OT: New World Record in Super Mario Bros.

Submitted by LLG on

This is meant to be more lighthearted for those on the Board.  Last week, Kosmic set a new world record for Super Mario Bros. speedrunner:  4 minutes, 56 seconds, and 462 miliseconds.

You can watch the video here:

full address:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdrZXWmmvzw

When Kosmic started six years ago, it took him one hour, 10 minutes, and 18 seconds.

You can take a bit of a deeper dive on speedrunning at this article (LINK)

And here is a video of the history of World Record Progression: Super Mario Bros

My questions are:  (1) what were your favorite video games when younger, and (2) what is your favorite video game now (if you have one)?

so we passed the time by running like hell from metal tipped jarts that rained from the sky.

These days, I like Counterstrike. It's the only reliable news source out there.

I actually have followed SMB on the NES speed runs for years, as my personal record is 6:15 and I can still beat it somewhat consistently under 7:30.

My favorite game of all time is Super Mario Brothers 3 and NFL Gameday 99

Current favorite games are FIFA and COD WW2 but I suck at both , especially FIFA.

On original NES.  Played for hours over a period of many years; it never got old.  I now have it in my basement as an arcade game - still not getting old.

As for the post, I have seen this video before, and it is worth the watch for the children of the 80s looking for some impressive nostalgia.

Probably Contra after discovering the secret code, or Ocarina of Time...nowadays it’s probably still Ocarina of Time. Mostly because these open-world games have too much going on for my tastes

One of the cool things about Ocarina Of Time - rather, one of the uncounted cool things about it - was that if you collected certain items in a differing order, you actually could switch up the order of temples as Adult Link a little bit, even though that flexibility was rather limited. The newest Zelda game for the Switch is pretty non-linear - it's actually a great game, I think.

tecmo super bowl-lions; porcher was amazing.

Then to Playstation: crash bandicoot, nba live games, coolboarders, Tony Hawk 2 and 3.
As time went on, didnt touch a controller from 2003-2018. Got my kids xboxs's. After 15 years, son gets me to play COD BO3 Zombies with all the maps! Ill play a couple hours per week with him, but thats it. Its pretty amazing graphics, but I dont have it in me to play that much. Just when kids ask and we surprisingly dont have anything. kids sports are 4 evenings a week and Saturdays, and with nothing played past 9pm, game time is limited. Its pretty crazy how far this world has come gaming wise.

I played the crud out of TSB.

As for today, the Japanese DS remake of Dragon Quest IV.  It's the game I keep going back to when I need a break from reality but don't have the time or energy for a new learning curve.  There's a U.S. version but the localization is downright terrible.

I don't play platformers anymore.  Not enough time to get good at them.

I started with an Atari 2600 and Commodore 64 as a kid.  My parents never got us the original NES, but I did have a game boy.

The Super Nintendo was our first new console and it was in my room during my formative years.  I played the shit out of Super Mario World, Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball, Bill Walsh College football, etc.  I'd still rank Super Mario World as my all time favorite and I love playing it with my kids.

I love the speedrun community. It's competitive, it's generally lighthearted, and sometimes it does good for the community (see AGDQ/SGDQ where they raise millions for great foundations). To answer your questions:

1- Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

2- Over the last year or so, probably Horizon: Zero Dawn

Since I am best in the world at Mario Kart 64 -- Princess Peach handles turns so nicely -- I guess that's the game I like most. When I was a kid, Oregon Trail, Dr. Sbaitso or whatever else the Commodore 64 served up was pretty cool.

Madden 91 was the greatest.  Thurman Thomas for the Bills was so much faster than most other players.

NHL 94.  Can't forget that.  Great graphics and way ahead of its time.

Tony Larussa baseball.

Those were the best sports games of my era.  I played sporadically after that but not so much.  Still enjoy playing the EA Sports games nowadays.

As a kid, Madden/NCAA as a young adult, now it's Clash of Clans or Clash Royale. My kids have claimed the Xbox, but I still retain my phone. If you're interested, there's good Michigan clans out there. I'll shill for my own, MGoblue 2.0 for Clash of Clans and MGoblue for Royale.

RBI Baseball, Contra,  and Tecmo.  Also I really liked the 2k Football games until EA screwed that up along with our own beloved NCAA Football.

Series on PC is my favorite from when I was younger. I’d have to say Fallout New Vegas/Skyrim are my favorite games system games now. Though Clash Royale gets most of my time.

Loved the original Fallout. My favorite had to be Civ 2 and 3. Pulled a lot of all-nighters playing it while at Michigan and afterwards.

More recently, I’ve enjoyed the modern Fallout series, COD, and my son got me into World of Tanks. There’s just not a lot of time for gaming these days.

I used to play King’s Quest on my Tandy 1000 all the time. Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen San Diego were also on the rotation. As far as NES games my favorite was Maniac Mansion. I still play it every now and then. I used to love Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest as well.

Started with the Atari 2600
Moved up to the 5200
Eventually got a Commodore 64
Now have a PC

Obviously the depth, story, and graphic quality of modern games (Witcher, DA series, etc) are much greater than, say, Pitfall on the 2600, but that doesn’t always make them “better” when it comes to how fond one’s memories of playing are.

The most fun I had was playing Ultima IV on C64 for hours on end with a good friend, and losing ourselves in that strange and foreign land called Britannia. Took a few years to finally beat the game, but we did it.
