I think due to some "bubble gum" songs esp in Wham, he was never quite appreciated for as talented as he was.

With Prince, George Michael, and MJ could make the case the 3 biggest male solo acts of the 80s all gone.  Then take away Whitney on the female side and you basically have Madonna that is all that is left from the global superstars of that decade.  Damn.

which IMO could have reached Led Zeppelin-level status if they weren't always infighting.  But perhaps the constant in-and-out fighting had something to do with the edge in the music they did manage to make.

Appetite for Destruction released in 1987 makes them an 80's band.

Agreed. I thought the same thing that they could have been led Zeppelin level. The fail had to also do with Axl and drugs. His spaghetti incident album, he lost his mind. Terrible music. He lives here in NYC and I said if I ever bore into him I'd slug him and tell him they blew it.

I just heard this on NPR myself. Obviously there's something more to this than just dying peacefully at 53. I was never a fan or paid any attention to him other than whatever you'd hear about him now and then by consuming mainstream media, but he's still someone that's been part of the background landscape of public life and music for a long damn time and now there goes another damn one!

I'm really tired of losing so many names I've known for so long, even if they weren't someone I really paid attention to, they're still part of the scene you know and get used to in one sense or another and they oughta still be around! Damn.

Certainly one of the top songs - if not the top one - of my generation of middle school dances where 100 boys stood to one side of the floor and 100 girls stood on the other while 8 "couples" actually danced in the middle.

This is a great rendition of the opening if you like the sax!

I think he had HIV / Pneumonia?  Was he recently getting more sick?

Very ironic that he died on Christmas given the song - perhaps assisted suicide or they decided to let him off the machines today?

I didn't care for that "style" of music, but I did like his songs.

Back in the day, I preferred harder or funkier music, but I'd do a little body movement dance in my seat when Wake Me Up came on.

I admit it.
