OT: Wings game, Bertuzzi penalty

Submitted by UMFanInFlorida on

Did anyone else catch the wings game last night? The wings had a 5-2 lead late in the third and managed to turn it into a 7-6 OT (circus) loss. The Islanders scored 4 goals on a 5 and game major slashing penalty to Tyler Bertuzzi.

I watched the clip and yes there was a retaliatory slash on the upper leg/lower thigh which took Clutterbuck down. It didn’t look like a major penalty infraction to me though. Definitely a minor, maybe a double minor, but I didn’t see intent to injure.

I’m not looking for excuses to justify the wings loss btw. They stink. I’m just curious how others saw that call. I’m sure the league will review it and add commentary too. Thoughts?

edit: corrected 3 goals scored to 4

Sounds like splitting hairs to me. Could be a double minor but not a major? That’s a pretty fine line.

You said it yourself, it was a retaliatory strike. That’s intent right there. Maybe not to injure, but again, that is definitely debatable.

Bottom line is, don’t give up three goals in 5 minutes. That’s pretty awful and cost them the game.

Double minor AT MOST.  That was bullshit, but having a PK that gives up 4 goals in 5 minutes is piss poor....

Time for Holland to move on, bring Stevie Y home!

okay, now that I've seen the clip...I can safely say that may have been one of the worst calls in the history of hockey. And honestly I've never even heard of a five minute major and game misconduct for slashing. that was a two minute penalty, and Clutterbuck should've gotten two for diving. Did Blashill see it live? Sometimes you have to take the fine for the integrity of the game. If you don't throw something on the ice, you have to at the very least call the refs out publicly afterward.

5 for Bertuzzi? Not unless you are giving 5 both ways. That was an obvious dive. Clearly Bertuzzi needed to be penalized. But there are worse slashes every three or four minutes in an average hockey game that go uncalled when players are struggling over pucks. Bertuzzi was just stupid to do it so obviously and deliberately right in front of the refs.

The Red Wings only lost 1 point but the Islanders (a team they are chasing for the wild card) gained two points. A three point swing when the Wings can't afford to lose any points in the standings. The Wings currently have a 2.5% chance of making the playoffs (according to clubprosports.com) so unless they go on a really big run really soon, they will be playing for pride (and an improved spot in the draft lottery).

Dive or not, and light slash or not, you CANNOT be doing that after there is a whistle blown.  Same goes for many other sports.  Yes there are bigger slashes when the puck is in play, but once the whistle is blown you can't do that as a professional paid athlete.
