Final Rivals 100/250 for 2018

Submitted by Magnus on

Rivals has released the final 2018 rankings (LINK).

I listed all the guys that Michigan was targeting in the top 100 (LINK) and #101-250 (LINK).

If we can hold onto him, Otis Reese is the top-rated guy. Aidan Hutchinson made a jump to #129 overall, presumably based quite heavily on his performance in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

I live in the optimistic world were we just had a worst-case scenario type year followed up with a worst-case scenario recruiting class.  8-5 with the 14th ranked recruiting class.  The players know that's not good enough.  The coaches know that's not good enough.  The fans know that's not good enough.

I'll take that as a worst-case scenario.  The JR and SR classes we just finished with were ranked 50th and 31st, respectively.  Enough to derail a season.  Our 14th ranked class isn't good enough for where we want to be, but with our last two classes, it's not prohibitive to have a championship-calibur team next year or in two years.

So McCaffrey is already a bust?  I guess that is true because he didn't play as a 190 lb true freshman.  It's not like 18 year old college football players ever put on weight after their freshman year.

Peters had a bad game so his career is over.

Milton is a bust because Rivals moved him down the ratings.  We shouldn't even bother allowing him on campus.

I can only imagine what all the clowns on this board would have been done with Tom Brady in 1998 and early 1999.  You would have literally run him out of town with torches and pitchforks.

Good thing message boards didn't exist in 1977, Joe Montana was a f&cking 7th string QB at Notre Dame before becoming JOE MONTANA.

You speak of "what if's" and "potential". I speak of what has objectively been put on the field the last 3 years. It's not that Peter's had one bad game, it's that he never had a great or even good game. We all were over joyed by some of his play because he didn't hurt us, not because he played like a competent quarterback.

With fewer useful data points (Rivals increasingly being camp-to-rank to support their camp biz; Scout/247 merging/consolidating) it seems the composite evaluations will be less accurate.

I'm sure they'll still be pretty accurate on success rate at the top of the rankings but that's the really easy part.

Based on his ranking, Peters shouldn't be a project QB.  But so far it looks like he is.

He sure talked a lot in the leadup to the bowl game how its his job and he is the QB.

It was all empty talk.

And Milton is probably more of a project than Peters.

Let's be real.  If Peters was actually where the staff expected he should be, I doubt we pursue Shea Patterson.

Peters constantly having to be pushed and movitated this much is ridiculous.  He quit competing and got outplayed in practice by O'Korn.

The reality is Peters is a bust and is the QB that belongs in the MAC conference (not Speight).

The first QB Harbaugh recruited just finished his redshirt freshman year. He lost out in the competition to start to a 5th year Senior and a 4th year junior. He played just part of the year and was injured.

P.S. Malzone is going to Miami, Speight hasn't decided where he's going yet.

Well, I don't think the premise is entirely accurate. Harbaugh has "landed" several quarterbacks (McCaffrey, Peters, and others), and they have not played out their eligibility or transferred yet.

I think there are a ton of factors involved, but the biggest factor is the offensive line development, in my opinion. There are guys on this roster who I think can (or could have) been quality players at the position, but they don't have the time or the confidence to make the throws they need to make.

Personally, I believe Brandon Peters has the smarts and arm talent to still be a very good QB at Michigan. But if the offensive line can't pass block, then it won't matter.

Somehow the shift in the Rivals final rankings has simultaneously caused Ohio State to lose a 5th star on a recruit, but bump their overall average and class to the #1 spot.

It is almost like Urban is recruiting a “depth class” as well after losing a couple of their top-rated 5* talent, but the middle of their class is strong.
