Ole Miss has 10 business days to respond after NCAA notification of the application. It is up to the NCAA to serve the same. The notice may/will contain additional information and procedures. It would not be prudent to file a premature waiver especially since Ole Miss has the right to say nothing.

Yeah, maybe he can go hang out with John "I'm not beating Greg Ward" O'Korn and Jake "Of court Kirk Ferentz loves a country music star's kid" Rudock and start a band.

I can only assume that Speight was told in no uncertain terms that he won't likely get a shot to start next year, so Speight looked elsewhere for a space he could play.  And of course, Michigan didn't completely close the door because they don't know about Patterson.  But whatever, let's shit on the guy who suffered a broken neck and who is annoyed with having to beat out a collection of the same guys for another year for the spot he's consistently shown he's best at compared to them the past 2 years.

What do you base that assumption on? Harbaugh is all about competition. If he tells a player that isn't the case, word would get around that he is a fraud. It seems more likely that Speight concluded he wouldn't win a head to head competition against a Brandon Peters who has game experience and decided to go elsewhere.

The sad reality is that Speight regressed last year and Brandon Peters and McCaffrey gained valuable experience. It's foolish to assume that Speight would prevail in a competition next year.

But I do know that all three of Michigan's quarterbacks last season gave everything they had in an attempt to bring the team success. I know that Speight was gravely injured before his team had a chance to gel around him. I know that Peters stepped in as a red shirt freshman and gave his all until he too was taken out. I know that John O'Korn stepped into the breach when Speight went down had success then stumbled lost his starting job and stepped back in when Peters went down and gave everything he had in failed attempts to bring his team success.

I also know this. None of these men deserve anything less than respect from the contributors to this blog. Nothing less. Nothing. The team had a bad season and certainly some of that falls on the QBs. But God love them they gave everything they had in quest for success and they didn't shirk blame in most cases they assumed more blame than was rightfully theirs. Just as is expected from Michigan men.

Last season is gone. Quit whining and look forward. You whiny bitches aren't fit to carry the helmets of the guys on that team. It's sad what this fan base has become. Just tragically sad.

the best at the position the last two years. Might want to check his stats in the last 7 games he played. If that is good QB play this team is going no where fast. Wilton has been unable to find a landing spot because he's not that good of a QB and no one is interested in bringing the guy in and using a scholie on him.

If Speight was a good starting QB there would be teams all over him, but that is just not the case. I do think Harbaugh has probably told him his chances of starting are very slim and he's looking to start a new chapter and play the young QB's allowing them to grow into the job. Would be willing to bet he told Speight he is welcome for a 5th year, but expect to be 3rd string and more in a mentor position.

Love Speight as a person and a good Michigan who gave it his all. But he hit his ceiling a long time ago and is an average at best QB at the P5 level. If he really wants to play next year, he probably needs to look at a MAC school or maybe D-1AA.

In a vacuum. He had a bad line and new receivers. Also, according to Webb Harbaugh himself said he didn’t give him he right looks in practice.

If Speight plays I believe we win 9, probably either at State or OSU.

Let’s please not become the fan base that always dumps on QB’s

If Michigan wanted Patterson to get a waiver before March 23rd maybe they should have submitted the paperwork before February 26th.

I'm biased. I want what's best for Michigan football. But setting aside that bias, it's hard to feel sorry for a school that delayed the submission of necessary paperwork for so long. Patterson was enrolled in January. What were they waiting for after that? It's also hard to feel sorry for the players. Of course Freeze was lying. Hopefully, you've learned a "valuable life lesson." Maybe it'll sink in if you sit for a year.

So is there anything preventing him from playing with the team in spring ball or even practice next fall if he has to wait a year?      If we knew he was elligible for next year it would definitely change the prep for the spring game versus if he were inelligible.

I get that Michigan wanted to make a thorough case, but submitting with some lead time  and following up on the process and it's rules seems like the better way to go.  If this clusters Spring ball, someone is getting fired.

I liked it two and three years ago when the rules feared Harbuagh.   We're going to be back in 2018, but I'm tired of hearing of preventable problems.  Michigan is the one who knocks.

I am pretty sure he can participate in all football activities...except dressing for a game. He could practice in spring. It is my understanding that the QBs get equal snaps in the spring, but the #1 probably gets the majority of those with the 1s and 2s vs the depth and scout team guys.

From the NCAA website:

Transfer Process

Academic year in residence: Under the basic transfer regulations, you must spend an academic year in residence at the school to which you are transferring. If you transfer from a four-year college to an NCAA school, you must complete one academic year in residence at the new school before you can play for or receive travel expenses from the new school, unless you qualify for a transfer exception or waiver. To satisfy an academic year in residence, you must be enrolled in and successfully complete a full-time program of studies for two-full semesters or three-full quarters. Summer school terms and part-time enrollment do not count toward fulfilling an academic year in residence.

We probably do have to wait until the administrative process plays out, but should there be a negative ruling, it would be nice to sue the NCAA and possibly Mississippi State for every possible damage, real or imagined, that one can think of.  MFers that play with these kids lives in this manner is ridiculous.

Did Michigan make a mistake by sending a copy of the appeal to MS as a courtesy and not formally?

Michigan could not have sent it "formally", they have to receive it from the NCAA.

It would be interesting if Shea were to be ruled ineligible and we filed a suit against the NCAA while allowing Shea to play anyways. It would probably be disastrous for us, but it just might be the first crack in the NCAA's power. Ultimately I think ruling against Shea (and the others) is a quick way for the NCAA to start a massive rebellion against itself, and I think they know this and will allow these kids to play.

It's Ole Miss, not MSU, BTW.

The NCAA does not like suits because the discovery process has the potential to crack the NCAA's thin veneer of bullshit.   When the summer camp ban was discussed, all it took was a discussion about the threat of suits relating to the anti-competitive nature of the ban to come up with a reasonable compromise that allowed the camps to continue with fewer dates.

My bad on the Ole Miss...sorry.

It would not be wise for Ole Miss to weigh in on a case that turns on OM's deception regarding their impending NCAA sanctions stemming from their violations while OM is appealing those sanctions. If they support eligibility they're implicitly acknowledging that there was some deception on their part. If they denounce eligibility they look really bad to recruits and others outside of the program.

The best thing OM could do for Michigan that would still be okay for themselves would be to respond as soon as they get the opportunity from the NCAA saying "we have no comment or position on this". However, I wouldn't even do that, if I were them. I would simply say nothing at all and not respond, as if you had not even been involved in this process.

DrMantisToboggan

They have 10 days to respond after they get the packet from the NCAA. When that 10 days expires, the NCAA moves on with the process.

So that's what I expect OM to do: allow the 10-day period to lapse without commenting and let the NCAA move forward. It really doesn't change anything, the NCAA will start their process as soon as OM does or doesn't respond. Only the NCAA could drag this out, not OM.

As correctly noted by others, Ole Miss' response to this is not exactly a no-brainer.  In part, they are forced to defend their institutional integrity to whatever extent it is attacked by Patterson and the other transferees.  It is not as simple as a routine letter allowing a transfer.

But umbig11 you yesterday very graciously answered my question about whether Shea Patterson is in any way disallowed from participating in the countable Spring practices and the Spring Game, which all begins to roll out on March 23 (Spring Game on April 14)...?

And the answer from the authoritative umbig11 is that Patterson's only bar is participation in intercollegiate games.  So we got until September 1.  Which is nice.
