It doesn't read like someone who has inside info wrote it...
January 10th, 2018 at 9:32 AM ^
I don't have any insider knowledge, but when the Vegas books have Michigan with the fifth best odds of winning the national champtionship next year at 9 to 1, I'm thinking someone has an inside track on what's going to happen. Everyone knows the defense will be great, but the offense is still a big question mark. If Shea won't be eligible, I don't think Vegas is going to put Michigan in their top 5 or top 10 with Peters or McCaffery at the helm -- especially given our schedule. The odds are mostly about a projection of performance with betting behavior around certain teams and fan bases shifting things a bit.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:45 AM ^
the business of making pure predictions. Vegas would put Michigan with those odds if it helped them make money and avoid losing money, the odds are almost entirely based on how they think the money will come in. Michigan having the 5th best odds doesn't mean Vegas thinks they have a top 5 chance of winning it, but rather that they feel it would avoid a massive money pitfall if Michigan did win due to the large Michigan fan base putting money on Michigan. If you're an NFL fan, you'll notice that along with all the favorites, the Chicago Bears almost always have some of the best odds to win the Super Bowl despite not being very good the last 10 years. It's because they have a large fan base and always see a good amount of betting.
January 10th, 2018 at 11:34 AM ^
and can afford to throw down $100 on Michigan at 50:1 odds which might be more realistic. You are right that Vegas is in it to make money and would bring Michigan's odds down a bit.
January 10th, 2018 at 10:24 AM ^
You mean, until Higdon or one of the OL are seives and let a DL hit Patterson and knock him out..... happened twice this year to two different QBs.
January 10th, 2018 at 1:00 PM ^
How the position groups work together is so much more important than the relative strength of them individually. A great running back can make a porous OL look good and a QB with a quick release or the ability to scramble can make receivers and tackles look good too.
For all the crap UM's offensive line took from fans, how many times did we see further reviews of plays showing open receivers that QBs missed? For all the talk about WRs not getting open, we saw later that 3rd down at PSU gave JOK 2 open receivers and he took a sack. Or against OSU JOK's pick came when 3 different receivers ran the right routes and were open.
Michigan's should be feature back going into next season averaged 6.1 yards per carry last year. Wisconsin is what many of us consider to be the gold standard in the B1G. Taylor averaged 6.6. A QB who knows what the hell he's doing can open a lot of doors to offensive play calling that can mitigate some of the offensive weaknesses. Last year we saw a backup QB from the AAC with accuracy and indecision issues and a redshirt freshman on whose optimism we may have jumped far too quickly.
A competent QB can mitigate many of the issues we saw last season and I still don't think the OL was as bad as many try to argue.
Just my $.02 worth.
January 10th, 2018 at 12:16 PM ^
Think about that for a minute. Vegas is simply playing the odds in their favor. If they assumed Patterson was not going to be available, Michigan would be more like a 25-1, 30-1 or worse. People would hedge this bet with the thought that if Patterson won his eligibility, the odds would drop. Vegas would then be on the hook for a bunch of bets at odds against their favor. The way they are starting out is safe for their books
January 10th, 2018 at 12:34 PM ^
that much of a long shot without Patterson. We're fans overreacting after a bad loss. Non-Michigan fans would jump all over that bet with our defense.
If Vegas were to offer odds on Patterson being eligible, they would probably be about 25-1 in favor of it. Nobody has inside information, but I've yet to see any knowledgable writer predict the Ole Miss transfers won't get a waiver. It should be a no-brainer, even for the NCAA.
January 10th, 2018 at 10:13 AM ^
I actually know Walter Cherepinsky who runs the site personally, he does not have any insder information when it comes to this situation. He does have contacts in the NFL particularly with the Tampa Bay Bucs, but when it comes to the NCAA he is passing along what he hears from NFL Scouts.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:21 AM ^
What is with people projecting Michigan defensive lineman lower than they should be? I thought Taco Charlton should've been drafted higher and so should Hurst, but everything has him at 20th or later. It's puzzling. Gary for sure should be a top 5 pick if he keeps this up. Having a 1st overall pick at qb would certainly be a major upgrade from this year
January 10th, 2018 at 8:54 AM ^
Is your beef about disagreeing with Taco’s actual draft position or the projections that he’d be picked later than you thought he should?
