Official: Asst. Coach Donlon gone to Northwestern and Chicago area
It's official: As expected, Billy Donlon was announced as an Assistant Coach at Northwestern under Chris Collins. This is a loss, but I trust Beilein will find a solid coach to replace Donlon. Still hurts.

We really need to find a coach or two here. This can't be good for recruiting. Not only did we lose two coaches who had built relationships with prospects but we currently have no one filling their shoes on the recruiting trail.
I don't know man. That's kind of a controversial opinion.
You're right, were going to miss on every recruit regardless of who the assistants are since we still have Beilein.

Maizen.
Tom Crean it is for one year.
and Thad Matta?
I don't know that I'd worry about it too much, but if the Kohl's on Lohr Road suddenly is dangerously low on ill-fitting pants, you might actually have inadvertantly answered the question everyone had.
Jokes aside, it is nice to see Beilein's staff in demand - hopefully, we can fill those positions well.

Ah, nuts.
Remember when we hardly ever lost assistants? That sucked way worse than losing them more frequently. Of course I'm sad to see Donlon leave, but glad to see Beilein's assistant coaches be viewed as hot commodities.
I think that says more about the previous assistance than anything else
I don't give a dann who his friend is. How the hell did we lose a coach to NW?
The underrated part of this thread is that it lets us know which area he is going to
I mean, I was worried he was going to be moving to Southern Wisconsin. Kenosha is up and coming and all, but that commute sucks.
The mobility, both with early entry to the NBA, transfers to other programs, and now coaches, is good for Michigan. What Beilein has done, the moving on of coaches to head coaching positions, the number of first round draft picks, all make Michigan attractive.
Personally, I'm wondering if there are former guys who played for Beilein who would be good as assistant coaches. Whether from West Virginia, or from Michigan, I would think that some of his former players might be good in the coaching ranks.
Jim Harbaugh hired Jay, why can't John Beilein hire Patrick?
Who were Beilein's original assistants when he was hired, the guys Bacari and Lavall and Meyer ended up replacing?
I don't know who else we had.
I think John Mahoney was the other.
I see the posts above mention 2 of them (Dunn and Mahoney). But the one that wasn't mentioned that relates most to today is Mike Jackson. He was the last assistant to leave for another assistant post at a Big Ten school (Purdue). Beilein retained him as a holdover from Tommy Amaker's staff.
Beilein had to turnover his entire staff that year in 2010 as Jackson left late in the hiring cycle in June. Michigan replaced him with LaVall Jordan. And Western Michigan HC Steve Hawkins was not pleased, accusing Beilein of "tampering" (not sure how that applies to assistants)

That was bugging me for a while and my Google searches were not productive.
Mike Jackson was one, IIRC.
I'm firmly on the Tom Crean train.
I think it would be cool to have Harbaugh at basketball games, plus with Crean we'd get all kinds of wacky antics.
And you could have Archie Miller running after Crean after a M vs IU game, accusing him of wrecking the IU program.
get near the Harbaugh cabal. The brothers rants against Indiana after they fired Crean showed that family is thicker than reality.
Screw it. Bring in Tom Crean for one of the open spots.
No worries here.
offers out there that would meet this description. If you can't hint at who, how about when?
Staff has been informed.
deserves some good news.
If you know what I'm saying.
Did this just happen? I know there were a couple who would qualify who were on campus this past weekend
I have no inside info but I'd be very surprised if he's talking about anyone other than Pete Nance.
Doesn't Nance have a visit with Northwestern lined up? Seems odd that he'd commit in advance but who knows.
I've heard it's Johns.
Are you in Bolivia or time out?
Neither? LSA took away all my points for some reason.
"For some reason."
Being inflmmatory was what I was told. People don't want their safe space interrupted.
It's Brandon Johns.
Are you kidding? That would be a HUGE pickup with him living right down the road from the Breslin Center. Any idea when he'll be making an announcement?
He has already communicated his intentions.
I have a few sources of my own.
This makes me happy.
Consider Jalen Rose or Juwan Howard from the Miami Heat? Sounds odd but they know BBall and would be great recruiters.
Tom Crean and Matta for a fired big ten coaches duo.
This is equivalent to the provost at UM leaving to be provost at Oklahoma. Why would he accept a lower position?
Sort of, but maybe John B told Billy that he had 5 years of coaching at Michigan. Collins may have told Donlon that he will leave NW (for the right offer) after the year and could leave Donlon as the HC with brand new facilities in Chicago.
Imagine the provost was from Norman and his dad was previously the provost at Oklahoma.
