doubleheader.

Michigan takes game 2, 9-2.

Michigan is now 35-7, 10-1 in the B1G.

Saturday's game was moved to Friday at 4pm. However, due to the weather forecast on Sunday being horrible as well, Sunday's game is now on Saturday at 2pm despite the weather being bad for that game. They're gonna try tomorrow to get the game in and will try again on Sunday if the weather is as predicted. In college softball a game can be counted after 5 complete innings.

No social media involved. I talked with Josh and Andrew when they entered Alumni field near Schembechler Hall. ( At my post I check M-cards and give out tickets). They both mentioned “the dog house” when I recounted highlights. One girlfriend hit their first grand slam of their career, the other a game closing two run homer both not seen by boyfriend. “After game quarters “was just bad writing that should have been edited or revised...my bad.

to squeeze in an extra game last night and take advantage of the good spring weather. If it was as warm in AA as here yesterday afternoon and early evening in SW Michigan, it would have been about ideal conditions for players and fans alike. I spent the evening watching my 9-year old granddaughter's softball team practicing. When practice started at 5 pm it was a balmy 64° and the diamond was dry; by 6 the wind had shifted out of the NE and the temperature quickly dropped. Coach called off practice 15 minutes early at 6:45 when light sprinkles turned to a steady rain. By then, it was a damp, bone-chilling 47° and my granddaughter was begging for some hot chocolate.
