MBB Commit David DeJulius Scores 42, Rallies to Beat Clarkston.

Submitted by All Day on

DeJulius scores 42, 17 in the 4th quarter and beats top-ranked Clarkston after being down 20 in the second half. MSU commit Foster Loyer had 21 for Clarkston.

Edit: also scored 37 last night.

In unrelated news, Tai Streets' coached team had their game called early against IL's top ranked team and was apparently screaming at the opposing head coach.

an honor roll student, humble, religious, respectful and loving towards family and others.  He should be an asset to the university.

I think he's underrated on the basketball court as well.  He has all the skills and the right attitude and smarts to succeed at the next level.

This recruiting class is shaping up to be something special, even better than it's ranked.

they are down to 9th and will continue to drop if  teams can take as many players as we have.

One thing I don't understand is how can MSU have a higher per player average then us and have the same number of players, but be a spot behind us.  Somebody isn't very good at math apparently.

absolutely dominant performance in every way imaginable. Multiple triples off the bounce after crossing defenders up, made Loyer fall with a behind the back dribble and then reverse layup, countless floaters in the lane after changing speeds...............just a truly special performance.

I talked to him before the game and he told me he was going to 'kill Loyer'..........felt a bit disrespected with a decent portion of local media annointing Loyer as Mr. Basketball. Loyer is a fine prospect, but in all seriousness, it didn't look as if he was on the same level as Dave tonight.

That video was great to watch. Couple that with the fire he clearly has burning with his comment on Loyer and it seems we may have a few "GTF off my court!" moments in the future. If Loyer does get annointed Mr. Basketball as a sort of team MVP award, I'd venture a bet Mr. DeJulius makes him regret it regularly, on national television.

is going to be a bust. Great passer and a decent shooter but too small for big time college ball.

DeJulius sounds like a good player. Nice to see JB recruiting detroit.

I'm not a huge fan of Currie's game, and wasn't all that thrilled with the pick-up at the time. Not to say he's not a talented prospect, because he certainly has some good facets to his game, outside shooting in particular. Also has very good hands (easily handled dumpoffs from Loyer and co.)

He may have dropped 20 & 10 (didn't keep track), but it was an uninspiring 20 if that makes. sense. Couldn't finish at the rim in post-iso situations, consistently knocked off his spots when attempting to establish position, lost a fair amount of contested rebounds to players 3-5 inches smaller than him. Doesn't offer any rim protection. Most of his production was off dumpoffs created by Loyer and Clarkston guards penetrating and EEVP commitment to trapping on the perimeter.

Currie reminds me a ton of Mark Donnal............good outside shooter that doesn't make the sort of impact on the game that you'd like, due in large part to a lack of athleticism, motor and grit.

I love that he was out to kill that little guy from the other team.

Don't for a second think that the local media doesn't want to give the Mr. Basketball Trophy to a non-Michigan guy after Livers got it last year.

They can't have their beloved team not be front and center.   I mean this same media is knowledgable of all the disgusting off the field antics going on and reports on none of it.

It’s crazy that next year’s class is supposed to be the one that is amazing and carries our team for years to come but this year we have seen multiple freshmen and sophomores play really well in actual games that matter. Our future is extremely bright. It’s as if Beilein knows what he’s doing and is completely fine with the future of this team. Crazy.

Was at the game as well and Matt D is spot on.

Clarkston jumped out to quick lead, was up about 20 at half.
EEEP cut lead to 10 at end of 3 with pressure, physical play and basically taking Loyer out.

Up until this point, I thought Loyer was the better overall player. But then the 4th quarter happened.

DeJulius was unreal. Hit three step back 3’s in a row. The 4th, from about half court, was in and out.
Had two floaters after sick cross overs. Couple assists. Amazing. Can’t wait to see him at M.

Currie: Matt D is again spot on. I was not impressed and surprised he had 20 and 10. He’s not a B10 player. Don’t recall him shooting from outside. He has no inside game other than catching dump offs.

Loyer is very good. Nice shot, great vision, good handle. I was most impressed with how he handled physical play despite his size. EEEP relatively shut him down in second half tho and down the stretch Loyer tried to take control but missed a few key shots.

FYI DeJulius and Loyer are same height but DeJulius probably has 15-20 pounds on him

the best part of the game was the look on Tom Izzo's face during the 4th quarter when Dave absolutely abused the entire Clarkston team................at one point he put his face down and shook his head as if to say 'I have to deal with this for 4 years, Lord help me'

Usually refrain from Izzo talk, but couldn't help myself on this one.

style(recruit rankings and HYPE) over substance once again.  DeJulius is on another level from Loyer as a player, and that's not likely to change going forward.  They are somewhat close skill wise now, they both play with a high bball IQ, but by all accounts, DDJ is bigger, stronger, and a better athlete than Foster is or is going to be.

4th quarter was a good indicator of that, there wasn't anyone on Clarkston's team who could slow down DDJ once he got going, while on the other end, DDJ was able completely shut down Loyer when matched up with him defensively.  That says something about something.

is the ability to create his own shot off the bounce, his change of direction is just far superior to anything Loyer has in his bag. Athletically, Dave is certainlyl stronger, but the two are very similar in terms of straight line speed, lateral agility and first step acceleration. Neither are very good that way.................the huge distinction is Dave's ability to change speed and direction with the ball.  He can get anywhere he wants on the court based on his ability to keep a defender off balance consistently.

Loyer specializes in a hard dribble one way, stopping on a dime, letting his defender fly by, before he takes a jumpshot. Crafty player for sure, that is a great shooter with excellent vision off the ball screen. Really more of an undersized SG with some ball skills, but he's going to be very challenged as on ball player at the next level trying to handle pressure defense.

Yeah DDJ ability to change direction will be exciting to watch at M. His 4th Q play was unreal, looked a lot like Burke. Such a great fit for Coach B. Started off cold tho, missed way too many throws.

Loyer fits Izzo system well too. Those cross court passes won’t work at next level tho.

Both have quick release. DDJ absolutely can create his own shot and has more range. I usually don’t get too excited over recruits but that 4th quarter....

Loyer had a nice pull up jumper with DDJ in his face. Good points Matt on him being an undersized SG. I bet he makes a good PG at State with some S&C.

Bryce Washington and Harland Beverly looked decent in other game. Both very athletic. Use their body well. I thought Bryce played better.

IMO, both don’t shoot well enough for SG and don’t have handle for PG.

doesn't shoot the ball particularly well from distance, doesn't produce very much in half court settings. Very good athlete that is explosive in transition, has some creating abilities off the dribble but also very TO prone with sloppy, one-hand passes.

Essentially a SF in the body of a combo-guard, as he's only a legit 6'2 or so.