January 10th, 2018 at 11:23 AM ^
I felt he should have been taken higher, at least with some of the other defensive lineman taken ahead of him. Regardless, the Cowboys got a solid player and I'm sure are happy with it, as well as Jourdan Lewis in the 2nd round, who has played very well
January 10th, 2018 at 9:25 AM ^
What is the perceived knock on Hurst that would keep him that low? I can't imagine he's going to compare unfavorably in stats or measurables.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:36 AM ^
And isn't necessarily long. He also doesn't necessarily have complete scheme flexibility (he isn't going to be a two-gap 3-4 DE). So it limits some of his options. If Hurst was 305 lb and maintained his athleticism, he would be a top 10 pick. Alas, he isn't. So he's a late 1st early 2nd type.
January 10th, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
he's the same weight as aaron donald and about an inch or two taller. donald was a mid first rounder.
January 10th, 2018 at 2:13 PM ^
And got drafted at the high end of his projection. And was also in a weaker DT class. 2014's next DT taken was Dominique Easley with pick 29, then Hageman at 37, Jernigan at 48, Ferguson at 51; that's it in the first two rounds. In contrast, Hurst is up against Vae, Wilkins, Payne, and Bryan, all almost certainly to also go in the first two rounds, along with potentially Dre'Mont Jones, Trenton Thompson, Derrick Nnadi, Rasheem Green, Andrew Brown, Harrison Phillips, and D. Russell, all potentially 2-3 round picks, so stiffer competition at the top of the draft.
That said, Donald's senior year: 59 tackles, 28.5 TFL, 11 Sacks, 4 FF (Career: 181, 66, 29.5, 6)
Hurst: 60 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 5 sacks, 1 FF (137, 32.5, 12.5, 2)
Donald's production was absurd.
It's not a bad comparison, similar size and playing style, but it isn't identical. That Hurst is still projected to go as high as he is despite his size is extremely impressive and speaks to his talent. Donald is the exception, not the rule.

What the hell is walterfootball.com?
January 10th, 2018 at 8:26 AM ^
writes it. Shea at #1?
January 10th, 2018 at 10:09 AM ^
at #11...that's rich. I don't see how they win 6 or 7 games next year.
January 10th, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
They need to worry about winning 1 before anything else.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:37 AM ^
I remember seeing his 2018 mock draft and he had Tyrone Wheatley Jr. as a first round pick coming out this year. No disrespect to WheatleyJr., hes a good TE and I believe he has not reached his cieling but yeah... this Walter dude is not the best at mock drafts.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:59 AM ^
Makes meth.
Makes mock draft.
Makes more meth.
January 10th, 2018 at 12:09 PM ^
At least you didn't think it was waterfootball like I did!
January 10th, 2018 at 8:23 AM ^
I've seen a few mock drafts with him in the top 10...
Hoping it's a good sign of his eligibility
January 10th, 2018 at 8:30 AM ^
FWIW Walterfootball gets zero respect among the Draft/Scout community. Would take this with a grain of salt.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:37 AM ^
With amazing projections such as the one above, I can’t imagie why they don’t get the utmost respect.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:39 AM ^
Did anyone look at the rest of the list? I'm wondering how they figure out picks when they claim the order is completely random.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:53 AM ^
The fact that MiguelCabrera would take time out of his busy batting cage schedule to let us know about this is all anyone needs to know. Best of luck this year, Cabby!
January 10th, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
I thought his nickname was Miggy
January 10th, 2018 at 9:20 AM ^
Who took a whizz in everyones coffee this morning. Thought this was a positive, happy, put a little skip in your step kind of a post...maybe, just maybe, we could have a good year next year. Our system is based on the QB. If we have no QB we suck. Someone (who makes a living on this crap, by the way) thinks we have a good f'ing QB. THIS MAKES ME HAPPY. NOW SHUT THE F UP AND BE HAPPY DAMN IT!!!!!
