@SamWebb77: . @Marcus_Ray29 is on "advisory board" for #Michigan search. Was on lengthy call about it Tuesday. Doesn't believe Cutcliffe offer happened

I disagree.  One of the silliest things about coaching searches is that people act like it's a huge embarrassment if a couple of candidates say "no, thanks."  Who cares?  I'd much rather have an exhaustive search that sees a couple of people say no and then a very good candidate say yes to one that avoids the no's but produces a worse coach.

In fact, as one who was nervous about Hackett running this search, I love the way he's casting a wide net.  I've been arguing that we should reach out to guys like Stoops, Malzahn, and Patterson just in case they're interested, and I wasn't expecting the AD to actually do that.  I think it's the right strategy.  You only need one of those guys to be interested -- and with the resources and roster that Michigan offers, it's totally possible that one excellent coach will surprise us and say yes.

EDIT:  FYI, I didn't neg you.  Not a fan of people downvoting reasonably stated opinions they disagree with.

puts Michigan in a position to make its football coach an elite position.

Michigan has the ability.  Now does it have the will?

Yes, the old conservative approach of deemphasizing coaching pay and attempting to get by on Michigan's laurels and 2-star diamond-in-the-rough old-boy-network coaching candidates would likely lead to a continuing decline (unless we identify the next Scooby Wright of the coaching ranks).  Hopefully, Hackett recognizes that belief among Michigan supporters is waning and that ~$60 million advantage is at risk.

Michigan simply needs to take the least risky way out of its predicament and pay up for a 5* elite coach.  While it still can.

But in this new social media age and the coverage that these coaching searches receive, the perception that Michigan is not elite is a growing one.
This is only an issue if coaches themselves follow the media coverage and allow it to influence them. I doubt most of them are doing so.

That's it. Media is assuming that every person the search firm contacts about interest is being offered and that's not the case. Only one offer out there right now and the search firm is just figuring out who might be available if Harbaugh says no. All Cutcliffe did was say he wasn't interested. Can you blame him. He's older and having to come to a new place with far higher expectations than Duke makes no sense.

Cutcliffe is 60 years old and he'll be 61 by the time the season is underway next year.  He's at a job where he's just come off 10 and 9 win seasons and he's a hero.  Duke is never going to have expectations higher than what he's achieved right now.  He has zero reason to jump ship at this stage of his career.

but honestly they know as much or less than anyone else at ESPN on the coaching search, they're separated from the situation and all those chuckleheads care about are listeners.  Since others like to pile on, they're going to do the same to keep listeners dialed in.  Everyone loves a sob story.  They're better at NFL stuff anyway, and I'm just about full of NBA crap.  Couldn't care less about professional basketball...

Golic: You know what always hits the spot? A nice PB&J sandwich, but only if you put the peanut butter on first.

Greenberg: Whoa, wait a minute there Big Guy! Are you saying you put the peanut butter on BEFORE the jelly?

Golic: Absolutely.

Greenberg: Okay, let me visualize this. So you take two pieces of bread, and you take a knife and first spread the peanut butter on and then you dip into the jelly.

Golic: Yes.

Greenberg: So what kind of bread are we talking about?

Golic: Actually it would depend on my mood, but usually Italian white bread.

Greenberg: Okay, let me get this straight. So you take, what I am assuming to be two pieces of Italian white bread, you have your knife … now do you use one knife or two?

Golic: One knife, have to use one knife.

Greenberg: Okay, so you take your ONE knife and you dip it into the jar of peanut butter, then you spread it onto the white bread and THEN you dip it into the jelly? Do you clean the knife off?

Golic: No. I mean you clean it off after you make the sandwich, but not in the middle of it, no way.

Greenberg: But doesn’t the peanut butter get into the jelly? Don’t answer that, we have to take a break, but this is fascinating stuff. What do you guys think about this, we will take your calls after the break.

Except not enough outrage by Greenie over the use of the same knife for both the peanut butter and the jelly.  That would be a 15 minute lecture about how you need to clean the knife or use 2 knives because what if someone later wants to have jelly with butter on a roll  . . .

It didn't happen. He wasn't offered. However, he was one of the 16 candidates being vetted for interest.

All this tells me is that the list is down to 15 now and we narrows Michigans focus.

Predictably Greenie is saying it is a sign of how far the program has fallen.

Reasons for wanting Harbaugh to come:

1. Obviously

2. HARBAUGH

3. HARBAUGH

4. HARBAUGH

5. Getting to see all the national reporters look like idiots for the way they've covered the coaching search

It's nice to have Webb confirm what so many of us suspected.  So far I'm confident that the process will work the way Hackett said it would - the search firm identifying and vetting candidates, presenting him options, and Hackett making an informed choice with input from concerned parties.

The Cutcliffe thing seems like what any good agent would do if they got an initial call and realized their guy either wasn't moving or had no real shot at the job.  Give a leak to a "useful idiot" (no disrespect to Brandt here), and have them publicize an overstatement of reality to create a market.

but why even offer someone that if they have no shot at the job. in this situation, Michigan has to protect against a perception that the job is no longer an elite job. if you can't even get a guy to interview it fuels that perception

That would be a pretty negative approach to the hiring process - "we don't want to look silly so let's not reach out to candidates." Instead I would hope they approach it from a positive perspective looking to land the best candidate and trying to vet all the options. If we end with a good hire it doesn't matter how many people turned us down

I hope to hell not. In addition to the black eye of yet another coaching search in which Michigan gets turned down by someone coaching at what is perceived as a "lower-tier" program, there's no way Harbaugh (or, hell, Miles/Mullen/Stoops, for that matter) is on the table if they're out offering David Cutcliffe.

Sounds like exactly what everyone here thought as well.

On another note, it is nice to hear that everyone is happy with the direction Hackett is going and the way he is conducting this search. Sounds like he is engaging all of the stackholders.

While I'm 99% sure the "offer" was complete bullshit the proof will be in the who-do-we-end-up-with sweepstakes.

Get an A candidate like Harbaugh, Miles, Mullen, Mora (and yes kids - there ARE A candidates besides Jimbo) and I'll write it off as NFL-biased nonsense.

Get a B candidate like Nebraska did (and there are too many of those out there to list) and I'll believe there may be more too this than we'd like to admidt.
