Minnesota Center Reggie Lynch Suspended for Sexual Assault
Minnesota Basketball's star center Reggie Lynch was suspended until August 1st, 2020 for a sexual assault that occurred in 2016. You can read more about it here.
Minnesota was seen as one of the main contenders in the Big Ten this year, but have not lived up to expectations and now they are losing, arguably, their best player. The rough season for the Big Ten continues.

He's a senior, so that's a career-ending suspension. Not sure why it would go an extra two years beyond?

It's the university suspending him, not the athletic department. I would assume it means the woman (or women, allegedly) he's assaulted will be off campus by that time.

Very shocked to see a member of the Pitino family involved in something like this.

I know what you're trying to say, but I wouldn't consider anything about this situation to be anything close to wonderful.

Besides the whole "why now" making little sense, I would like to know the logic behind determining what actions are bad enough to get suspended and banned from campus for two years but aren't bad enough to be kicked out of school or off the team.

Minnesota's athletic department has a serious culture problem with regards to sexual assault, as does the Pitino family. That explains the latter.
Why not expel him is a fair question though.

In terms of the administration following procedures, conducting investigations, and handing out real punishments for bad behavior, I think they’ve actually been pretty good.

I'd say Lynch was more their fourth best player, behind Jordan Murphy (current B1G leader in ppg and rpg), Nate Mason, and Amir Coffey. The Gophers will definitely miss his length near the basket as he was a great shot-blocker and above-average rebounder so it's still a big loss. Without him, teams can now go right to the rim with little fear of their shot being rejected or altered.

of the year. I know those awards tend to overvalue basic stats, but I think fans tend to undervalue defensive stars.

I probably undervalued some of his defensive presence due to Jordan Murphy and the incredible work he does on the boards. And as TB2003 pointed out below I didn't give enough credit to Lynch's offense versus Amir Coffey's.
So yeah, very big loss.

Probably behind Murphy and Mason but definitely ahead of Coffey because of his shot blocking (which directly leads to Minn having the 11th best 2pt defense in the country), rebouding and better offensive efficiency than Coffey (on only slightly lower usage).

I probably undervalued his defensive presence. His shot-blocking is Bamba-esque (or Bamba's is Lynch-esque). Either way, this is a very big loss.

The article I read on ESPN said that, according to Richard Pitino, Lynch is going to appeal the University's decision.

for the added info. I wonder about the nature of the appeals process (is there any independent arbitrator, cross-examination, etc.), the timeliness of any appeals decision and his status while the process is ongoing. I've followed the entire sordid sexual assault crusade on college campuses. The accused are fighting back with lawsuits and often winning. And there is a new policy favoring due process at the Department of Education.
Interestingly, my post was downvoted by somebody who believes in kangaroo courts, lol.

that he was a serial rapist, and they've been covering it up (the latest in a string of institutions to do so in his case). They know this thing would be a really ugly shitstorm if they didn't distance themselves from this guy right away (and hopefully it still will be, and everyone who covered up for him and protected him will be exposed). And he's a chickenshit coward who won't dare bring a lawsuit, because he knows if he does, all of his past history will be all over the national media. He knows he's caught out now, and he's as eager for this to fade away as Minnesota is.
But go ahead, keep being an apologist for him.