January 10th, 2018 at 10:28 AM ^
when you previously received hundreds of downvotes last April when you posted that Dominos Pizza was going to be the new title sponsor of The Big House?
April fool joke casualties aside...this latest post is more of a factual hop and a jump over real talent ratings used by the NFL to evaluate draft candidates.
We all hope Shea is Sunshine Superman but I will personally wait until he shows he is the top NFL QB college prospect in a Michigan uniform before I skip along and sing show tunes.
Real M fans are obviously tired of the nearly instant adulation and flash mob support of the last six M congo line of QBs when they were annointed— but did not, in fact—win M’s coveted rival or bowl games.
We hope the poll and you turn out to be genius twins but we have historically and collectively earned the exhausting right to wait and see proof and results this time around...
And, QUIT YELLING at everyone...
Have a Kahlua and Tomato Juice (shaken, not stirred)—XtraMelanin talks about them calmly in his posts frequently....
MGOBLOG has 10,000 candidates that may replace Nostradamos some day...
But, we need a winning QB now.
January 10th, 2018 at 11:44 AM ^
Agreed about the QB
January 10th, 2018 at 1:00 PM ^
Zero is much more respect than he deserves.
January 10th, 2018 at 8:36 AM ^
Top draft pick and Peters is his competition for the starting job...so he should win the starting role easily right?
January 10th, 2018 at 8:55 AM ^
Who is Walter?
January 10th, 2018 at 9:09 AM ^
I have followed Walter for a long time..No he doesnt know anything more about Sheas eligibility but he does alot of scouting and breakdown so he is a solid judge of talent.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:13 AM ^
Literally every fan base thinks this of their team.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:30 AM ^
I do not.
January 10th, 2018 at 9:33 AM ^
so i think we found this waldo guy.....writing for walterfootball
January 10th, 2018 at 9:39 AM ^
But looking beyond that is a pointless endevour. They don't really know about future draft picks, scouts aren't talking much about them (or spending much time on them) because they have to focus on the upcoming draft. So it basically is a list of "hyped players". Shea was a 5 star who played a lot at the QB position. Therefore, Shea = high draft pick.
January 10th, 2018 at 10:08 AM ^
"League contacts have told Charlie Campbell that Patterson compares favorably to Johnny Manziel"
January 10th, 2018 at 11:32 AM ^
Seems like a comparable skill set, and a better attitude. Improvising, throwing on the run, and pretty solid arm stregnth. Shea is the type of player that helps a team put points on the board in this college football landscape. We have a lot to be optimistic about. Whether he is the #1 pick in the NFL draft means nothing to me other than the recruiting ramifications it would give us for having the #1 pick in the draft.
Oklahoma with Mayfield shredded that George D that Bama had a real problem moving the ball on, and Shea compares pretty well with Mayfield.
January 10th, 2018 at 11:13 AM ^
The Chicago Bears will be the 6th-worst team in the league next year. As a Bears fan, I'd be pleased with that progress

Didn’t this time last year Walter Football had Wheatley Jr. as a top 20 pick in the ‘19 draft also?
January 10th, 2018 at 11:51 AM ^
And no.
January 10th, 2018 at 11:59 AM ^
Clayton Thorson going 4 is the real head scratcher. Reminds me when people were giving Mitch Leidner a first or second round grade.
Overall I have always enjoyed this website for mock drafts. Mock drafts are all crap shoots anyways.
January 10th, 2018 at 12:00 PM ^
Also has Maurice Hurst going in the second round this year...not sure he's good at this mock draft thing
January 10th, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
Hard to say Hurst would have gone too early when he wasn't even the starter last year. I do remember seeing a few mocks with him in the 1st round, but until he came out and dominated like he did this year he was a tough guy to really place.
