MBB: Rutgers Upsets #15 Seton Hall, Indiana upsets ND

Submitted by Bambi on
Rutgers upset #15 Seton Hall today in basketball 71-65. As much as we shit on them this is one of the best non-conference wins the B1G has gotten all year. Rutgers is now 10-3 with losses to MSU, Minnesota and FSU and looks to be a tough team in the down B1G this year. Indiana just upset ND in OT as well. Between these and Purdue beating Butler todays been a good day for the B1G.

However, I watched a chunk of the 1st half and was not super impressed with Seton Hall even as they were up big. A lot of hero ball and 1 on 1 isos - vs playing good team ball.

It’s about time RU stops being the RPI Black Hole of the conference- good for them.

tied with ND in overtime.  Would be another huge nonconference win for the B1G.

And Juwan Morgan, the guy that killed Wagner, has been absolutely unstoppable so that makes me feel better.

EDIT: What a finish!!! Game of the year so far in college basketball, with Gus Johnson calling it.  Man, I love college bball.

Normally I’d say, I don’t give a shit about Rutgers bball, but after watching them play FSU (good game on currently between Okie St. and FSU for the college hoops junkies, along with a half dozen other games) and MSU tough (and winning today) I’d say they’re now a team to take seriously, in league play. RU moves to 10-3 and sits at 90 in the KenPom, before factoring today’s big win. Can’t sleep on them — could be evolving like PSU hoops.

They really have been solid this year. And their loss to MSU was closer than the 10 point final score; they were within 5 with 3 minutes to go. That said, this particular game mist have been pretty ugly, since Rutgers won by 6 despite shooting 34% and 64% from the line, while Seton Hall show 54% from the line and 41% overall.

The new coach has been great for Rutgers. They've been improving consistently and I don't think they'll be an easy win for anyone anymore. I think they can make it to the NIT this year hopefully, and have a winning record.

I was at the game.  As Bronx Blue pointed out, Rutgers only shot 34% from the field and 64% on free throws.   Rutgers gritted this one out with 19 offensive rebounds, 10 steals and 6 blocks and forced 18 turnovers.  Rutgers held Seton Hall to 23 points in the second half.  One thing for sure is Rutgers will bring the effort when Michigan plays them.  They play hard.

Nice, I thought I was going to have to go to the Rutgers boards to get my Rutgers basketball updates. Good thing I don’t have to bother doing that. Anyone have any other basketball scores to share while we’re at it so I don’t have to go elsewhere?

I listened to an analyst a few years back discuss the black hole that is Rutgers.  He made a compelling case that Rutgers could be very good at basketball given their access to the NY talent market and to a lesser extent Philly.

Basketball doesn't require as many stars as other sports to be successful, just less misses.  2 or 3 players can get a team to the sweet 16 with decent coaching.
