SIAP: WS3 Official Visit to Wyoming

Submitted by umbig11 on

If this was already discussed Thursday or Friday I just flat out missed it. Anyway, Speight took an official visit to Wyoming this week. He took in one of their practices and talked to their staff for a couple of days. I haven't heard anything since, but that does not sound like a QB that is returning to Michigan. Missing our spring practice and attending others should be enough evidence to indicate he won't return. My initial opinion after Harbaugh's interview remains the same. It was just another awkward moment for Jim when answering questions. He is a tough interview. One other person close to it has said the same thing, "it was just Jim being Jim." Knowing how quickly things get posted here, I could have missed it, so delete if needed.

I've been to Laramie. I can only imagine how badly Speight must want to start...anywhere...if he is seriously considering transfering to Wyoming.

as you are one of a few insiders that bring us behind the curtain information.

Secondly, if you were to make a redundant post I'm quite confident that it would contain info not known by someone posting from an mlive, detnews, landof10, etc. type of article.

Thirdly, this is new and much appreciated info.

Thanks for all of your contributions.

blows sky-high while you're visiting. Otherwise, a beautiful place to spend a little time vacationing (or in Speight's case, playing football).

mountains, beauty, great hunting and fishing, not crowded.  would definitely consider living there if northern michigan didn't exist.

as a slight 'cool story bro' comment, that was one of the schools that recruited my oldest brother to play ball and he took an official visit out there.  brought me back a stetson cowboy hat that i still have.  that had to be in about 1972.

in wyoming back in the day.  we had an epic trip and i even wrote an article about it years later.  if you like space, wyoming is a good place.  laramie is at about 7,000 feet, too. i always thought that would be a signif advantage in conditioning for the cowboys when they play home games.  takes a bit to get used to elevation like that.  hunting in the mountains can be a lot like exercise.

that hat i mentioned is in the basement.  its seen better days, but it is part of my own family lore now as the kids have used it many times in their playing, putting on plays for mgowife and i, and other stuff.

dogged and determined, honest.   ex-marine sgt who also taught self defense at the police academy. think of the marlboro man, but with a gun and without the cigs.  he would most definitely qualify as a 'dude' under the don brown system of classifying people.

Part of it may be that it was really my first western national park that I went to, but the rock formations just blew me away. It’s kind of right on the edge between prairie country and where it starts to get into the Rockies and it’s just these mesmerizing formations and landscapes. You can explore a good deal, you hear the coyotes at night, idk I just had a great time there. Yellowstone, Teton, and Grand Canyon are all great too, though the Grand Canyon is almost too big to really take in. It’s hard to conceptualize even when it’s in front of you.

Badlands National Park is definitely beautiful.  The falls in Sioux Falls are quite pretty, although nothing compared to, say, the Cascades.  And the Corn Palace is its own amazing piece of kitsch -- just to give you something to do for the hundreds of miles until you get to Badlands. :)

The Black Hills of South Dakota are beautiful, though.  There's really not a bad route -- well, except the freeway :) -- but I like US 16A southeast of Mount Rushmore.  There are a couple of pulloffs where you can see the monument, but there's also the feeling of winding around the top of the world that you just can't get in Michigan.

There's little in North Dakota except shale -- which means rapid growth and a lot more crime than you'd expect.  However, in the far western part of the state, out near Teddy Roosevelt National Park, it's actually quite pretty.  You can definitely combine this with South Dakota, although I'd try to do North Dakota first because I found South Dakota better.

The problem with doing the Dakotas and Montana in the same trip is that, unless you're purely doing it to mark off the states -- which I get :) -- the most interesting parts of Montana are hundreds of miles away from the eastern border. It's hard to find a place emptier than eastern Montana (although, back on topic, eastern Wyoming is similar :).  Actually, Wyoming is so remote that the freeways all have movable arms like you'd see at a train crossing.  They're located on the way out of town, just after the last exit.  If they have to close the freeway due to a blizzard, they block the road and make everybody take that final exit and return to the city.

I feel bad for Wilton Speight.  I think he misread the market for his services and made a decision that he may now be starting to regret.  He led this team within inches of a Big Ten title game and likely playoff berth, and then he basically fell off of a cliff.  I wonder if he's traumatized by the offensive line play.  He seemed to have lost confidence even before the Purdue game.  Best of luck to the young man.

I moved to Bozeman, MT from Saginaw, MI 12 years ago, it was the best decision I've ever made.  If you find yourself around the Bozeman area when you make it to Montana I'd love to show you around or at least put down a couple whiskeys with you umbig11!  Thanks for all of your content and insider insight into the program, we all really appreciate it!

I currently live in Rapid City, SD (edge of the Black Hills near the Badlands) and would be more than willing to provide information to help you on your trip. I read the blog all the time and appreciate the information you bring to the board. I didn’t have an account until I saw this topic and felt it was only fitting that I try and provide any needed assistance.
