OT: neat NYT article on Navy kicker

Submitted by Hotel Putingrad on
As we gird our loins for the epic Quick Lane Bowl clash, I thought it would be nice to revisit one of the more indelible moments from this past college football season. Here's a nice feature on the Navy kicker's response to his miss. I'll always root for Army, but I guess I'll root for this guy too. That was an epic Army Navy game. Better than any Bowl game so far.

And yeah I got the Quick Lane bowl going with a beer and grilled knockwurst

The article does a great job of capturing the culture of the service academies (I am a USNA grad). From their very first day, Midshipmen are taught that there are five basic responses to any question or tasking: Yes Sir/Ma'am, No Sir/Ma'am, Aye aye Sir/Ma'am (that's Navy speak for yes I understand and will comply), I'll find out Sir/Ma'am (saying "I don't know" is a major no-no) and No excuse(s) Sir/Ma'am.

It's cool that Moehring wants to be a Naval Aviator where there is a very intense culture of continuous improvement in the pursuit of flawless mission execution. We would typically conduct extensive debriefs of our combat and training missions scouring our videos and notes picking apart all of our execution errors and deriving lessons learned so we could do it better next time. This culture helps improve safety and is also the major discriminator between our air forces (this includes the USAF, USMC and Army) and everyone else in the world.

Who knows - maybe Moehring will end up an Admiral some day.

Go Navy!
