Meta: FYI - Brian Tweeted that UFR is coming late
For those of you not on Twitter, Brian tweeted that he had a spreadsheet crash and thus UFR is getting delayed.
So... since we don't want to do any actual work on a Wednesday with a pending UFR... Who's your guess for highest rated? Speights DSR%? How about RPS - how bad did Harbaugh and Dr. Blitz beat up on the SharkF***er and Nussmeir? Grades you're most interested in?

Very interested in the OL in general. Also all the TEs, Wheatley seemed to get the most snaps.

Also if Brian agrees that Kugler was good/the best lineman
September 6th, 2017 at 10:11 AM ^
My guess is that Cole is Brian's highest rated, but that Kugler was the coaches' "best rated relative to expectations"

At what point is a sack not REALLY the falut of the LT or whoever is blocking? For example, Cole has the DE blocked for ~4 seconds, but Speight doesn't get the ball out. Will Cole still get dinged for that?
I only ask because I think (can't remember too well) that one of Cole's sacks came on a play that Speight held the ball a little longer than he should have.

that he means it--and not "relative to expectations" either. Also that if Brian disagrees with Harbaugh on who was the best OL it really doesn't matter does it? Meaning now that we know Harbaugh said Kugler graded the highest, anyone else's opinion of the Line is not relevant. (this is no knock on Brian at all)
September 6th, 2017 at 3:52 PM ^
harbaugh stated kugler graded out #1, at least the quote i saw - and i also assume thats with no qualifiers, kugler just played best of the 5. though in doing so he also looked great relative to fans expectations so i guess theres that.
harbaugh seemed mostly pleased with the OL play and likes the starting point with uf game as building block. and i agree. couldve been much worse given the experience level and the opponent, etc. they have much to improve. but some real positives and kugler tops the list. it wasnt fsu or bama but kugler held his own and looked confident...great news if hes a reliable player, center is always key

Brian's analysis is a datapoint. He's given himself the caveat that he doesn't know the play call and isn't infallible. However he has been doing this professionally for a decade.
Harbaugh spoke at a press conference, saying that Kugler was the best means some or all of:
- Kugler was the best
- Kugler needed to hear he was the best (motivation)
- Cole/Bredeson/Etc. needed to hear Kugler was the best (motivation)
When Harbaugh offers "real" info to the media there's almost always something behind it. What problem is another set of eyes?

What Brian 's review will show. But I tracked Kugler in slow motion and he was excellent in my opinion, just about as good a game as I can recall from a center over the past couple of years.

Highest rated:
Defense is going to be Bush, Gary, or Hurst.
Offense will be Kugler and Isaac.
DSR: 64

I suspect he'll be fine but unspectacular. A cursory rewatch suggested to me that there were only a few plays he really had a chance to be involved in and he was fine. His destruction of a double-team was a factor in the Winovich sack td play. However, there weren't a lot of wow moments compared to, say, Hurst (+3 on that screen snuff is a dead lock) and Bush.

broadcast which isn't necessarilly a bad thing for a safety. After re-watching the game it was very apparent he was very, very solid (as was Metellus). We might have the best safety duo (trio if you want to count Hudson) that I can remember at UM.
I absolutely love this defense and my guess is recruits will agree.

RPS is going to be at or near the all time record, whatever that is. Even the Florida fans are saying essentially the same thing. And their coach thinks it's just cause our guys are stronger, or something.
September 6th, 2017 at 9:57 AM ^
Offense got RPS-'ed pretty good on a lot of runs. They had run blitzes or slants on that gave the blocking scheme no chance of succeeding a few times. On the other hand, these were also how they got burned on the cutback runs that did go big against them.
Defense is going to be a pretty comprehensive win but amplitude was small with FL only running ~50 plays.
September 6th, 2017 at 11:09 AM ^
Might lose a few RPS points on some of our running plays, but I have to figure +2 or +3 each for the touchdown bomb to Black and the play where we made their DBs run into each other but then Speight missed the throw.
September 6th, 2017 at 11:33 AM ^
Not to mention the + RPS from picking up third and 14s with draw plays.

Although I wonder if Brian will stop charting it or not ding points for when Michigan went up 9 and ran clock. I feel like he doesn't take points for that.

and Tolbert has to be given a lot of credit. A UM alumn friend whose husband is a retired Navy pilot lives in Annapolis and told me to ecpect great things out of him -- he was loved at the USNA.

Gil, Metelus, Ulizio, McKeon all the dudes that came in with little fanfare who look like contributors and some, possible stars. If the staff is hitting on these guys now, especially early in their careers, lot of teams are going to have a real bad time playing Michigan in the weeks/years ahead.

Highest rated defense: Bush
Highest rated offense: I guess Kugler since Harbaugh said he was their highest graded OL.
DSR: 55
RPS: Hahahahahaha

Same. This made me LOL. I kid you not, ever since I heard this line on Thomas the Train, I drop it on my kids at least once a day. They hate it.

Spreadsheet crash? What spreadsheet is he using? The recent versions of Excel saves automatically. I would be happy to donate Excel 2016 to prevent this from happening again.

aww, come on guys - it's so simple. maybe you need a refresher course? it's all ball bearings nowadays.

Definitely interested in seeing what he says about the right side of the O-line, but have to confess that I'm most interested in how Gary grades out.
And - dammit! - I don't want to wait.
