OT- Post Christmas shopping ideas
I find myself with some money to spend after Christmas this year, and completely unable to figure out what I want to spend it on. I am so conditioned to saving my money growing up the son of a financial advisor, that I have a hard time spending my money, even around the holidays.
I figured I would open it up to the mgoboard for ideas, Michigan related, or not.
Let's set the budget at $400.

I'm getting golf clubs with my Christmas loot, So i'm going to thread jack.. What kind of clubs should I get, for say, $400-600?

Great question, I've heard you can get really nice clubs that are older versions from 2-3 years ago. I just don't know the ideal place to buy them.

Find a club, and check on Ebay if your going the "used club" route. I have bought "last years model" for dirt cheap many many times and they have come to me looking like brand new.

This is a good route if you have already found the clubs you hit best and but the same ones (as far as loft/shafts/shaft flex etc.).

I actually had really good luck at Golf Galaxy. I had my clubs stolen and managed to get a used set of Titleist 690 CBs for $80! They were in really good shape and lasted for about 3 seasons until I splurged on Nike's top irons last year. Ebay can be really good too, if you know what you're looking for.

Miles of Golf is a very solid idea. Most of my stuff, while very outdated at this juncture, has come from Miles.

be careful when you buy some clubs on ebay you could get a copy not the real thing. i say stick with a golf store. then adjust your price. miles is the place to go.

Go to Miles of Golf and get fit for a new driver. That'll eat your entire budget, but will be worth it. Buy a used set of irons off eBay until you get addicted and then go get fit for the rest of your clubs next year. :D
Getting fit for you clubs is the best thing you can do for your game (better than lessons imo).
More realistically with your budget, buy a used set off eBay. Used top brands >> new discount brands when it comes to golf equipment.

they will fit you for some clubs. you can buy some good ones but not top of the line. they have some good used ones around that range. at least check them out. they are the best in the state. if you want to get a putter fit. see ken johns he is certified way up to the top. worth it.

Find a set of clubs that feel good (weight, swing, shaft flex) and that you hit the best.
I got a brand new set of Tour Edge Bazookas irons for $299 (previous year model) even though I had ~$800 to spend because I hit them better than the Taylor Made/Titleist/Nike/Cobra/Callaway. The extra money allowed me to get a brand new $400 Nike driver and $400 woods for $300 total (again, brand new but 2 year old model).

If you're out of school, you might think about tightening down the wardrobe, where necessary. Some nice threads for work or social.

Regardless, you should buy something that you normally wouldn't justify spending money on. I think that criteria makes for a better self gift.

A bottle of bourbon should take you a while to finish. When i was drinking I would purchase a new bottle every couple of weeks. After a few monts or longer you can have a nice collection. In my opinion if you are drinking more than 2-3 glasses of bourbon on a drinking night you are doing it wrong.

Spend $60 for YNAB (You Need a Budget) software, make a monthly budget, stick to it, and you'll end up with thousands of dollars you thought you didn't have by the end of next year. I've used YNAB for the past few months and wished I had started way way earlier. Amazing tool.
Or for $400 you can maybe buy a standing room only partial view ticket for a 2016 preseason game at Jerry Jones's palace. Yay.

New pillows. They get musty and nasty after two years, and they cost $20 each. Treat yourself.
Swagtastic mouse and keyboard. I made the mistake of buying a wireless mouse and keyboard last go around. Either they ate 2-3 AAs a day or they were poorly manufactured, often-malfunctioning garbage. Make sure they have a wire to your PC!!!!! $60 mouse and $90 keyboard.

Just got these bad boys yesterday in an after Christmas sale and I can't get enough. They aren't cheap (between $200-$300), but the quality is phenomenal, and the best part is that they're made right here in the USA!

Thanks for the recommendation. I've had a few pairs of Danners over the years, and my current favorites are the Brown Crater Rim 6". I hadn't seen the Stumptown collection until you said something. Thanks again!
