MSU/Nassar: Nassar allowed to see patients during 2014 investigation
2014? The school said they had no knowledge that Nassar was accused of anything until 2016.
I have nothing else to add. Just sad about the situation. Screw the NCAA, I hope the real authorities put a banhammer on that school.

I have it on good authority that ESPN is in the final stages of putting together an expose on how losely the MSU athletic programs are run in general with Nassar as the centerpice.
Shit will hit fan soon.

Sparty fans have been giving us crap about Gibbons for years. It'd be nice to not hear about that anymore.
December 20th, 2017 at 9:09 AM ^
Gibbons was a shit hole.
Payne was idolized by the University for befriending that little girl who passed away from cancer. Which, is great. I'm sure that girl had a better few months because of his friendship. Doesn't eliminate his transgressions.
December 19th, 2017 at 8:44 PM ^
I have to say, I sincerely hope it isn’t as bad as we think it could be. That would mean a crazy number of victims.

and, let's just say, a leader in protecting women. This is the perfect story for ESPN to dive into -- they have been interviewing folks up there en masse. It will take their president down IMO..
December 20th, 2017 at 10:51 AM ^
and that ESPN can get it to air on ABC or something. Because as it stands no one in the national media gives a fuck about a doctor molesting 100's of patients and a university seemingly covering it up.
If this shit happened in Ann Arbor the story would be on the BBC, AFP, Reuters, and North Korean State Television.
December 20th, 2017 at 11:44 AM ^
"The Michigan Difference", to be sure.
30 minutes of extra stretching got more national coverage than Nassar.
It boggles the mind
December 19th, 2017 at 9:13 PM ^
"Nassar faces 28 criminal charges and seven lawsuits involving sexual assault claims from at least 95 women and girls,"
Considering how systematically MSU and TeamUSA gymnastics people dismissed the complaints going back to 1996, I'll bet the true number of victims is well north of 100.
By that horrible metric alone, Nassar is much worse than Sandusky.

I don't know what MSU was thinking. Was there something to guy by keeping that guy around? The fame of having a famous doctor around? I know it's easier to second guess than to make the decision in the moment, but I just don't understand how you screw this one up
December 19th, 2017 at 7:48 PM ^
If they can screw that up, they can screw up anything.

"In a 2014 email to a prospect, then-gymnastics coach Klages listed several key points about MSU. Among them was the team doctor.
"We have Larry Nassar!" Klages wrote. "Enough said about that!"

"And the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office ultimately cleared Nassar of any criminal wrongdoing involving the patient despite a request from MSU police that Nassar be charged with sexual assault."
SMH
"The woman said Nassar cupped her buttocks and massaged her breast and vaginal area. She added that Nassar became sexually aroused and that the appointment didn’t end until she physically removed his hands from her.
The Title IX investigator relied on the opinions of four medical experts who all worked for MSU and had close ties to Nassar in reaching the conclusion that the woman received a medical procedure and wasn't sexually assaulted. The woman has asked MSU to reopen her Title IX investigation; the university declined because she is suing."
On what goddamn planet does fondling anybody's rear end and breasts constitute a "medical procedure?" What the fuck is wrong with these people? I swear to god it's just as bad as Sandusky.

It appears that we are going to have two institutions that have problems with this issue. At what point do we consider alternative conferences?
December 19th, 2017 at 8:16 PM ^
December 20th, 2017 at 1:12 PM ^
I ABSOLUTELY agree. I was of the opinion that psu should have been dropped as a member of the B1G, but sadly when it comes to conference-based athletics, money wins out over simply doing what is right. msu? I don't imagine they have the same financial stamp as psu, but the feckless B1G administration lacks the spine to take actions that makes sense. I really dislike the look this gives the conference. If there is to be a dark side to the conference, I much prefer the stink of bagmen.

I didn't think there was an investigation into Sandusky. Many people at MSU knew about the allegations. Also, while the "police" are trying to figure out if the guy molested women, the school let him go back to working intimately with female bodies. Yep, good logic there. No surprise there were new assaults that came after they let him go back to work. They basically approved him to sexually assault women.
December 19th, 2017 at 8:18 PM ^
100% right. Klages in particular is just a goddamn cretinous monster.
December 20th, 2017 at 8:47 AM ^
Yeah, the "allowed to go back to work on female patients as the investigation was ongoing" is just shocking to me. If a cop is accused of assaulting someone, and even if this is based on flimsy evidence, it is SOP that the cop is pulled off the street and put on "desk duty" until the investigation is concluded. But somehow, a guy accused of sexual assault is allowed to go back to examining female patients during the investigation of this act? Wow, that seems like an extremely bad idea and a massive lapse in decision making...

Not defending Nassar whatsoever here since he went beyond what's appropriate, but so far in med school we did learn a myofascial release of the sacrotuberous ligament, which essentially did involve placing hands on the rear end. Slightly awkward in class since we were doing it on each other, and I can easily understand how a patient might feel uncomfortable by it. Several of the docs who mentored me and inspired me to go into medicine came from MSU med, and it's a shame how Nassar represented the school and hurt all those individuals unbefitting of the oath he swore.
December 20th, 2017 at 11:15 AM ^
and were you trained it's acceptable to perform this procedure without medical gloves?
December 20th, 2017 at 4:43 PM ^
No gloves. You're not being exposed to any fluids, and we were wearing clothing over this region (guys were shirtless and girls wore sports bras).
December 20th, 2017 at 9:16 AM ^
Thos 4 medical experts were the other doctors working at MSU Sports Medicine (I think) with Nassar.
I'm from EL and my parents still live there. Have been to MSU Sports Medicine many times for surgeries and follow up appointments (never met Nassar, but my sister did - and no she wasn't assaulted because it was a hand injury) and there were pictures of the US Gymnastics team all over the place along with all of the MSU sports teams.
My father was scheduled to have his biceps tendon operated on by one of those doctors last year. After he heard this he decided to drive to Grand Rapids to get the surgery.
