OT: J.D. Martinez traded to Arizona

Submitted by Blue19 on

What the title says, he was traded for Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantar and Josh King. Do not really know that much about them.

Oh really? Did we need 3 Shortstops? Who is ready for the bigs, Lugo? He won't displace Iggy at SS, so we would have to play him at 3B. I'm all for booting Castellanos, but I'm not exactly giddy about a guy who has only hit over .300 once in the minors, in a season in which he got demoted from AA to Adv A.

So for one of the best hitters in the AL we got a mediocre SS/3B and the two more SS who won't be ready for the bigs for another 2-3 years each. We got the D-Backs 4th, 14th, and 25th best prospects. Their #1 prospect is the 68th ranked prospect in the world. This is not a good farm system. For that we gave a WS contender a .300, 30 HR guy.

This is a despicable trade.

Why?

Because the Tigers received a higher rated prospect, mid-rated prospect and a low-rated prospect from one of the very few farm systems that is worse than the Tigers. The highest rated prospect has been falling the down the D'Backs farm rankings and never was a Top-50ish guy anyway.

Two weeks before the deadline, possessing the top bat on the market, and Avila gets three guys who most likely top out at Dixon Machado/Andrew Romine types.

Of course, its prospects, so we may be pleasantly surprised. But on the surface with the info we have now.....yeeeeesh.

His career that consists of 68 games played? He is besting our current 2B in BA, OBP, SLG, and OPS, his FP is over .950 and his Range Factor is better than Ian's. He's 10 years younger than Kinsler.

I'm not predicting Machado will be a career .310 hitter and golden glove winner, but the idea that he's vastly worse than the current version of Kinsler is verifiably false. He's younger, he's cheaper, and in terms of total value he's probably not worse than Kinsler. He can be our 2B.

When facts and stats get in the way of my argument too.  Chris Shelton's first 69 games in his first full MLB season he was batting .331 with 12 homeruns and an OBP .398, SLG .555 and an OPS .953.  Fair to say that wasn't very indicative of how well he could continue to hit in the majors. Anthony Rizzo, after his first 49 MLB games had a stat line consisting of BA of .141, OBP .281, SLG .242 OPS .523.  Jim Thome, after 67 games had an BA of .220 and had only hit 3 home runs....so no, 60+ games is not plenty of time to show that one person can hit in MLB.

I did not contradict myself.

He used a career statistic, to which my response was that his career has not been long enough to consider that career statistic (not to mention that the statistic he gave isn't necessarily important). I was comparing Machado and Kinsler's 2017 statistics, not Machado's career averages to Kinsler's.

Had I compared their career averages and then said that he hasn't played in enough games to have a significant sample size, then you would be correct.

Arizona's farm system stinks. The best player Detroit received in the deal doesn't project to be much more than an average bat and solid defender at 3B if he sticks there. Not surprised we managed to get such a modest return considering how the franchise leaders have functioned recently.

Last I checked, Castellanos is our 3B and Iglesias will likely be gone.  So essentially Avila is hoping that one of these 3 can become our SS.  Because, of course, buying 3 shitty things is always better than buying 1.  I need to remember to invite Avila to my fantasy baseball league next year so I can fleece him.

I thought we have Iglesias through 2019, but I'm not sure if there is an option or someway we could part with him early next year? I think Iglesias has enough fielding and athleticism on the basepath that he is valuable, so long as he is hitting .250. Although, by the end of 2019 it would be nice to have a younger option.

Yeah, I wasn't projecting that Lugo was going to replace Castellanos. I'd even wager that Lugo never plays an inning at 3B for Detroit. Not sure what the Tiger's plans are for Iglesias once his contract is up, but I'd be surprised if Alcantara was an upgrade over Iggy at any point. King is too far off to project.

But yes, Avila is trash. We're in for a long, brutal rebuild if he is running the show.

That is a dog shit deal.

Lugo has no power and no speed.

Alcantara is 5'9'' with no offensive skills.

King the same.  Garbage.

And ALL OF THEM ARE SHORTSTOPS!

None of the guys were rated by Keith Law in his top 8 for their organization.  We just traded an All-Star for three bit players.  Remember two years ago that Dombrowski we traded Cespedes for Fulmer.

This is a dumb move this far from the trade deadline.  Either the team wins a couple more games to be 3-4 games out heading into August, or they trade guys to teams really desperate in the hours before the deadline.

There's a reason why he bounced from Oakland to Boston to Detroit.  Plus, he was JD's age when we traded him in 2015.

The reason JD wasn't traded in the offseason was because Mr. I was still alive and they couldn't go into full sell mode with him still around.  The selloff was announced after last season, then it stopped after Maybin was traded for a minor league pitcher with a low ceiling.
