META: Number of points to start a thread

Submitted by Julian on

I and many others believe that the amount of points needed to start a thread should be raised. That troll just showed us how easy it is to create an account and, in thirty minutes, gain 100 points to start a ridiculous thread, which caused me to start trembling for 15 seconds. My suggestion would be 1000 points at the bare minimum. Hope you guys will be open to changing this. Thanks.

For a couple minutes. Don’t have 2k, what if I have insider information about what Shea Patterson likes to eat for breakfast,(hint: it’s not pieces of shit like you, not you per se, you get the joke) Guess you will be left to wonder...

Right. If I had urgent inside info I could email Brian or someone (at my  peril).

While I'm a lowbie myself, I just watched this board anon for a long time before creating an account, so I don't know how hurt any low post person would get at not being able to post a thread. I sort of support a 2k cap, but know a few guys who have had accounts here for years and have probably posted twice in that time on average, wiith 25- 50 upvotes each time. (Only posting when they really have something good to say and it just hasn't been said yet).

I'm not sure how easy it would be, but I feel if you have had a non-banned account for 5 years, you should be able to create a thread if you have something to say.

[...it might actually solve the issue for all problem types.  Down-vote double-ish post if you must...]

Freeze Tag:

What about setting a negative minimum point total on either an account, or per post {EDIT: Or per thread you started...this Julian account would be toast by now}??  Slip up, get too many negs on your account, or on a single post (say, -40ish trips the wire, as an example) and your account can live, but you can't post until a mod unfreezes you.  Same concept could easily be applied w/ full account totals- get too many negs and you're frozen until someone with authority to unfreeze you does so.

Basically, we're all good enough to spot the fakes that they'd be effectively banned by user 'curation'.  And if the point total is enough, it prevents trolls from gaming the system to get a user artificially frozen because no one is going to manage 40ish accounts just to take down single users.

And, this kind of process would naturally sift the likely b.s. right to the top, making the mods jobs a lot easier- they don't have to find a needle in the haystack- instead, the haystack finds the suspected needles for you to examine, validate, and then obliterate.

Also, new users w/ genuine intent would be more mindful of whatever they have the impulse to post- nobody wants to whoopsy into being banned because their post was no more valuable than that of the trolls...

Kind of feel like this might be the airtight solution to all our troll problems...no?

If you look at the majority of bad posts right now, they are coming from posters within the 100-1000 range. There are plenty of good posts that have been made by users between 1000 and 2000 points.

Take this post, for example:

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/things-i-was-told-last-night-re-ole-miss-trio

The user who made this thread only had ~1100 points before he made this. These are the type of posts that make the board awesome. Quality, not quantity will attract more good users and less trolls.

what about looking at their previous thread? If someone starts a bad topic and gets negged for it, maybe some time should have to pass before they can start another one. They'd earn a black flag or a red lock or whatever. Maybe you give them one mulligan. There's a lot of different ways to work out the details.

Been saying that for years but at the same time, I remember how much the board changed after it went from 0 to 100. I think you would see most of the threads being created by the same 4 people or an entire board of posts from WD.

500 would be better.

Not only just points, I think you should have an account for a couple of months before you can start a thread. We've seen so many people get into the thousands in just a couple of days.

And u start a thread with just over 200. Cool story bro. Also, Franklin Hatchett had over 2k and alot of people were pissed he was starting threads. Let the Mods decide and stop tryin to suck up and gain points.
