Over Michigan, all Clemson had to do was tell him the current program won't even be here in the next years and "look what happened during the first years of the last coaching change" and then pointed him to exhibit A of internet forum meltdowns of idiot Michigan fans screaming UNACCEPTABLE!!! in unison.

Recruiting against Michigan has to be so easy right now, seriously. I bet we don't land a single recruit who witnessed the boo'ing during the Iowa game. Then fans go online complain we aren't getting players we need blah blah. Self fulfilling prophecies....sigh.

I'm sure it is the people that come on here criticizing the coaching staff for their terrible conference record that caused this.  It couldn't possibly be the terrible conference record itself.  I'm sure Clemson has never had a negative fan reaction on a message board or in the stadium.

This is a good tactic you have, blame people with opposing views as your own for losing recruits in the hopes that you won't have to ever be in disagreement with another poster.

Is to pretend like your criticism has no real world impact whatsoever. That way you get the satisfaction and sense of self-worth that comes from criticizing things you find UNACCEPTABLE without having to worry about whether your catharsis comes at any real-world cost to anything.

First of all, its funny how you lump anyone that has criticism as part of the UNACCEPTABLE crowd. Thats a political tactic in itself, as trying to label a dissenting view as extreme. I've never once said "UNACCEPTABLE", and I've been pretty objective with my criticism of the coaching staff.

Second, the point of my post wasn't to conclusively say that message board and stadium negativity never have impact on recruiting, but more to say that there are many, many reasons why schools lose recruits. To point at message board and stadium negativity as the only possible explanation for losing one specific recruit is not logical.

The solution to criticism is easy: Don't replay the same game 4 different times against rivals we used to eat up, and criticism won't happen.  People on this blog who are critical of Rich gotta be tipped pretty hard to do so.  This is nothing like Mlive or Freep where flighty fans roll with the wind.

Give these kids a little credit. They can tell whether a situation works for them or not without reading fan blogs.

Not according to Craig Roh's father.  The recruits do read the blog and do take the personal attacks to heart.  That doesn't mean criticism isn't allowable but it does mean we shouldn't crank the volume to 11 after every loss, especially when all the measurables point to expectation for a loss.

The only game we've lost this year that I expected to win going into it was Penn State, and they happened to luck into their new QB who proceeded to carve up defenses that were better than ours after tearing us apart.

Do you remember hearing people boo Tom Brady and chant, "We want Drew!" It wasn't cool then and it isn't cool now but it is part of live sporting events.

PS - This kid would have been great to add to the class but hopefully the silver lining is Michigan has another spot available for a defensive player.

i'm guessing it ultimately came down to the weather and proximity to home.  he'll play more away games closer to his region.

good news is that we have WR depth for a couple years.  next year will be another group of 5-star WRs to go around and our depth will show more favorably.

our offense is on the right track to NC caliber, the WRs will come.  its the defense that is the concern right now, and this means another scholly that can go that way...

now that you mention it I am happier that we got Crawford.  Had we received Sammy and then lost out on Crawford I would be more disappointed.  Crawford, at his postition and with his headiness and skill level, is a much greater need for our the team...

....don't make the mistake of thinking WR isn't a major need for this team as well.  We lose Stonum, Odoms AND Hemingway after next year.  Please, tell me who our deep threat will be in 2012?  B/c I definitely can't.  Unless Stokes completely breaks out we're going to need another deep threat which we just don't have on this roster.  Ricardo and Robinson will turn out to be fairly decent receivers, I'm sure, but they will never be the true deep threat that this team really needs.  Just b/c we're set for next year at wideout doesn't mean our WR depth isn't in serious jeopardy.
