Michigan cowbell rhythm - TRY #2

Submitted by bdsisme on

With the first home game fast approaching, Michigan fans have begun to break out their cowbells. My friends and I have been arguing about the correct rhythm for the Michigan cowbell strike, and we need MGoUsers to weigh in on this topic.

A few of us think the rhythm in the YouTube video embedded below is correct. Meanwhile, others have commented that it is missing a beat (no pun intended) towards the middle of the chorus(?). What's your opinion? Right, wrong, or close enough?

(embedding in OP is harder than MRob's abs, see first reply)

EDIT: Try #1 was an abomination; Try #2 is 26 posts down -- keep the comments coming!

I've been in the student section for the last 3 years, and I think this is mostly because they started micing the band. There is a small delay between when the band is playing, and when it comes through the speakers. You are hearing two different versions, one playing about 2 beats after the other, and it is hard to keep time. I've taken to watching the band director, otherwise I really can't tell where they are in the song.

Definitely wrong, as mentioned above.

Side question: For the last verse are you in favor of the seven-hit version:

Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun

Or the the nine hit version:

Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun-dun-dun, da-dun.

I've always favored the simple seven hit version because I think the last rendition is aimed at getting the fans to clap and shout and I don't like the cowbell taking away from it.

The best rendition of the cowbell I ever heard was at Ryan Field at the Northwestern Michigan game two years ago. It was just a really good sounding cowbell, and the guy's timing was great. Not too much, not too little.

It should be "tap tap tap taptap tap taptap tap tap tap tap taptap go blue". For the last verse I'm partial to "tap tap tap tap taptaptap taptap".

My friend has taken your comments into serious consideration, and is deeply sorry for offending the masses.  He did his best to refine his technique, adhering to the comments by EZ Bud, BrewCityBlue, and ThadMattasagoblin (amongst others).

His new-and-hopefully-improved version:

Whaddya think?  He'll keep at it until it's right!
